Traveling through time, I'm making pancakes in Warhammer
Chapter 1 Pancake Fruit
Early in the morning, just as the sky was getting light, the hardworking Master Howard began his day's work.
The mill boy had brought him the ingredients he needed for the day early: high-quality wheat flour, corn flour, and mung bean flour. They were produced in the fertile farmland along the Woliang River, and each grain was carefully selected to present the best quality.
Along with the mill boy came the lord's messenger, who conveyed the lord's orders to Howard.
"Cornmeal, no parsley, sausage and eggs, and a sweet sauce."
Although he had anticipated the lord's request, Howard did not act on his own initiative. Instead, he waited for the messenger to read out the request and then took out a pen and paper to write it down carefully. This was the rule.
After recording the lord's orders, Howard began to mix the special batter. He took out an exquisite brass scale from under the workbench. He placed weights on one side of the scale and flour on the other side until the two sides were completely level. Then he used the same method to determine the amount of cornmeal, salt and sugar.
After weighing, Howard arranged the materials in front of him one by one, and then meticulously placed them in the silver kettle in order. Then, he poured in mountain spring water of a volume determined by glassware and began to stir.
One hundred and twenty clockwise, thirty counterclockwise, not too fast, not too slow. Batter was the foundation of food, the most important thing; everything else was just a side dish, so Howard had to treat it with care and piety.
The prepared batter needs to be left for two and a half minutes. While waiting, Howard sincerely oiled the griddle, turned on the fire and heated it. When the temperature reached the requirement, the batter was left for enough time.
Then he took out the wooden pushers that had been soaked overnight from the bucket. He first held the pushers with both hands and placed them on his chest, like a believer holding a cross to pray to God. Then he poured the batter in the middle of the griddle and spread it into a perfect circle in two strokes.
The next step can no longer be so leisurely. This food must be completed within one minute, otherwise the batter will be too dry and burnt. So Howard's speed suddenly increased, beating the eggs, spreading them evenly, turning them over, brushing them with sauce, sprinkling them with chopped green onions, adding sliced bacon, homemade starch sausage and lettuce, and finally wrapping them with bread.
A pancake is made in this way.
Seeing the pancake coming out of the pan, the messenger bowed slightly to Howard and stretched out his hand holding a silver tray. Howard scooped up the pancake with a spatula and placed it in the center of the white lace tablecloth on the silver tray.
"Today's crispy burrito, I wish the Lord good health." Howard said.
The messenger nodded slightly in greeting, then turned and left. After all this commotion, the sky was already completely bright.
What happened next had nothing to do with Howard. The lord's messenger would carry the plate with the pancake and stride through the town, making sure it appeared on the table on time for the lord's breakfast.
Sometimes when it rains heavily, the lord will send out a whole guard of honor to welcome the pancake. The guards dressed in British style hold up rainproof curtains on all sides, and the waiters in the middle carry the trays through the town as usual.
Howard couldn't understand the nobleman's strange sense of ritual. He didn't know whether this would make the pancakes taste better, but it would make them more expensive.
However, the lord never paid for his pancakes, but would often reward him with things, such as the brass scale and silver kettle used for weighing just now. They were said to be imported goods, and one piece could buy a manor here.
Howard had been providing pancakes for the lord's breakfast for three years without a single problem.
Five years ago, he traveled to this world called Orin. According to his observation, the civilization of this world should be around the Middle Ages. During this period, the agricultural output was actually enough to prevent most people from starving. However, people's minds were not open yet. Fortunately, there was no witch hunt or other messy things.
Then he ate a diet of various bean porridges and French armor-piercing bullets for two years.
Until one day, he found that the existing materials were just enough to make a pancake. When he finally made the pancake, a hunter friend of his named Fugen came to visit him and brought him a rabbit he had just shot.
So Howard shared his crappy hometown snacks with his hunter friend, but he didn't expect that the other party would praise them highly after eating them and suggested that Howard open a restaurant based on them.
Howard vaguely remembered that his two best dishes before he traveled through time were boiled frozen dumplings and boiled noodles, so he declined the suggestion.
He thought the incident was just a minor incident, but the next day, his friend came again and brought the town treasurer with him.
The hunter friend told Howard that he had been thinking about the pancake ever since he ate it and hoped to eat it every day, so he brought the financial officer with him. If the pancake made by Howard could be approved by the financial officer, he could get a loan to open a restaurant.
In this way, Howard's pancake shop opened.
At first, he thought that "Jianbing Guozi" was too out of place in this Western medieval world, so he tried to change the name to Crispy Roll, but something strange happened.
Once he named what he made "crispy rolls", it would lose its charm, so he could only continue to name his own "Jianbing Guozi" which did not look like Jianbing Guozi at all.
He didn't know what magic his Jianbing had. Making Jianbing was not difficult. When Jianbing became popular in the town, many imitators appeared, including some famous chefs. But no matter what, in the blind test, people all agreed that Howard's Jianbing could make people happier.
Some scholars even invited Howard to provide personal guidance in a truth-seeking and pragmatic spirit, and restored the ingredients and techniques one-to-one, but they could still be distinguished in a blind test.
So people divided the people who made Jianbingguozi into two types: one was Howard, who made "food that brings happiness"; the other was other people who made mediocre crispy rolls.
Later, a hunter friend quietly asked Howard for the secret recipe for making Jianbing Guozi. Howard thought for a long time and thought of an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, so he answered seriously: "Devotion and love for food."
The hunter friend left in shock.
So Howard later registered as a member of the church and was responsible for distributing pancakes as communion after each service. People said that Howard had a pair of hands kissed by God.
……
"Howard! Give me two pancakes. Put more shredded potatoes on one and more pickles on the other." Someone called Howard out from his memories. It was the auntie who raised chickens next door.
"Okay!" Howard agreed and made the pancakes that the aunt needed in a few seconds.
The lord eats pancakes with style, so the steps are naturally as complicated as possible, but when making daily breakfast for the neighbors, speed and affordability are the top priorities.
The chicken farmer took the two pancakes but didn't pay for them. Instead, she gave Howard a basket of eggs as a barter.
Howard accepted the eggs and said, "These are too many eggs. How about this, if you come to eat at my place again this week, I won't charge you."
Before the aunt could reply, someone else called out from behind, "Howard, give me a pancake with more parsley and more hot sauce."
"Okay!" Howard continued to work.
……
Howard worked like this until noon, and only closed his stall when all the flour delivered that day was finished. He thanked the overly enthusiastic customers, closed the door, and began to count today's harvest.
Today's account brought in a basket of eggs, two hares, two baked apples, a dried fish, a small bag of barley... and a small bag of change.
Even after deducting the tithe, this amount of money is equivalent to a farmer's monthly income.
Howard likes this place. Although the hardware conditions here are indeed not as good as his original world, it is relaxed and leisurely, and he has always been pursuing a peaceful life.
After putting the money away safely, Howard whistled and began to clean up the kitchen utensils.
But when he was brushing the wooden barrel containing the batter, he heard cheers outside.
"Look, it's an angel!"
Then more and more people started cheering.
"Angel! It's an angel!"
"The angel is coming!"
So Howard carried the barrel out of the room and looked in the direction people were looking in confusion.
Then he saw a red Thunderhawk dropship flying overhead.
The barrel fell from Howard's hand, and the white paste flowed all over the floor.
But Howard didn't care about these things. At this moment, he had only one thought in his mind:
Why didn't I just die when I came here?
Damn it, I traveled to Warhammer.
