Chapter 48 Struggle of Interests

Now there are only Mrs. Xie, her eldest aunt and her second uncle left in the meeting room. Without the presence of people from other branches, their emotions are even more exposed.

The second uncle looked at his eldest sister and said sinisterly, "Madam, the Duke's Mansion is where you can realize your ambitions. You'd better not interfere in the affairs of the Xu Mansion. We have our own arrangements."

The eldest aunt showed no fear at all. She fanned herself leisurely with her round fan, glanced at her half-brother, and said, "Oh? What are your plans? Tell me about it. Do you plan to follow the ancestral rules and go back to the concubine family to share the profits next year, or do you plan to hand over the affairs to the legitimate heir of the Xu Mansion step by step from now on?"

Hearing the Duke's wife becoming more and more aggressive, the second uncle angrily threw his sleeves and said, "This is our Xu family's own business. We will discuss it behind closed doors. What does it have to do with you?"

The eldest aunt stopped fanning herself, glared at the second uncle, and said, "Of course it has something to do with me. You distributed dividends among the direct lineage and took away the dividends that should have belonged to our direct lineage."

"I have worked diligently and made great contributions in running the Xu family's business!" Second Uncle's eyes turned fierce.

"You have already received the corresponding remuneration! As a bastard, you have received a lot! You should have been contented - no, you should have been grateful!" The eldest aunt counterattacked very straightforwardly.

The identity of being a bastard is a pain that the strong-willed second uncle will never be able to erase. The words of the eldest aunt hit his soft spot, making the second uncle grit his teeth in hatred.

The eldest aunt and the second uncle stared at each other with murderous intent. For a moment, the meeting room was so quiet that one could hear a pin drop.

Mrs. Xie finally had the chance to interrupt, and she advised, "Sister, his second uncle, let's sit down and talk it over."

"I have nothing to say to her!" said the second uncle.

"There's nothing to say!" said the aunt.

The two of them said this at the same time in perfect tacit understanding, which made Mrs. Xie feel both amused and helpless. In fact, this pair of siblings are quite similar.

"Sister, his second uncle is indeed irreplaceable. Qu'er has an ear disease, and it is inconvenient for him to handle many business matters." Mrs. Xie explained to her aunt.

The eldest aunt refused to compromise and said, "I see that Qu'er handles the business accounts every day. He is smart and remembers the accounts of each shop clearly. He can talk about it clearly."

The second uncle snorted coldly and said with a hint of sarcasm: "Just knowing how to read the account book is not a big deal. There are many ways to run a store."

The eldest aunt also said coldly: "Some people are so ungrateful. If my poor brother hadn't passed away early and had little fun, it would never have been his turn to take credit!"

This remark mocked the illegitimate uncle, but it also hurt Mrs. Xie a little. She was originally supporting her forehead with her hands, frowning, looking helpless and having a headache. When she heard her aunt talking about her husband's death, the look in her eyes immediately dimmed.

The eldest aunt knew that she had said something wrong, so she stopped talking; the second uncle looked at the eldest aunt as if he was laughing at her; Mrs. Xie was silent for a while, and said, "Sister, his second uncle, I have something else to do, so I'll leave first." After that, she walked out of the meeting room, leaving Xu Qu's eldest aunt and second uncle there to continue glaring at each other tensely.

After Madam Xie left, Second Uncle raised his eyebrows and said mischievously, "Some people only know how to talk, but never think about hurting others."

The eldest aunt looked at Mrs. Xie's back, took a deep breath and said, "That's because she doesn't bother to hide her true intentions."

Then the eldest aunt turned to Xu Qu's second uncle and said, "I just listened carefully to the accounts of the various shopkeepers. The shops managed by your sister-in-law and Qu'er also made considerable profits. It can even be said that they are better than the shop you are in charge of."

Second Uncle didn't like being compared to others, so his expression became serious and he said, "That's because Yongshengfang is included in it."

The eldest aunt snorted and said, "What's the difference!"

The second uncle said solemnly, "Of course it's different. Yongshengfang is the eldest sister-in-law's dowry, and it's her private property. Now she is willing to add the profits to the Xu family's account, which shows her generosity. It's not impossible that she will give Yongshengfang as her daughter's dowry one day and let the fat piece of Yongshengfang fall into the hands of the Xie family again."

The eldest aunt looked disapproving and sneered, "How do you know it's passed into the Xie family's hands?"

Seeing her attitude, the second uncle was a little unhappy, and said in a hurried tone: "Doesn't the Xie family miss Yongshengfang, a piece of fat meat that is lost outside? Don't you know? The kid from the eldest sister-in-law's third brother's family has been running to the Xu Mansion in the name of having fun since he was a child. Who knows if he has other intentions? I think it is not impossible for the Xie family to take back Yongshengfang in the name of strengthening the relationship."

The eldest aunt laughed as if she had heard some great joke. Xu Qu's second uncle didn't know why. He was confused and angry. He hesitated and asked, "What are you laughing at?"

The eldest aunt stopped and looked at him coldly, and said, "Do you think everyone is like you, staring at the little dowry of the female relatives?"

"You..." Uncle was so angry that he couldn't speak.

The eldest aunt naturally didn't care whether he was angry or not, and said: "It is true that Yongshengfang is a piece of fat meat that the Xie family lost, but you have to know that Yongshengfang was originally just an ordinary shop. It used the relationship of our Xu family to become a supplier of imperial products. This is why it has its current status. Therefore, it is understandable to distribute dividends to the children of the Xu family."

At this point, the eldest aunt glanced at the second uncle, then looked aside and continued, "It is true that the older generation of the Xie family is full of talents, and it is also true that the family background is quite profound. But now the younger generation of the Xie family is obviously declining, how can they compare to our Xu family. Counting from the age of childhood, three generations ago, no matter which generation, there are many talented people. With the current status of the Xie family, it is definitely marrying up to marry a girl from our Xu family, and it is not something that a young boy like him can achieve with just a thought."

After saying that, the eldest aunt turned around and looked at the second uncle and laughed. The second uncle clearly felt that this was a hidden smile, which made him secretly uneasy. He felt a little guilty and a little puzzled, and asked with a trembling voice: "You, what are you laughing at again?"

The eldest aunt raised her head slightly, half-closed her eyes, and said with a bit of disdain: "The most important thing is, how could your sister-in-law marry her legitimate daughter to the illegitimate boy of the Xie family. If she didn't have a difference between legitimate and illegitimate children in her heart, she would not have made that choice back then!"

The last sentence of the eldest aunt was indeed a bit "heart-breaking", revealing the old wounds of Uncle Xu Qu. When Uncle Xu went to the Xie Mansion to ask for marriage, he was rejected, but his widower brother who accompanied him was favored and the marriage was successful, which really made the arrogant uncle lose face.

"You...you..." The second uncle was so angry that he ignored etiquette and pointed at the eldest aunt and said, "Why do you always pick on me?"

The eldest aunt spread her hands instead, with a relaxed but firm look, and said calmly with a bit of arrogance and condescension: "I am just telling the truth. The principle of this world is that there is order between the old and the young, and distinction between legitimate and illegitimate children. No one can break the rules, otherwise there will be chaos."

"You...you...humph!" Xu Qu's second uncle was so angry that he turned around and left.

The eldest aunt watched his departing back calmly. Although the fierce look in her eyes gradually faded, she still snorted coldly, turned around, and left the conference room with a proud step.
