The old lady roared, "Kneel down." The master knelt down as she was told, though he didn't understand why. Mao Feng, observing the situation inside the house, knelt down as well.
The eldest master saw a letter being thrown at him. He took the letter, took a look at it and threw it aside. "Mother, the content of the letter is pure nonsense." The old lady narrowed her eyes and turned her head to look at Qin.
Qin was furious. "Master, it's clearly written in black and white that Mao is a Yangzhou prostitute. Why are you still biased towards her? We in the Ping'an Marquis Mansion have never had such a rule."
The old lady frowned and looked at Mao, "Miss Feng, please tell me yourself."
Mao's heart skipped a beat. She knelt forward in panic for a few seconds. When she looked up again, her face was wet with tears. "Madam, please allow me to inform you that I am originally from Maojia Village, Liushuwa, Yangzhou. My family only has me, my sister, and my father, Mao Daqiang. Because Yangzhou has been suffering from famine for many years, and my father is a gambler, he owed thirty taels of silver to the gambling house three years ago. So he sold my sister—" Mao burst into tears. "He sold my sister to that shameful place." She leaned over and cried bitterly. "Three years later, he sold me again."
Qin glared at her and said, "How dare you quibble, you bitch? You're looking at everyone who doesn't know about your dirty tricks." After saying that, she motioned for Nanny Qin to come forward.
Nanny Qin stood in the middle, bowed respectfully, and said, "Greetings, old madam. The first time I saw Mao, I could tell she was no longer a virgin." Nanny Qin paused and said, "Words are not enough. I went to the gatehouse, and sure enough, I didn't see any bleeding."
The old lady rubbed her forehead, as if disappointed. "Mao, do you have anything else to say?"
Mao finally straightened up and looked at Qin, who was ready to die. "I admit that I was not a virgin before I entered the mansion. It was all because my father sold me to a rich man from the same village as a concubine due to gambling debts. The rich man tortured me day and night and made me want to die but couldn't. Finally, the rich man died of illness a year ago. His family couldn't tolerate me and kicked me out. I had nowhere to go but to return home. Who knew—" Mao's face was gloomy, "I saw my father being carried back. He was breathing more than he was breathing. It was because of the gambling debts. The gambling house saw that there was no money to be made from him, so they beat him up and threw him back."
After saying that, Mao gently wiped the tears from her cheeks and looked at Qin. "Madam, I have acknowledged everything I should have acknowledged. Madam, you must have made a mistake in thinking I was your sister. I look alike to my sister, just like our mother who passed away so long ago."
Mao stopped crying and looked at the master with tearful eyes. Her voice seemed to be filled with infinite friendship, "Thank you for your kindness over the past few days, master. I have no way to repay you. If I have an afterlife, I will work like a slave to repay your kindness today." After that, she turned around and rushed straight to the pillar behind.
The master couldn't catch up with her and could only grab a corner of her clothes. With a "bang", Mao's body collapsed to the ground with blood gushing from her forehead. She was unconscious.
The master didn't care about anything else and hurriedly carried the person to find a doctor.
"Stop!" the old lady shouted angrily, "Where are you going to carry this person? Are you going to walk through the halls and streets and let the whole city laugh at our mansion?" Qin Shi stood up slowly and tried to comfort her, "Don't get yourself sick, old lady. She's just a lowly servant."
The eldest master stopped immediately and looked at Qin with a serious look, "If anything happens to Mao, I will divorce her in the future." Qin sneered.
Dujuan led people to settle Mao in the back room, and asked someone to call a doctor.
Mao woke up drowsily with a severe headache. She struggled to raise half of her body and saw that the furnishings in the room were ordinary. There was an oil lamp lit on the table not far away. The little maid heard the noise and climbed up from the table and said in surprise, "Miss Mao, you are awake. Wait a minute, I will go call Sister Dujuan." After that, she ran out.
Mao lay down again, staring blankly at the tent above her head. After a moment, she raised her hand and gently covered her lower abdomen, with a barely perceptible smile on the corner of her mouth.
"Miss Mao, you're awake now. Are you feeling unwell?" Du Juan carried a load of food boxes and placed them on the table, saying softly, "This is our old lady's courtyard. You can rest assured and stay here. If you need anything, please ask the maid to let me know. We can provide whatever we have in the mansion." She added, "The doctor said that the young lady is already one month pregnant. The mansion has been busy with affairs recently, and the young lady has injured her forehead. If it happens again, the baby will be lost. I hope the young lady takes care of herself."
Mao was initially incredulous, then burst into tears of joy. "Really?" she said, and was about to kneel down to thank him. Du Juan quickly restrained her and said angrily, "Young lady, what are you doing? It's not me you should be thanking." She then gave the maid a few words and turned to leave.
"How is it?" The old lady was kneeling before the Buddha with her eyes closed, beating the wooden fish repeatedly. Du Juan knelt beside her and said respectfully, "Madam Mao seems to be fine." The old lady nodded slightly and said, "That's good. Take good care of her."
In the east wing and backyard, everyone was feeling threatened. The master and his mistress had a huge argument since returning from the old lady's visit, and his mistress had been bedridden for three days. "Go, call Cheng," Qin said weakly, leaning against the pillow with her headband on.
Nanny Qin's eyes were filled with distress. "Miss, things have come to this point. Your health is the most important thing."
Qin shook her head slightly, a splitting headache coming on. "I won't be able to live in peace until I get rid of that little bitch."
"But..." Nanny Qin said helplessly, "Madam Mao has been placed in Yannian Hall by the old lady. I have tried to pay several times but still can't get in."
Qin's face flushed and she gasped, "It's all because this evil creature is useless. If he had something useful to offer, he wouldn't have let the old lady have other ideas." Then she raised her hand and pointed to the door, "Go and call him over, quickly!"
Nanny Qin had no choice but to obey the order and go to the front yard.
Life was peaceful in the west wing. It was early winter, and the mornings and evenings were chilly. Taking advantage of the good weather today, Zhang had thick mats spread out under a tree at noon, and took the young master and young lady out to play. Nanny Chang led several maids to make clothes in the corridor. The young masters were growing taller every year, and making clothes was simply too much for them.
"Brother, here." Yunjieer picked up a leaf from outside and stumbled towards Huige'er. She stumbled and fell straight forward. Wangge'er was squatting on the ground watching the ants busy moving things. Yunjieer threw him down, and the two of them fell straight forward and fell together. Zhang was so amused that she pointed at the two of them and said to Jinhe, "They say girls are quiet, but I don't think so." Jinhe smiled and picked up the two young masters. "This servant also thinks what Madam said makes sense."
The master and servant were chatting and laughing when Cai Lian came in and bowed, saying, "Madam, my aunt said that the young master has a cough. I sent this servant to inform you and ask the doctor to come to the house." Zhang nodded and said, "Yes."
When Nanny Chang saw that the person had left, she couldn't help but nag, "Auntie, you're always calling the doctor every other day."
Zhang looked at her, and Nanny Chang stopped talking. "It's the season of change, so it's normal for children to have a headache or fever."
Then she looked towards the tree and said, "I used to think the third girl was too noisy. She took Hui Ge'er running and jumping all day long. Later I found that children are healthier if they move more." Nanny Chang seemed to be thinking about something. "What about Yao's..."
Zhang looked at her and suddenly smiled, "Madam, do you want to make a bet with me?"
