"Messiah?"

Hearing someone calling him, Howard immediately jumped up from the ground and looked towards the source of the voice.

Then he saw a pair of bright eyes appear behind the ruins, and then the owner of the eyes walked out of the darkness. It was a thin girl.

"Messiah!" After approaching, the girl finally confirmed Howard's identity. She threw herself into Howard's arms and sobbed. He cried and said, "Messiah... Messiah, you are finally back, Chief... The Chief told us not to give up. He said you would definitely come back... You are finally back..."

"Don't cry, don't cry." Seeing that there were still people alive, Howard immediately cheered up. He squatted down to comfort the little girl and asked, "What happened here after I left?"

But the girl shook her head like a rattle: "I don't know, I can't remember anything... I only remember that the pastor sent us out. He said you would definitely come back, but he was afraid that you wouldn't be able to see us when you came back, so he asked us to come out and wait for you..."

The pastor the girl was talking about was probably Francis. Her answer meant that Francis was probably still alive, so Howard finally felt relieved.

"Where's Francis?" Howard continued to ask, "Francis, and Char and the others, where are the others?"

The girl was about to speak when the Ohm Messiah in Howard's pocket suddenly vibrated. Howard understood that this was a warning of danger, so he picked up the girl and hid behind the ruins.

"Shh-"

Howard made a gesture to the girl to keep quiet, and the girl obediently covered her mouth and nodded.

After hiding behind the ruins for about two minutes, a sound of engines came from afar. Howard bravely took a peek and saw a line of Astra Militarum transport vehicles driving in front of the big pit. The transport vehicles stopped around the big pit, and then the doors opened. Many people in civilian clothes with their hands tied behind their backs got off the transport vehicles at gunpoint by soldiers, and formed a circle in front of the big pit, their faces facing the inside of the pit.

Then the captain of the Astra Militarum squad walked in front of the soldiers holding their guns and shouted:

"I sentence you, the tainted, to death according to the laws of the Empire."

After hearing his own death sentence, a man waiting to be executed collapsed. He turned his head and pleaded with tears and snot: "No! No! No! I clearly did nothing. I am innocent! I am..."

But the captain ignored his pleas and melted a hole in his brain with a laser gun.

The man's body stiffened immediately, and then he fell straight to his knees on the ground. The captain raised his foot and kicked his body into the pit.

Then the captain made a gesture, and the other soldiers raised their guns and aimed.

At the moment when the resident of the middle nest was shot, Howard felt the girl in his arms couldn't help but tremble and let out a slight whimper.

Howard didn't intend to stand by and watch. He hid the girl, then walked out of his hiding place alone and shouted, "Stop!"

"Who?!"

After Howard shouted this, the soldiers who were originally planning to execute him turned their guns and pointed them at Howard. Some of them had even pulled the trigger, but the guns in their hands did not move.

Howard raised his hands, interlaced his index fingers, and then jerked them apart, his mouth dubbing the action as he did so.

"bong!"

"boom!"

After Howard uttered the onomatopeia of explosion, the energy storage batteries of the laser guns in the hands of the Star Army exploded at the same time.

But these were, after all, well-equipped Astra Militarum troops, and the detonation of the laser gun battery only injured them, not completely crippling them. Seeing their laser guns fail, they simultaneously drew their melee weapons and attempted to engage Howard in hand-to-hand combat. However, as soon as they took a step, the small cannons mounted on the troop carriers automatically activated and opened fire in their path, leaving a neat row of bullet holes in the ground.

Howard originally thought that such a display of power would be enough to scare the Astra Militarum, and then he could negotiate with them to release the civilians.

Unexpectedly, the warning machine gun fire only stunned this group of fully armed men for less than a second, and then their morale rose instead of falling. They shouted "For the Emperor" and rushed forward fearlessly with their weapons raised.

Holy shit! What should I do?

In the two seconds that Howard hesitated, the Star Army soldier in the front had already crossed a distance of more than 30 meters and stabbed Howard with a raised military dagger.

"boom!"

Before the dagger could penetrate Howard's body, Om Messiah used the transport's small cannon to blast the Astra Militarum's head off.

But the Astra Militarum soldiers behind them stepped on the corpses of those in front of them and rushed forward without hesitation, shouting "For the Empire", and were shot in the head by Om Messiah again.

……

Half a minute later, as the last headless Astra Militarum soldier fell in front of Howard, this small Astra Militarum team of more than a dozen people were all killed.

Howard's heart was pounding, his pupils were trembling, and his face was covered with tiny spots of blood.

Before crossing over, he had heard of the loyalty and bravery of the Astra Militarum, but he had not expected them to be so loyal.

Somehow, he suddenly felt a little sad. From the perspective of the Astra Militarum, their cleansing of those potentially contaminated by Chaos was entirely justified, yet Howard couldn't bring himself to stand by and watch them perish. He'd initially thought this was something he could negotiate, but in the eyes of the Astra Militarum, this was a non-negotiable matter; it was a life-or-death struggle.

Then they can only die.

This may be a microcosm of the situation in the empire. The empire is so big that the boundaries between right and wrong are blurred. It is difficult to say who is right and who is wrong in many things, but many things must be clearly distinguished. Therefore, if right and wrong cannot be distinguished, the only thing left is life and death.

The residents of the Middle Nest who were rescued by Howard stared blankly at the little man who had just displayed incredible strength in front of them. Suddenly, someone recognized him and cheered, "Messiah! It's the Messiah! The Messiah is back!"

Led by him, the rest of the rescued people also cheered:

"Messiah!"

"The Messiah is back!"

"We are saved!"

……

Amidst the praise and cheers that Howard did not like, he bent down and picked up the dagger from the hand of the Astra Militarum captain who died in front of him, and then cut the rope on the hands of a Mid-Nest resident whose hands were tied behind his back.

Then Howard handed the dagger to the man and signaled him to cut the ropes of the others.

He just found a place to sit down and put his hands on his head.

It wasn't just the Empire and the Astra Militarum that couldn't tell the difference between right and wrong; he couldn't tell the difference either.
