Space Food Storage: Daily Travel
Chapter 41: Escape from Famine and Plague Breaks Out
Liu Yuhan and his parents walked to the small mountain village where they had camped before. It was already dark, so they decided to stay in the village for one night.
While her parents were cleaning up the place, Liu Yuhan went into the space to get some food. She took out two pots, one for cooking white rice. This was the first time she had eaten pure white rice in the two months since she traveled through time. Pure! She felt that she had it really hard.
When the rice is almost cooked, steam an egg on it. In another pan, stir-fry pork belly with chili peppers, serve the pork belly with chili peppers, and then make a simple egg, seaweed and chopped green onion soup.
The three of them had a delicious meal.
Liu Yuhan boiled a bucket of hot water in the space and took it out. He then took a few more wooden buckets and filled them with water, leaving some for his parents to wash up properly.
Liu Yuhan went to the next room to rest, leaving the other space for his parents, and told them that he was going into the space to sleep.
Liu Yuhan closed the door and went into the space to wash up.
She took out a set of men's clothing that suited her from the clothes given to her by Xiao Yan, washed it, and hung it up to dry to wear the next day.
After preparing everything to eat and drink for tomorrow, I set the alarm and went to bed.
After breakfast, Liu Yuhan changed into men's clothes, put her hair up, helped them put on their N95 masks, put her own on, and then covered her face with a scarf. Then she headed towards Yiyang City.
The road to Yiyang City was not blocked except for some fallen rocks. In addition, people who had passed by before had already cleared some of the road, so it was still passable.
The three of them quickened their pace and reached the outskirts of the city in just two days, covering 80 kilometers.
They saw that the official road leading to Yiyang City was in good condition and thought that the earthquake in Yiyang City would not be very serious, but the situation was the opposite of what they expected.
Even the edge of the Yiyang city gate had collapsed, and more than 10 people were working on it. Yamen runners were distributing porridge at the gate, and an endless line of disaster victims lined up to receive it.
"It seems that the prefect of Yiyang City is not bad." Liu said.
It had been five days since the earthquake, and they didn't know what was happening in the city, so they decided to go in and take a look.
Liu Yuhan asked them to put on their masks, took disinfectant from the space and sprayed it on them, and told his parents to stay away from the crowd as much as possible.
The three of them hurried into the city, and the gates were still open. Their current view wasn't very clear, but as far as they could see, the buildings along the main road weren't severely damaged.
I don’t know whether they are civilians in the city or refugees from outside. They are sitting or lying in groups of three or four against the wall.
Liu Yuhan saw that some people had flushed faces, some were trembling, and one was even coughing up blood!
"Another short-lived ghost. I'm so cold, I'm going to die too..." A middle-aged man said while shaking, his face full of despair, as if he was no longer surprised.
So many people have died in the past two days. The bailiffs will take the dead away and bury them in a big pit outside the city gate.
He was going to be buried in that big pit, right? Let him die. His wife and children were already dead, so there was no point in him living...
Liu Yuhan's heart beat violently when she saw this scene. She had been searching Baidu and copying things down for the past few days. She had a high fever, was trembling, and was coughing up blood... This was an acute infectious disease, a plague!
Liu Yuhan's hand trembled a little as she held Liu's hand. She suddenly regretted bringing her parents here.
If it was a plague, she would have taken them along with her in the plague circle by now.
They are so close to the source of infection. If something happens to them, what will happen to their families?
Liu grabbed her daughter's hand and asked her softly what was wrong.
"Dad, Mom, this must be an epidemic, we..."
What! Liu Shinan almost shouted out those two words.
"Dad, Mom, can we go to the government office?"
"Okay, let's go together, my girl. Don't think too much. You put this on us and used medicine. We will be fine." Liu said gently, and Liu Shinan nodded.
The three of them walked quickly towards the yamen.
When they arrived at the yamen, the gatekeeper asked them what they wanted.
"Brother bailiff, can we see the prefect? We have something to report." Liu Yuhan said in a low voice.
"Our master is busy and not in the yamen. Please leave quickly."
"Excuse me, where is the prefect?"
"It's either in Mingshan Hall or in the resettlement center for disaster victims outside the city." The bailiff said impatiently.
Liu Shinan bowed to him, and the three of them asked a woman what Mingshan Hall did and where it was located.
"Mingshantang is right at the edge of the southern city. Go straight along this road. There are several old doctors in Mingshantang. The city is suffering from illness right now. It's very serious. You should not wander around without permission."
"Thank you for telling me, Auntie. I should also go out less."
The three of them walked towards Mingshan Hall, which turned out to be a large pharmacy. Recently, people in the city had been falling ill one after another, and the pharmacy was full of people.
An uninhabited three-story courtyard next door was requisitioned by the prefect to house patients.
Liu Yuhan got a general idea of the situation through a visit.
Patients with high fever began to be discovered about two days ago. Some of them fainted, some began coughing up blood, and some died within a day or two after severe coughing up blood.
The prefect Wen Tianming was busy as a bee.
Yiyang City is not small, with a population of 20.
As a third-rank official, he thought he had worked diligently. Now that he was over 50, this was how his life would be.
Because of the drought, we had to work hard to get some food from other places and give out some porridge every day to keep these poor people alive.
Who knew there would be another earthquake! Houses collapsed, and he ordered the people in the government office to rescue the victims. Those who could not be rescued or who died were also ordered to find land to bury.
They worked day and night for five days, and even the city gate was not repaired in time.
After five days, those who could not be rescued would not survive. In two days, people were ordered to repair the house.
Who would have thought, who would have thought, since yesterday, people have suddenly fallen ill, people have died, it seems God wants him to die, God wants him to die...
Wen Tianming was going crazy, he might as well be crazy.
There is a shortage of food and medical care, and the patients cannot be cured well. Several old doctors are more worried than he is, but he cannot push them too hard.
But seeing people die every day, he was terrified. What sin had Yiyang City committed?!
Liu Yuhan finally met the prefect, Wen Tianming. He was a short, fat old man with a frown so thick it could have killed a fly. He sat in the compartment behind the medicine cabinet, watching the old doctor prepare the medicine.
"Excuse me, are you the prefect? May I speak further?" Liu Shinan bowed to the prefect.
"Who are you? What's the matter?"
"We are fleeing from famine in Luoyang County. Your Excellency, I would like to report to you about the patient." Liu Yuhan really didn't want to exchange too many pleasantries.
"Okay, follow me to the back, little brother, and you can speak." The prefect walked to the empty hall at the back of the pharmacy and motioned for them to speak.
"Sir, did these patients initially have high fevers and fatigue? In severe cases, were they unconscious, had purple limbs, and were coughing up blood? Or even died?"
"You, how did you know?"
"Has your Excellency never thought about this, or heard of the plague?"
"What! Epidemic...disease...! It's actually an epidemic? This, this..." The prefect stood up in fear, his body a little unsteady, and he supported himself on the table.
"What!? It's an epidemic!? Miss Xiaohan, is that you?" When Doctor Liu saw Liu Shinan and his wife, he guessed that it was Liu Yuhan who was speaking.
"Doctor Liu, why are you here? Aren't you going to the capital?"
"Well, let's not talk about this for now. Miss Xiaohan, could you please tell me in detail? Oh, the prefect is here too, I need to report to him in detail."
The prefect nodded, not caring about Doctor Liu's rudeness.
Liu Yuhan told them everything he knew in detail.
He also asked Dr. Liu in detail about the patient's condition, which was similar to what Liu Yuhan had guessed.
Some patients developed high fevers, coughing up blood, but only for two or three days. Even those who didn't cough up blood had purple bruises on their limbs and were unconscious. Many came one family at a time.
Liu Yuhan was chilled by the speed of the spread!
