Spy Wars: I am the Captain of the Military Police

Chapter 818: Vow to Live and Die with Songjiang

Suddenly, there was a burst of gunfire on the battlefield. The Japanese soldiers in the front fell down like wheat being cut, but the enemies behind continued to advance by stepping on the corpses of their companions.

Japanese tanks bombarded the national army's positions, raising clouds of dust.

The position outside the west gate was once in a tight situation, and the Japanese army broke through a line of defense. Upon hearing the news, Wu Keren immediately led the guards to the west gate.

"General, it's too dangerous here!" The staff officer tried to stop him.

Wu Keren glared at him and said, "Wherever my soldiers are in danger, I should be there!" He then drew his pistol and said, "108th Division Special Forces Company, follow me!"

Wu Keren personally led his officers and soldiers to counterattack and finally drove back the Japanese troops at the west gate.

In the fierce battle, he took the lead and bullets flew past him several times, but he was not afraid.

"Commander, be careful!" A guard suddenly threw Wu Keren to the ground, and the next second, the place where they had just stood was swept by machine gun bullets.

Wu Keren pushed aside the guards and continued to direct the battle: "The third battalion will encircle the left wing, and the machine gun team will suppress that firepower point!"

Seeing the commander so brave, the soldiers' morale was boosted and they drove out the Japanese troops that had entered the city in one fell swoop.

In the afternoon, Japanese reinforcements arrived and launched another crazy all-out attack.

A fierce battle was raging outside the South Gate, with the 67th Army, the Security Team and the 40th Army fighting the enemy on all sides.

The Japanese army, relying on its artillery advantage and the morale of advancing victoriously after landing, launched a very fierce offensive.

When the battle was at its fiercest, Wu Keren moved his command post forward to a dilapidated temple only 500 meters away from the front line.

His staff officers urged him to retreat, but he firmly refused: "The closer the commander is to the front line, the more confident the soldiers will be."

As night fell, the sound of gunfire gradually became sparse, and the day's fierce fighting came to a temporary halt. The defenders used this rare breathing time to repair fortifications, transport ammunition, and rescue the wounded.

When Wu Keren inspected the positions, he saw tired but determined faces. Many soldiers insisted on fighting despite being injured. The medical team had long run out of bandages and could only use torn clothes to bandage the wounds.

"Commander, our army suffered more than 800 casualties today." The chief of staff reported sadly.

Wu Keren was silent for a moment: "What were the losses of the Japanese army?"

"It's estimated to be over a thousand people."

"It was worth it!" Wu Keren slammed his fist on the table. "Tell the brothers, we defended Songjiang today, and we must continue to defend it tomorrow!"

That night, Wu Keren sent a telegram to the Third War Zone Headquarters: "Our troops fought fiercely with the enemy all day, repelled several enemy attacks, and killed and wounded over a thousand enemies.

Our troops have suffered heavy casualties, but our morale is high. We will defend Songjiang to the death and complete the mission assigned by the Chairman."

The real fierce battle began on the 8th.

At 5 a.m., just as the sky was getting light, thousands of Japanese troops forced their way across the Huangpu River and engaged in a fierce battle with the defenders in Desheng Port and Shihudang Town.

After the previous day's battle, the defenders' strength had been greatly reduced.

The Japanese army changed its tactics and concentrated its superior forces to attack one point.

"Commander, the Deshenggang position is in danger! The Japanese army has crossed the Huangpu River. Our army has suffered heavy casualties. We request support!" The messenger, covered in blood and panting, reported.

Jin Kuibi, the commander of the 107th Division, said solemnly, "Order the 321st Regiment to dispatch a battalion to reinforce Desheng Port. Tell them that we must fight to the last man and not let the Japanese break through our defenses!"

When the reinforcements arrived at Desheng Port, most of the positions here had already been lost.

The Kuomintang soldiers engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the Japanese army, with blood drawn on the bayonets, and the scene was extremely brutal.

"Kill for our hometown in Northeast China!" A company commander from Northeast China shouted and led his soldiers to launch a counterattack.

They fought fiercely with the Japanese army, with flashes of swords and cries of killing shaking the sky.

At the same time, Songjiang City is also facing tremendous pressure.

Japanese artillery concentrated its fire on the city wall, creating gaps in many places. Japanese infantry, under the cover of tanks, poured into the city through the gaps.

"Order the division headquarters guard company to follow me!" Wu Keren once again personally went to the front line: "We must not let the enemy gain a foothold in the city!"

Street fighting broke out in the ancient city of Songjiang.

The two sides fought for house by house, and every street and every house became a battlefield.

Gunshots, explosions, shouts and screams resounded throughout this thousand-year-old city.

On a street west of the city, Nationalist soldiers formed a defensive line against buildings. A young soldier trembled with fear, and the veteran beside him patted him on the shoulder: "Don't be afraid, kid! Just treat these little devils like wild boars in the woods. We'll kill them one by one!"

As soon as he finished speaking, the old soldier was suddenly shot in the head and fell to the ground. The young soldier was stunned for a moment, then his eyes turned red and he fired frantically at the Japanese: "Give me back my squad leader's life!"

By noon, the Japanese army had approached Xiaonanmen and was less than a mile away from the command post.

Wu Keren sent out the last reserve force, the 319th Brigade, led by Brigade Commander Wu Qian, to launch a counterattack.

"Brothers, follow me and drive the Japs out of the city!" Brigade Commander Wu Qian took the lead, holding a submachine gun.

The soldiers rushed down the mountain like tigers, pushing the Japanese army back more than 200 meters in one fell swoop.

However, at this moment, a bullet hit Wu Qian in the abdomen. He staggered a few steps, but still insisted on commanding the battle until he fell unconscious and was carried away from the front line.

In the evening, the Japanese offensive slowed down slightly.

Wu Keren immediately inspected the positions to boost morale. Seeing the exhausted soldiers, many of whom were still fighting despite injuries, he could not help but burst into tears.

"Brothers, you are all great! We have been guarding for two days and two nights. If we hold on for one more day, we will complete the mission!" Wu Keren's voice was hoarse but firm.

That night, the Third War Zone Headquarters called: "Our troops in Songhu have begun to retreat. Your troops must hold on and hold on!"

Wu Keren replied: "The Ministry swears to live and die with Songjiang!"

. . . . . . .

Songhu front.

Under the constant supervision of the military police, the attack orders issued by the expeditionary force headquarters became increasingly severe.

The Japanese divisions received pressure and pushed the pressure down layer by layer.

Under such circumstances, the Japanese army launched the most ferocious attack since the war began, continuously charging and advancing towards the Chinese defenders' defense line without regard for the cost.

The battlefield was littered with corpses, both Japanese and Chinese. After battling to this point, both sides seemed to have transformed into wild beasts, with only the instinct to fight left.

"Sergeant, the Japs are coming again!" The voice of the new recruit Xiao Li was hoarse, the hand holding the gun was shaking slightly, and the sweat and blood in the palm of his hand were mixed together.

Squad leader Chen Tiezhu didn't look back, but skillfully loaded the last five bullets into the gun chamber: "What are you afraid of? We have died so many times, this time won't make a difference." His voice was surprisingly calm, as if he was talking about tomorrow's weather.

Three days ago, news came from the division headquarters that they were going to retreat. The brothers had already packed up their belongings, and some even started destroying documents.

Then the order changed, and they were to hold on and wait for help. Their superiors told them to show the foreigners in the concession. They re-reinforced their fortifications, divided the last rations into seven parts, and prepared to hold on for seven days.

Yesterday evening, the division commander personally went to the position and gave a speech: "Brothers, we are the nails nailed here. If the Japanese want to, they will have to step over our corpses!" The soldiers responded with red eyes and roared, tearing up letters from home, smashing pocket watches, and truly prepared to die here.

An eerie tranquility permeated the battlefield, and everyone had come to terms with their own fate.

But now... The messenger stumbled over on the ruins, his voice piercing the tragic and heroic spirit of his desperate struggle.

"Retreat! Full retreat! Order all troops to move west immediately!"

The news spread like wildfire, and the soldiers were first deadly silent, and then exploded.

"Retreat? You're telling me you want to retreat now?" An old soldier with a blood-soaked bandage on his face suddenly stood up and said, "My decision was made in vain!"

Chen Tiezhu grabbed the messenger by the collar: "Have you confirmed the order? Don't tell me this is fake news again!"

"This is straight from the regimental headquarters, absolutely true! The signature is from the theater commander!" The messenger gasped, "The Japs have already surrounded us. If we don't leave now, we'll all die here!"
