Sir Song, do you want to pledge yourself to me?
Chapter 19: Promise Yourself in Repayment
The Ji family worked together and finally carried the wild boar back to the village. The villagers who saw it quickly told their acquaintances, and soon the entire Taohua Village knew the news. The villagers came out of their homes and gathered in front of the Ji family's door, discussing the matter with curiosity.
"Oh my, is this the wild boar that the Ji family's children hunted? It's amazing!"
"Yeah, I heard from Jin Dou'er that it was Ji Nuan who kicked her to death!"
"Such a big wild boar, the Ji family can eat it for a long time!"
The villagers' exclamations and envy rose one after another.
A villager who heard the news ran to the Ji family's new house and told Ji's father the news. Ji's father was busy sorting out the materials for building the new house. When he heard that his children had brought back a big wild boar, he immediately put down his work and hurried home with his two sons.
After sending the onlookers away, Ji's mother saw her sons busy preparing the wild boar. She then gave Ji Wei a pheasant and said, "Wei'er, take this pheasant home first and ask your mother to cook it as an extra dish tonight. Once they've finished preparing the wild boar, we'll bring you the meat."
Ji Wei took the pheasant, thanked him, and then happily took the pheasant home.
In the evening, the whole family gathered around the dinner table, everyone's face was filled with smiles. The dishes on the table exuded an alluring aroma. The braised pork was a perfect match of fat and lean meat, melting in the mouth; the cold-mixed black fungus, stir-fried wormwood with garlic, and stir-fried pheasant eggs with chives were refreshing and delicious; the stewed pheasant soup was so delicious that it was hard not to eat more.
My second sister-in-law seemed to have really forgotten the fear she had during the day. She enthusiastically told everyone what had happened.
"Oh, you didn't see it. When the wild boar rushed over, its eyes were as big as copper bells, and the fangs in its mouth flashed coldly. It was like a beast rushing out of hell!" The second sister-in-law said while gesturing.
"But do you know? I was so scared at that time that I couldn't move my hands and feet. I thought I was dead this time. It was Nuannuan. She flew over and kicked the wild boar in the belly. The wild boar was like being struck by lightning, and fell to the ground with a bang!" The second sister-in-law's voice became louder and louder, and her description became more and more exaggerated, making the listeners exclaim from time to time.
"What do you think, Nuannuan is amazing?" The second sister-in-law concluded, her face filled with pride.
"Yeah, little sister has always been awesome!" The second brother immediately nodded in agreement.
The others nodded as well, but Father Ji looked at his daughter curiously and asked, "Nuannuan, did Doctor Du teach you all this?"
Ji Nuan smiled and replied, "Yes, Dad. Doctor Du not only taught me medical skills, but also some basic self-defense skills. In the past few years, I have been studying the medical books left by Doctor Du."
After hearing this, Ji's father was even more grateful for Doctor Du's kindness. If Ji Nuan hadn't learned some skills from Doctor Du, the safety of the children in the family would be in jeopardy today.
"Tomorrow I will go to burn some paper money for Doctor Du. From now on, you will go to Doctor Du's grave to pay your respects every Qingming Festival." As soon as Ji's mother finished speaking, the whole hall seemed to be quiet. Soon, they understood what Ji's mother meant, and their hearts were filled with gratitude towards Doctor Du.
Ji Nuan had no objection. She had used Doctor Du's name too many times, so it was only right to pay tribute to him.
"Xiaoshan, go to your uncle's house later and deliver two kilograms of wild boar meat." Ji's mother changed the subject and instructed Ji Shan.
Then, she turned to Ji He and said, "Wei'er, you must have worked hard going up the mountain with them. Xiaohe, go and deliver ten kilograms of wild boar meat to your third uncle's house."
"You two sisters-in-law, each of you should send a large pig's trotter to your parents' home tomorrow morning." Ji's mother said to the two daughters-in-law, "We have just finished the spring planting, so let the family have something good to nourish them."
The two sisters-in-law hurriedly expressed their gratitude.
"There are two pig's trotters left. I'll rub some salt on them and you can take them away the day after tomorrow, Xiaochuan." Ji's mother said to Ji Chuan, "Give one to Shopkeeper Tao to thank him for taking care of you over the past two years. And give the other one to Shopkeeper Song at Ping'an Clinic to thank him for helping Nuannuan."
Ji Chuan nodded. Her mother always arranged all these social etiquette in an orderly manner.
After dinner, Ji Shan and Ji He went out to deliver wild boar meat.
After Ji Nuan finished washing up, she returned to her room and began to concentrate on making the pills. After everything was quiet and she was sure everyone was asleep, she tiptoed over the wall and left.
The wooden house at the bottom of the cliff was shrouded in darkness, appearing exceptionally quiet. Ji Nuan, drawing on the faint moonlight, lit an oil lamp, its dim glow instantly dispelling the surrounding darkness. Holding the lamp, she slowly walked towards the bed, her gaze settling on the person lying there.
"Hey, are you awake?" Ji Nuan asked softly.
The person on the bed moved slightly, and then a low but clear voice sounded in the room: "Song Jinbai, my name is."
"Oh." Ji Nuan nodded slightly, indicating that she remembered the name. "Song Jinbai, do you want to eat now? I brought two steamed buns." As she spoke, she handed over one wrapped in oil paper.
Song Jinbai took the oil-paper bag, his fingers trembling slightly.
"Thank you!"
Ji Nuan took a few steps forward and helped him sit up on the bed. He was only wearing pants under the quilt, and if he sat up, the quilt would slide down and expose his chest, which made him look a little uncomfortable.
He had been hungry since he drank a bowl of porridge in the morning, and now he was satisfied with having two steamed buns.
Seeing that he was choking on the dry steamed buns, Ji Nuan went outside to get a bowl of vital water and brought it in, gently placing it beside the bed.
"Thank you!" Song Jinbai thanked him again, his voice more sincere. He picked up the bowl and took a sip. The clear and sweet water instantly moistened his throat, and the wounds on his body seemed to be less painful.
Ji Nuan smiled slightly, her peach blossom eyes curved, and said, "I just saved you casually, and I did all this just to make you get better soon. You don't have to thank me all the time."
Song Jinbai said seriously: "I was seriously injured and fell off a cliff. When my life was hanging by a thread, you saved me. I have no way to repay you for saving my life now. I can only..." I will repay you after I recover from my injuries.
Before he could finish, Ji Nuan smiled mischievously and added, "I can only repay you with my body."
Song Jinbai's expression suddenly became serious, and he said seriously: "Miss, don't say such things anymore, I have someone I like!" He thought that this girl was kind-hearted and saved him, but he didn't expect that she was the same as those women in the capital.
Ji Nuan just said it as a joke because she had watched too many similar plots, but she had no idea that it would make people think too much.
Seeing his unhappy expression, she realized that her joke might have been misunderstood. She quickly explained, "I just said it casually. I didn't mean anything else. I won't use my life-saving grace to blackmail you into doing anything."
Seeing that he still had no expression, Ji Nuan assumed he didn't believe her explanation. So, she added, "You only need to pay me two taels for the consultation." That way, we're even, and you don't have to worry about me using my life-saving grace for anything else.
"This is an oral pill, three times a day, one pill at a time." Ji Nuan pulled a delicate little bottle from her sleeve and gently placed it beside the bed, her tone calm and professional. She didn't want to explain any further, leaving it up to him to believe or not. With that, she turned and left, leaving no room for awkwardness between them.
Song Jinbai watched her walk away, a complex mix of emotions welling up in his heart. He realized that he had truly misunderstood her. This girl's behavior was completely different from those scheming women in the capital.
He looked down at the small medicine bottle beside the bed and thought to himself. He was seriously injured and unable to move. If she really had any bad intentions, he would not be able to resist.
Song Jinbai couldn't help but sigh softly.
