Chapter 18 Going to the County

After dinner, Old Man Yang invited everyone to the yard to arrange things for the afternoon. Seeing everyone walking slowly while holding their stomachs, Yang Mingxi smiled!

Sixth Aunt and her group had a good morning's harvest! There were piles of pheasants and rabbits, estimated to be at least 20 or 30 of each. They wouldn't be enough for the banquet, so Old Man Yang instructed his sixth son and several grandsons to pick them all up. Any leftovers should be pickled first, either for Yang Laoqi's wedding in twenty days or to save for future cured chicken and rabbit. Spores harvested eight large ones today, three and a half, plus the one and a half from yesterday, for a total of four and a half. They'll be slaughtered for the banquet, and the rest will be handled the same way!

There was also a goat with a big belly, so it must be pregnant. Yang Minghu suggested hunting it down and raising it so that the seventh brother could have milk in the future. Old Man Yang agreed, but the barn was already full of animals and there was no room for Yang Minghu to raise the goat, so the goat could only be tied up next to the barn temporarily.

For the remaining eight roe deer, Old Man Yang asked Old Seven Yang to take his grandson to the county to sell them, and to bring back Old Third Yang's family of four.

When Yang Mingxi heard about going to the county or to see her third uncle, she said she wanted to go too, as she had something important to ask her third uncle to handle. Old Man Yang nodded and said, "Xi girl, I shouldn't have stopped you from going to the county, but the fish we had at noon was delicious. Your aunt said it was mainly because you prepared it well. I plan to add another fish to tomorrow's banquet, but if you go to the county, there will be no one to prepare the fish. I think this is also a skill, so it's better to keep it secret. So I'll have to trouble you to prepare the fish. Go catch fish when you have nothing to do, and have fish in the evening."

When Yang Mingxi heard about this, she was about to say that it was a simple matter and she could leave it to everyone, but then she heard Yang Mingyu say, "Grandpa, let Xier go. Processing fish is a very smelly job and it's not suitable for Xier. Besides, I already know how to process it, so I can handle the fish. There are so many roe deer, it's best to drive an ox cart. Xier is familiar with oxen, so it would be more suitable for her to go to the county."

Old Man Yang nodded in agreement and then went on to discuss the eight dishes for the banquet: four hot dishes: braised roe deer, boiled fish, chicken stewed with potatoes, and pork belly; two cold dishes: spicy rabbit and tofu with scallions; a dessert: steamed pumpkin; and fried peanuts as a dried vegetable. Everyone agreed, and then they told Old Man Yang to buy half a pig, which would be enough for the banquet.

Yang Mingxi listened, thought for a moment, and said, "Grandpa, how about this? Remove the pork belly from the four hot dishes and use the spicy rabbit instead. I'll make the whole braised pig's head a cold dish and the tofu and eggs a braised platter, which will be two cold dishes. How about leaving the other dishes the same?"

After hearing this, Old Man Yang hesitated for a moment, but when he thought that his seven granddaughters could cook stinky fish so deliciously, pig's head should be no problem either, at least it's meat, so he nodded in agreement!

In order not to delay the sale of roe deer, Old Man Yang asked all the people who had been arranged to return to their respective positions, and he asked his wife to arrange for the wives to prepare tomorrow's staple food.

Uncle Yang Qi took Yang Mingyang and Yang Mingxi with him, driving an oxcart loaded with roe deer, to the county town! Yang Mingyang had volunteered to follow, saying he wanted to help his third sister drive the oxcart. Once he learned how to do it, the third sister wouldn't have to do it herself. The Yang family didn't have any oxen, so no one knew how to drive an oxcart.

In about a cup of tea's time, Yang Mingxi and the other two drove the old ox and pulled the heavy roe deer into the county town. They planned to find Yang Laosan first and let Yang Laosan take them to sell the roe deer, after all, Yang Laosan was more familiar with the county town.

Under the command of Uncle Yang Qi, Yang Mingyang drove the ox cart to a cloth shop. Uncle Yang Qi went in to look for someone. Yang Mingxi looked around and looked again until she saw the Rulai Inn not far behind. Only then did she dare to confirm that this was the cloth shop where she had spent three hundred copper coins to buy two sets of cotton clothes.
