Even in the 1970s, people still lined up in front of department stores in Beijing, with security guards in white uniforms maintaining order. Lin Ruan looked at the people at the front of the line. Most of them were wearing thick acrylic padded jackets or military coats, while a few wore woolen coats, stamping their feet as they waited.

"Ruanruan," Lin's mother said to Lin Ruan when she saw someone wearing a woolen coat, "Don't say anything. Although people say these woolen coats aren't as warm as cotton-padded jackets, they look good when you wear them. If there's one in the mall later, I'll buy you one. It's Chinese New Year, so a red one is perfect for festive wear."

Lin Ruan glanced at her mother's cotton coat and nodded. "Okay, by the way, I brought some clothes for you as well. I was so happy yesterday that I forgot to take them out. I'll show them to you when I get home."

Mother Lin touched her head and smiled, "Silly child, keep all the money you have. The money your parents send you every month plus your salary is for you to spend. We are still young and can earn money. It's not time for you to support us yet."

Lin Ruan said coquettishly: "I know, but after all, the cotton-padded clothes in Northeast China are still warm, so I wanted to bring them to you. Doesn't this mean that I have been thinking about you in my heart?"

As they talked, the mother and daughter entered the mall. It was crowded with people and the dazzling array of goods was dazzling.

They walked straight to the clothing counter. Lin's mother's eyes quickly swept over the clothes on display. Suddenly, her eyes lit up and stopped on a red tweed coat.

Lin's mother reached out and grabbed Lin Ruan without hesitation, saying excitedly: "Ruan Ruan, come and try this one!" Lin Ruan obediently followed her mother into the fitting room and put on the red tweed coat.

Lin Ruan had no particular aversion to bright red and purple; as long as they weren't overly tacky floral patterns, she was fine with them. This red tweed coat, not only had a vibrant color but also fit her perfectly, making her look even more vibrant and attractive.

Mother Lin looked at her daughter, her eyes filled with joy and pride. She nodded with satisfaction and said, "That's it. Mom will pay." After that, she quickly walked to the cashier and took out the bill to pay without hesitation.

After paying, Lin's mother enthusiastically took Lin Ruan to continue shopping. They went to the shoe section and picked out a pair of exquisite leather shoes; then they chose a suitable pair of pants in the pants section; and finally, they picked out a white turtleneck sweater in the sweater section.

After all the goods were purchased, Lin's mother finally left the counter on this floor with satisfaction and went to the grocery area.

The two of them came to the supplementary food area. Lin Ruan pretended to be excited when she saw the various snacks and ran over to choose.

Lin's mother followed behind with a smile. Seeing her daughter as happy as a child, she also felt very satisfied.

It was almost noon when they finished buying these. Lin Ruan originally wanted to take her mother out to eat, but her mother said, "Your father didn't go to work today. He should have cooked dinner at home by now. If you want to eat at a restaurant, we can go tomorrow at noon, okay, my daughter?"

What's wrong with that? Lin Ruan nodded, and the two of them returned home carrying their bags.

When they opened the door, the aroma of food filled their nostrils. Father Lin heard the sound and came out of the kitchen. He took the things from the two people and said, "Are you tired? Wash your hands quickly and get ready for dinner."

The family of three sat happily at the dinner table, eating and chatting. Lin Ruan told some funny stories about his life in the countryside that he had made up, and Lin's father and mother listened with great interest.

After dinner, Lin Ruan helped her mother clean up the dishes, then Lin Ruan walked into the room and opened the package. She didn't actually bring any clothes for her father and mother, but this didn't bother her. She found two thin down jackets in the space, one gray and one purple. The colors were not good and the style was rather old-fashioned. They looked like the kind her mother wore when she was young in her memory.

But at least it is a down jacket, which is much warmer than the acrylic cotton jackets that people often wear nowadays.

She took the two pieces of clothing out of the room, handed them to Lin's parents, and whispered, "Director Sun, whom I follow, has a relative who works in the transportation team. He said these clothes were made in a factory in the south. They're filled with duck down, called down jackets, and they were sold exclusively for foreign exchange. They only had these defective pieces with the labels cut off and sold to factory workers. He traded them for more than a dozen pieces. I kept a thicker one for myself. These two are for you. They're a little thinner, but much warmer than cotton jackets, and they're also lighter. Come and try them on."

Father Lin's expression turned serious, and he subconsciously lowered his voice: "Daughter, tell me the truth, did you go to the black market?"

Lin Ruan was stunned at first when she heard her father's words, but then she immediately realized what was happening. But she didn't feel guilty or afraid. She said confidently, "Dad, why would you think that? How could I possibly go to the black market? Do you think I'm that stupid? I was all alone there, unfamiliar with the place. How could I dare go to the black market? Wouldn't that be walking into a trap?"

Father Lin finally breathed a sigh of relief, a relieved smile on his face: "That's good, I don't know my daughter well enough." He patted Lin Ruan's shoulder to express his trust and support for her.

"This dress is really nice, light and warm." Lin's mother praised it highly.

"Mom, as long as you like it, I'll get you a few better-looking ones later." Lin Ruan said with a smile.

"Don't spend money. Just take good care of yourself over there and we will be relieved." Father Lin patted Lin Ruan's shoulder.

The family sat together, and a warm atmosphere filled the whole room.

After another happy day, the next day Lin's father told her a piece of news: Lin Ruan's elder brother Lin Bingkun would be back from the army in two days.

Lin Bingkun, the original owner's elder brother, is 26 years old and unmarried. He is a company commander in the army. Before this, he sent 10 yuan plus various bills to Lin Ruan from the army every month.

The most regrettable thing is that in the original owner's memory, the eldest brother was a silent and serious person. He might not accept Lin Ruan and Gu Jiye's marriage agreement. He was also a soldier. Would he side with Gu Jiye and say that she was fooling around?

What about Lin's father and mother? Will they speak on Lin Bingkun's side?

Thinking of this, Lin Ruan felt a little sorry. They were good parents, but it was a pity that there would still be distance between them because of the estrangement.

The system said: "Host, don't you think you're overthinking it? What if Lin Bingkun isn't the person you think he is? What if Lin's father and mother are on your side?"

Lin Ruan smiled and said, "That's a pleasant surprise."

Perhaps it was the emotional module, but the system found Lin Ruan both torn and pitiful. On the one hand, she seemed to believe the world should revolve around her, yet on the other, she seemed to harbor no expectations of anyone, as if she simply didn't deserve to be treated well.

It knew that people were complex and contradictory, but it was rare and pitiful to find someone as extreme as Lin Ruan.
