Chapter 1074 Is it an angel?
The next day, nothing happened as usual.
As night fell, the atmosphere at the campsite changed noticeably.
The soldiers were checking their weapons and distributing limited ammunition, their unease evident in their hushed conversations.
The lights in the scarred commander's tent remained on, and the radio signal was frequent.
Ivan found Su Chaoji, patted him on the shoulder, and said in a rare gentle tone, "Kid, we need to move forward. This place... might not be safe tomorrow. Be careful."
He seemed to want to say something, but in the end he just sighed and walked away with his cane.
Su Chaoji watched his retreating figure with a calm and unwavering gaze.
Goodbye, Ivan.
The brief moments of warmth during war cannot change each other's positions or the impending carnage.
At midnight, all was quiet.
Su Chaoji quietly left his corner.
He first located the fuel storage area.
While everyone was busy, he took advantage of the shadows and quietly moved behind the oil drums. Using tools he had prepared beforehand, he pierced tiny holes in inconspicuous places on the bottom of several oil drums.
Thick diesel oil slowly seeped out, spreading dark marks on the dry earth, its smell diluted by the night wind.
He calculated the rate of leakage; within two hours, a sizable oil slick would form, but it wouldn't immediately cause a fire.
Next, he went to the backup generator.
This is an old diesel generator that is very noisy and is usually only used when the main generator fails.
Su Chaoji skillfully loosened several key screws, leaving certain components in a state of near-looseness.
At the same time, he stuffed a small piece of rag soaked in engine oil deep into the gap of the generator's air intake.
After doing all this, he quietly lay low in the shadows.
About an hour later, an explosion was heard from the northwest.
Just as Su Chaoji predicted, fighting had already begun outside.
Sofia was huddled in her shack when the explosion was heard.
She remembered what the older boy had said: after hearing the explosion, she had to get out of there.
Her heart was pounding, but she didn't hesitate to crawl out and quietly move behind the oil drum the boy had mentioned, waiting patiently.
She didn't see the young man, but she wasn't flustered at all.
He said he would come, and he definitely will.
There was a small open space behind the oil drum, just enough for her to hide.
Sofia sat down, hugging her knees. Explosions and gunshots echoed outside, each sound making her heart skip a beat.
About ten minutes later, an even larger explosion shook the ground.
Sofia covered her ears, followed by chaotic shouts and running sounds.
Amidst the noise, a familiar figure nimbly flashed into her line of sight.
His hair was covered in dust, and he had scratches on his face, but his deep black eyes remained bright.
It was Su Chaoji.
Sofia's eyes lit up, and she almost shouted it out, but then she remembered her older brother's advice to stay calm.
She pursed her lips, trying to maintain a calm expression, but the joy in her eyes was impossible to hide.
Su Chaoji quickly scanned his surroundings, then squatted down in front of her: "Are you hurt?"
Sofia shook her head, her voice soft: "No, can we go now?"
Su Chaoji listened intently to the sounds outside. "Once their attention is focused on the west side, we'll head out from the east."
Another explosion was heard, this time very close.
Su Chaoji instinctively protected Sophia, and only let go after the tremors subsided.
"Are you scared?" he asked.
Sophia hesitated for a moment, then nodded honestly: "A little, but with my brother here, I'm not so scared."
Su Chaoji's expression softened: "From now on, you must stay close to me. No matter what you see or hear, you cannot stop. Can you do that?"
"Yes." Sophia nodded emphatically.
Su Chaoji suddenly took out a black communicator from his waist, pressed a few buttons, and said briefly, "Prepare for backup."
After giving the instructions, he taught Sophia to wrap the soles of her shoes with strips of cloth, and Sophia learned very diligently.
"Are you ready?" Su Chaoji asked one last time.
Sofia nodded and placed her hand into his outstretched palm.
His hands were steady, with a youthful, bony strength that was surprisingly powerful.
Under the cover of another explosion, the two quickly left the oil drum.
Long before, Su Chaoji had already figured out the layout of the entire camp.
He knew which road was patrolled the least, when the sentries changed shifts, and which section of barbed wire was the loosest.
Most of the camp's forces are currently engaged in battle to the northwest, making it the perfect time to leave, but it's not enough.
To make this escape seamless, he needed to add fuel to the fire.
"Close your eyes," Su Chaoji said, taking a small lighter out of his pocket.
Sofia obediently closed her eyes.
Su Chaoji pulled out half of a pre-prepared strip of cloth, struck a spark with a lighter, and the cloth instantly ignited.
He threw the strip of cloth onto the clearing he had deliberately made on the side of the oil drum, where there were piles of discarded cardboard boxes and sawdust.
The flames suddenly shot up.
"Run!" Su Chaoji grabbed Sophia's hand again, and the two rushed towards the planned route.
They had only run a dozen meters when they heard soldiers shouting in terror behind them: "It's terrible! The fuel is on fire!"
The camp was in turmoil.
The alarm sounded.
Immediately afterwards, a muffled thud came from the other side of the camp.
A plume of black smoke billowed from the direction of the backup generator, followed by a piercing noise and sparks from the friction of metal.
The generator began to vibrate violently, emitting a roar of exhaustion, before abruptly shutting off and emitting even thicker black smoke.
The noise behind them grew louder.
Someone shouted, "Oh no, the generator has exploded too!"
"Enemy attack? Is it an enemy attack?"
Several events occurred almost simultaneously, instantly igniting chaos in the camp at a time when people were most bewildered.
The soldiers disregarded their own safety, with some rushing towards the fire, others keeping watch, and the rest running around in confusion.
Prior to this, Su Chaoji had already completed the most crucial step.
He found some lime, mixed it with old clothes and the two men's personal belongings, and faked "corpses" at the camp.
This creates the illusion that they perished in the fire.
In this way, he and Sofia could perfectly escape unscathed.
"This way." Su Chaoji pulled Sophia into a path that was almost completely overgrown with weeds.
Sofia ran breathlessly, but didn't fall behind.
She followed the young man trustingly, occasionally glancing back.
The camp had descended into even greater chaos, with firelight illuminating half the sky and various shouts mingling together.
As they passed through the last gap in the barbed wire fence, Sofia whispered, "Little brother, are we safe now?"
"We're safe for now." Su Chaoji checked the surroundings to make sure there were no pursuers, then said, "But we still have to walk a bit to the rendezvous point."
Sofia looked up at him. In the darkness, the young man's profile was still covered in soot, but his deep black eyes looked exceptionally clear in the darkness.
She suddenly remembered what her grandfather had said: some people appear in times of crisis like angels.
"Is the young man an angel?" she asked softly.
