Chapter 58 Looking at each other

Early in the morning on the first day of the Lunar New Year, almost all of the Yang family members, who had just gone to bed, were up again. The reason was simple: the village chief, Grandpa Zhang, had come with some of his grandchildren to pay New Year's greetings.

In previous years, Old Man Yang and Old Man Yang would go to other families in the village to pay New Year's greetings, and their own family would be almost at home in the afternoon. This year, the village chief took the lead in doing this, so everyone in Old Yang's family got up.

The village chief, Grandpa Zhang, was a few years younger than Old Man Yang. Because they had settled in Changshan Village a generation earlier, their family was relatively well-off compared to the older Yang family. Grandpa Zhang had three sons and eight grandsons. His eldest grandson was the same age as Yang Mingyu and was attending school in the county, so he hadn't even started dating anyone yet. At Yang Mingmo's wedding banquet, seeing the man claiming to be Yang Mingxi's uncle-in-law, Grandpa Zhang and the other clan leaders all felt that the Yang family was about to rise.

Grandpa Zhang was tempted to marry Yang Mingxi to his eldest grandson, but his eldest daughter-in-law objected. She felt that Yang Mingxi was a village girl, and her son was going to be an official, so she should marry a woman from an official family, who would be worthy of her son. Because of this disagreement, the matter was put on hold.

When the eldest grandson came home for the Chinese New Year, he told him about this matter and also told him about Yang Mingxi leading the whole village to plant rice seedlings and harvest three crops of rice a year. As a result, the eldest grandson said that he would take a look first and then make a promise if it was feasible. He wanted to lead a good life with his family through his own efforts and did not need to rely on nepotism. So on the morning of the first day of the Chinese New Year, Grandpa Zhang brought several grandchildren to visit the old Yang family to pay New Year's greetings and to see each other.

Everyone exchanged a few pleasantries, mostly auspicious New Year greetings, before discussing Yang Minghu's wedding on the eighth day of the first lunar month. Naturally, they called Yang Mingxi over to the main room to pay New Year's greetings.

Grandpa Zhang brought his three grandsons, the eldest grandson Zhang Zixuan, the second grandson Zhang Zilin, and the third grandson Zhang Zifeng. When they saw the girls Yang Mingxi, Yang Mingqi and Yang Mingjie come in, their eyes widened.

Yang Mingxi was confused and didn't know what was going on. Yang Mingqi knew what it was, but she was still thinking about the fourth son of the Duan family, so she didn't care. Only Yang Mingjie blushed, clutched the hem of her clothes tightly with both hands, and was embarrassed to raise her head.

"Grandpa, we are here." Yang Mingxi was the first to speak to her grandfather.

"Come and wish your village chief, Grandpa Zhang, a happy new year, and his three grandchildren."

"Hello, Grandpa Zhang, hello to the young brothers of the Zhang family, and happy new year." Yang Mingxi said with a smile.

Yang Mingjie and Yang Mingqi followed up by saying, "Happy New Year." Then they and Yang Mingxi stepped back and sat on a stool nearby.

Zhang Zixuan glanced at his grandfather and knew that it was Yang Mingxi who was speaking, so he looked over.

Yang Mingxi was talking to her sister when she felt someone watching her, so she looked over. Their eyes met, and they each glanced at each other, smiled slightly, and then looked away.

Zhang Zixuan looked at his grandfather and shook his head gently. Everyone sat and chatted for a while, and then Grandpa Zhang took his grandson back home.

On the way, Grandpa Zhang couldn't wait to ask, "Ah Xuan, what's going on? Do you look down on the girl from the Yang family?"

Zhang Zixuan blushed and said, "Grandpa, it's not that I look down on the girl, it's that I'm not worthy of her."

Grandpa Zhang was surprised. His eldest grandson had always been a brilliant talent, not only in the village but also in the school. The teachers all said he would definitely enter the government. Furthermore, he had never seen his eldest grandson so unsure of himself. How could this happen?

Grandpa Zhang thought for a moment and said, "Ah Xuan, you're not bad either. Why would you say that?"

Zhang Zixuan said, "When I looked at her, she noticed me. Not only was she not shy, she stared at me for a moment, then smiled at me. I've only seen this kind of expression in the headmaster before. It's that kind of polite gaze followed by a response. It should be something that only someone very capable could do. And she did it so naturally, it felt like it was meant to be that way. At least I can't do it, which is why I say I'm not worthy of her."

Grandpa Zhang felt the same way after hearing all these words. He shook his head and thought it was a pity.

Zhang Zixuan suddenly smiled and said, "Grandpa, although I'm not worthy of her, it doesn't stop us from being friends with her! Look, she led the entire village to plant rice seedlings, which shows that she's very generous. And you're the village chief, so if we support her, it won't be bad for us in the future."

What Zhang Zixuan didn't know was that because of his decision, although his path to the imperial examination was not smooth, he did become an official and his future development was quite good.

The Yang family sent off the village chief, Grandpa Zhang, and then welcomed people from several large families in the village. Each family brought men of marriageable age, and the procedures they followed were similar to those of the Zhang family, but they were far less elegant and reserved than the Zhang family.

The first to arrive was the Niu family. After everyone exchanged greetings, the head of the Niu family said with a smile: "Brother, look at my youngest grandson. He is tall and strong. How about him being your grandson-in-law?" After that, he pointed to a tall and strong man in the crowd.

Old Man Yang didn't usually have much contact with the Niu family, but he knew they were a bit arrogant. He wanted to just laugh it off and ignore it, but then he heard the tall boy say, "Who is Yang Mingxi? Come out first so I can see you. Let me make it clear, I don't want anyone too skinny. I can't stand it."

Yang Mingxi frowned when she heard such irrelevant words, raised her eyes to glance, pouted and stood still.

Yang Minghu stood up and said, "Thank you for your kindness. Your family's threshold is too high. We can't afford it. Please go back!" After that, he and Yang Mingyang carried the man and walked him out of the Yang family's gate.

The other descendants of the Yang family in the room followed suit and asked the Niu family to leave. It took no more than a cup of tea.

Seeing Old Man Yang's obvious displeasure, Yang Mingxi coquettishly stood behind him and, while giving her grandfather a massage, said, "Grandpa, don't be sad. It's not worth getting angry at such a person. If a dog bites you, do you want to bite it back? That's too cheap, isn't it!"

A burst of laughter erupted from the main room of the Yang family, and Old Man Yang joined in. This principle was simple and clear, and it was indeed not worth getting angry about.

Amidst the boisterous laughter, Uncle Mei Wu came over with his grandchildren.

As soon as he entered the room, Master Mei Wu also laughed and said, "Brother Yang, if you have anything happy, please let me be happy too!"

Old Man Yang shook his head and said, "My granddaughter told a joke, a joke about a dog and a bitten person. It makes a lot of sense."

When Master Mei Wu heard this, combined with the Niu family he had just met at the door, he guessed what was going on. He shook his head at his grandson and said, "We were originally going to the village chief's house to pay New Year's greetings, but the village chief said we should pay our respects to our parents first. So we came over to sit with you and pay our respects to our future parents."

Old man Yang modestly declined, but he was really happy, and the wrinkles on his face were raised by smiling.

Yang Mingxi and the others had finished serving tea and were about to leave when they heard a gentle voice say, "Wait a minute, Miss Yang. I have some questions and would like to ask you something. Is that convenient?"

Yang Mingxi paused as she walked out, slowly turned around and looked at the person who was speaking. "Young Master Mei, you are so polite. I don't have any knowledge, and I haven't been to school. I've just traveled a lot and seen a lot, so I'm just talking about theory. I can't really say I'm asking for advice. However, I can share my opinions on your doubts, but you'll have to decide whether they're helpful or not."

After hearing this, the fourth boy of the Mei family blushed, stood up and saluted, saying, "I'm sorry for being rude. I'm sorry for the offense." After saying that, he bowed deeply to Yang Mingxi.

Yang Mingxi smiled and said, "There aren't so many rules in a small farmyard. Please tell me."

The fourth son of the Mei family bowed again, then smiled and said, "Miss Yang, I think there's another drawback to your plan of sowing the seedlings and then transplanting them. The field must be watered when transplanting, which makes it inconvenient to use a hoe. So how can you transplant the seedlings to another field? And there's another question. You said that the seedlings from one acre of land can be transplanted to ten acres. That seedlings are too sparse, and the yield won't increase."
