Female-male sex: Salted fish forced to rise to prominence
Chapter 18: A fierce competition of poetry
The shopkeeper walked downstairs at great speed. He didn't care about the beads of sweat on his forehead and said to everyone, "Mr. Bei Mo said that this time, regardless of gender or social status, anyone who is willing can participate in the written test."
After saying this, he began to make an announcement to prevent the students from arguing further. He said, "This written exam will last for one cup of tea. Let's begin."
In a moment, on the table, the "rustling" sound made by the wolf hair brush tip touching the rice paper was endless.
Among them were those who wrote calmly like Qin Yuehua, and those who were leisurely and not in a hurry to start like Su Yu. But there were also those who subconsciously bit the tip of the pen and thought hard, and some who shook their heads and muttered to themselves.
As the only one of the three people to participate in the poetry competition, Lin Lantian was secretly delighted.
He was really lucky today, as the topic happened to be one he had written some time ago, and he had revised it several times. He felt that he would definitely win the first place this time.
After a while, he finished writing and looked at Su Yu who had not started writing yet. He thought, what a fool he is, what a disgrace. He couldn't help but feel complacent.
Song Xuanzhi and Han Qin, who were standing nearby and watching, also looked like they were enjoying the show.
It was only at this time that Su Yu slowly began to pick up the pen. If he wrote too fast, people would suspect that he was not writing the poem on the spot.
He wrote slowly on purpose. He couldn't show off his beautiful handwriting in the "Slender Gold" style. The situation was still unclear and he couldn't stand out too much. So he wrote very ordinary on purpose.
In fact, although his calligraphy skills are not as good as that of his best friend Maomao, with her rich and ink-rich brushstrokes and flowing lines, he has also made some progress.
Just as Su Yu put down the last stroke, the waiter shouted, "Time's up." Then, the waiter in charge of this matter collected all the calligraphy works on the table and took them to the second floor to wait for Mr. Bei Mo to review.
There weren't actually that many people taking part in the competition, only about ten. After all, in this era, scholars were precious, and pens, ink, paper, and inkstone were even more expensive.
Without any family background, no one would dare to send their sons to school, so there were very few who could read and write.
After a while, the waiter came downstairs.
He was seen standing at the stairs, looking at everyone with a smile on his face.
Everyone stared at him intently, waiting for him to announce the result of the game.
"The first place winner of this poetry competition has been decided!" the waiter said loudly.
As the voice fell, the whole hall fell silent. Everyone held their breath, waiting for the waiter to announce the name of the first place.
The waiter paused, then said loudly, "The first place winner of this poetry competition is... Su Yu!"
As soon as the words fell, the whole hall exploded.
"How is this possible?" a young scholar shouted in disbelief.
"How could a idiot like him get first place? Is there some inside story?" A burly man shouted in a hoarse voice, his voice was very sharp and piercing.
Lin Lantian was the most excited among the crowd. He pointed at Su Yu and said loudly: "How could he, a fat guy who only knows how to eat, drink and doze off in class, write poetry!"
After he finished speaking, a smug smile appeared on his face, as if he had already seen Su Yu's embarrassing look after being exposed in public.
Han Qin, who was standing by, narrowed his eyes, a wicked smile appeared on his lips, and he echoed, "Yeah, this guy is only good at playing with women."
As he spoke, he couldn't help laughing, and his laughter was full of teasing and sarcasm.
Obviously, they didn't believe that Su Yu could write a good poem and thought it was just a joke.
Song Xuanzhi, standing next to him, was acting pretentiously and cheerfully. He put on the demeanor of a gentleman, a false smile on his lips, and whispered, "Could there be some misunderstanding here? Did the waiter pronounce the last name as the first?"
His words were like a stone that caused a thousand ripples, instantly arousing the approval and response of the people around him.
The originally quiet scene was suddenly broken and became noisy.
At this moment, a scholar stepped forward and suggested: "Since everyone thinks their poems are good, why not read them out loud? Then we can appreciate and judge them together."
This suggestion immediately received the support of everyone, who agreed that it was an excellent idea. So, the waiter began to read the poems in the order in which the papers were placed.
The first was the strong man's, "Outside the wall, peach blossoms are in full bloom. I pick them with my bare hands and give them to my wife." When everyone heard this, they burst into laughter and praised him for his courage.
The older scholar said: "The high flowers are like jade, shining brightly in the cold winter. A few branches have broken through the snow, and spring has come. The east wind blows, and the peach and plum blossoms are competing for spring, but how late is it?" (Source: Name: Plum Blossom, Song Dynasty: Chen Yuyi)
The poem is a good one, but it is off topic. Although the word "peach" is in the poem, it is actually about plum blossoms.
Then there is the poem of a young scholar: "Fragrant morning, beautiful day at Peach Blossom Bay, pearl curtains urge the bills due at Phoenix Tower."
Interpretation: "After the first light of dawn, the warm sunlight spreads over Peach Blossom Pond, the scenery is pleasant and beautiful. The beautiful pearl curtains adorning the tall buildings remind people of the place where the phoenix lives." (Source: "Ode to the Painting Screen" by Shangguan Yi, Tang Dynasty)
Although it is a good poem, there is no follow-up, which is a pity and not many people comment on it.
Lin Lantian: "The spring breeze gently embraces the waist of the peach blossoms, just like a beautiful woman in a dream. I stretch out my sleeves to pick the peach blossoms, but my hands are too low and the branches are too high."
Interpretation: The spring breeze gently brushes against the peach blossoms, like a beautiful woman in a dream. When you reach out to touch the blossoms, you realize the branches are too high to reach. (Source: Huang Youcai, "Dream of Peach Blossoms," a modern poem)
A passerby said: "The poem is complete, but it lacks some intensity, making it feel mediocre."
Another old man said: "Peach blossoms bloom first in the warm spring, so bright and beautiful that who wouldn't want to see them? But alas, the strong wind blows them away, leaving only the bright red petals dotting the moss.
Interpretation: With the arrival of spring, peach blossoms are the first to bloom. Who wouldn't want to enjoy the beautiful scenery? Unfortunately, a strong wind blew the peach blossoms into blood-red flakes, dotting the moss. (Source: Peach Blossom, Author: Zhou Pu)
Everyone praised the poem, saying that it was smooth and well-chosen in terms of word choice, and it was indeed a good poem.
Qin Yuehua: "The cool moon hangs like an eyebrow over the willow bay, and the mountains of Yue are reflected in the mirror. For three days, there has been a peach blossom rain in Lanxi, and in the middle of the night, carp come to the beach.
The interpretation is: "A crescent moon hangs high above Liuwan, and the mountains of Yuezhong are reflected on the mirror-like surface of the lake. Three days of continuous spring rain have fallen, and in the dead of night, schools of fish flock to the stream's edge and run aground." (Source: "Lanxi Boat Song" by Dai Shulun of the Tang Dynasty)
Everyone just felt that the poem was beautiful, with a combination of movement and stillness, making people feel as if they were in a painting and immersed in it. It was a great poem.
An old man stroked his beard and praised, "What a talented girl."
A passerby said: "Yes, yes, except for Miss Chen Manli from Minister Chen's family, such talented girls are rarely seen around the capital."
The waiter read out the poems one by one until the end, when he finally read out Su Yu's poem.
Everyone held their breath in tacit agreement. Some were expecting something, some were watching the show, and some were worried about Su Yu. Everyone had different emotions.
The waiter recited loudly with emotion: "Last year on this day, the human face and the peach blossoms were reflected in each other at this door. I don't know where the human face has gone, but the peach blossoms still smile in the spring breeze."
Explanation: Last year at this very moment, I was at this very door, and I saw the girl's face against the peach blossoms. Today, when I come here again, I don't know where the girl has gone, but the radiant peach blossoms are still in full bloom in the spring breeze. The whole audience was shocked. What a great poem! What a great poem!!!!
