Xia Chu didn't know what was going on outside. He only heard the silence around him, but soon the matchmaker kept saying auspicious words and the scene became lively again.
She was helped out of the sedan chair, across the threshold, and past the brazier, the red silk in her hand connected to Zhao Huazhang's. The other party accommodated her pace and walked forward slowly.
After the dizzy wedding ceremony, she was sent to the bridal chamber.
The matchmaker and Mrs. Quanfu finished their auspicious words and left. Only she and Cuihua were left in the room. Cuihua whispered, "Are you hungry, Miss?"
"Fortunately, I'm not very hungry. It's just that my head is too heavy, and my neck seems to be shortened." Xia Chu stretched out her hand to support her bun. She felt that these headdresses weighed at least seven or eight pounds, and her whole body was top-heavy. She almost couldn't get up after the wedding ceremony just now, and it was Zhao Huazhang who quietly supported her.
"Miss, please be patient. You can't take it off now." Not only can the headdress not be taken off, but the veil cannot be lifted either.
"What's this bed? It's so uncomfortable." Xia Chu sat for a while, then felt very uncomfortable and stood up. She felt something round and heavy in her hand, and lifted the quilt to take a look. Red dates, peanuts, longans, lotus seeds, and chestnuts were spread all over the bed.
"You can't sweep them away now. Let me move some to the side." Cuihua helped her brush those things to the other side. Xia Chu sat down again and leaned her head against the bedpost. Her neck hurt.
"Young Madam, I've brought you some food." Someone knocked on the door.
"Come in." Xia Chu responded.
The door to the new house was unlocked, and Xiangcheng walked right in. She was holding a food box and said to Cuihua with a smile, "My name is Xiangcheng, and I work for the old lady. She was worried that the young lady was hungry, so she sent me over to bring some food."
"Thank you for me," Xia Chu paused. Now that she was married, she naturally couldn't call her old lady anymore. She changed her words and said, "Thank you for me, grandma."
"Yes, Madam, please feel free to eat some. If it doesn't suit your taste, just call me again. I'll be waiting at the door." Citron said, and went out and closed the door.
Cuihua opened it and saw some light and delicate dishes, as well as a small bowl of bird's nest porridge, which was obviously specially made. "Miss, come and have some."
The veil could not be lifted, so Cuihua helped Xia Chu walk to the table and served her dishes according to her taste.
"You should eat something too." Seeing that she had been standing, Xia Chu asked her to sit down. Cuihua didn't have a contract to sell her body, so she didn't need to marry with her. Jia Qingwu arranged for a few maids and servants to come with her. Xia Chu wanted to refuse, but it was her pride. If she didn't bring anyone with her, she would not only be laughed at, but also looked down upon by other families.
Cuihua insisted on coming here, and Cuiya also wanted to follow, but Xiachu didn't agree. Cuihua knelt on the ground and cried, saying that the young lady would get married without anyone familiar around her, and she was all alone, and she just wanted to follow the young lady for the rest of her life.
In the end, Xia Chu still took Cuihua with her, but one extra girl would make it an odd number, so she could only take Cuiya with her as well.
In fact, Cui Ya treated very well in the Wang family. Dong Xiaohuan had no idea of superiority or inferiority. Although she did not treat them as well as Xia Chu, she still treated them as juniors in the family.
The two of them were grateful and worked harder, and in their hearts they also regarded the Wang family as their own home. Dong Xiaohuan knew their ages and said that she would find good families for them to marry.
Cuihua refused. Cuiya had some ideas, but she was used to following Cuihua. This time, they didn't have to get married for the time being.
Cuihua knew Xia Chu's personality and did not refuse, "I will eat after the lady finishes her meal."
After they both finished eating, they cleared away the plates and bowls. Citron took them, asked Cuihua a few questions about Xiachu's food preferences, and then left with the food box.
Not long after, the matchmaker and Mrs. Quanfu arrived after finishing their meal. They had a mission and couldn't drink. Zhao Huazhang also arrived. After he finished entertaining the guests, he was about to lift the veil for the bride before going to the wedding banquet to thank the guests.
Zhao Huazhang tightened his grip on the scale bar, nearly breaking it. The moment the veil was lifted, Xia Chu raised her eyes and looked at him.
His heart felt like it was gently touched, softening and numbing. His eyes were filled with amazement, and it took several reminders from the matchmaker before he finally remembered to drink the wedding wine.
Mrs. Quanfu cut off a small lock of hair from both of them, tied a heart-shaped knot, stuffed it into a festive red brocade bag, and placed it under the pillow.
Zhao Huazhang's face tensed. They had clearly been intimate before, but his heart was trembling slightly. Their heads leaned closer, their hands crossed as they drank from their glasses.
Xia Chu couldn't hold her liquor well, so the glass was filled with alcohol-smelling water. She was a little nervous herself, but seeing Zhao Huazhang was even more nervous than she was, she pursed her lips and smiled.
Zhao Huazhang was stunned. After being urged several times by the matchmaker, he reluctantly went to the front to entertain the guests.
Mrs. Zhao was my sister-in-law, so it wasn't convenient for her to come. Her son was older, so she couldn't come either. Her youngest daughter was only five years old, so coming would only cause trouble. Luo Shanshan did have a daughter, but Mrs. Zhao had seen her. She had been misled by her mother, so she wasn't allowed to accompany the bride.
Xia Chu was happy to have some peace and quiet, her veil lifted and she felt relieved, but she couldn't take her hair off. Later, after the groom sent off the guests, someone else would come to disturb the bridal chamber.
I hope those people can be more sensible and not cause unpleasantness.
She'd seen plenty of wedding pranks go too far and cause trouble, but Xia Chu wasn't too worried. Judging from the attitudes of Zhao Huazhang's friends she'd met last time, they all knew their limits and were very respectful to her.
I was chatting with Cuihua idly until she felt sleepy. When she was about to fall asleep leaning against the bedpost, she heard a commotion outside.
Xia Chu sat up in shock. The door was pushed open and Zhao Huazhang was the first to walk in. He quickly pushed the door open and bolted it.
Wang Zhuojun was caught off guard and nearly fell. He laughed in anger, "Why is Mr. Zhao so cowardly? Don't you even dare to let the brothers go in and take a look at your sister-in-law?"
Zhao Huazhang had drunk quite a bit, and while he wasn't completely drunk, he wasn't completely sober either. He'd lost control of his strength just now, and he'd leaned against the door, listening to what was said outside and refusing to open it.
After a long time, Wang Zhuojun and others left in disappointment.
Cuihua lowered her head, called out "Young Master", and went out.
Zhao Huazhang walked to the bedside and the two looked at each other in silence.
A maid brought hot water and sobering soup outside the door. Zhao Huazhang took it, took a shower and changed his clothes. Only when he felt that he no longer smelled of alcohol did he sit down on the edge of the bed again.
Xia Chu couldn't help but ask, "What? Are we going to sit like this until dawn?"
Zhao Huazhang's face was already a little red from the alcohol, but now it was barely noticeable. He rubbed his fingers nervously, his mouth dry as he recalled the fire avoidance diagrams he had seen.
Seeing that he still didn't move, Xia Chu could only stand up. Before she took a step, Zhao Huazhang grabbed her wrist and said, "Don't, don't be angry."
"What are you angry about?" Xia Chu was confused. "These things are so heavy on my head. I'm going to take them apart."
Zhao Huazhang said "oh" and then realized what was going on when he saw the girl's hair full of jewels and jade. "I'll help you."
