I'm so tired of traveling all the time
Chapter 6: The Shabby House
I haven't taken a good look at the rocky beaches along the coast yet, and I wonder if there are any suitable caves on the cliffs over there.
But we can't put all our hopes there, we need a backup plan.
"Let's go to the woods and build a tree house to keep out the wind and rain."
Wen Liang first walked along the beach. The waves brought a lot of garbage from human society. Although he didn’t know where he was exactly, the garbage was really everywhere.
And on the rocky beach, Wen Liang discovered some large clumps of kelp and some asparagus floating in the shallow water.
Wen Liang has eaten these many times, so it is not difficult to recognize them.
While collecting whatever edible things I saw, I carefully looked at the cliffs above my head.
In addition to kelp and asparagus, Wen Liang also saw many fish and crabs, but because of the high tide, Wen Liang did not dare to risk going too far into the water.
We can only try our luck when the tide goes out. Now the only way to find food is to wait for the tide to go to the beach. I have been taken there several times by my colleagues before, but we just went there for fun. Although I do have some experience, it is definitely not much.
Wen Liang still can't tell east from west, south from north, and can only remember things by left, right, front and back.
The visibility was very good in the morning. I took a general look at the mudflats and cliffs on the right, but I didn't see any caves that could accommodate me.
More than an hour had passed and Wen Liang didn't dare to waste any more time.
He gave himself today's time and roughly arranged the tasks:
Spend half of the morning searching for caves and collecting useful items, including but not limited to food, firewood, marine "trash", etc.
The other half of the morning was reserved for those who had not found the cave, and would need to leave the beach and go into the woods to look for materials to build a shelter.
The afternoon was mainly spent on building the shelter and collecting firewood. The shelter didn't need to be perfect in size or function, but at least it could block the wind.
At the same time, they take advantage of the low tide to go to the sea and collect food.
At this time, no cave was found to shelter them, so they had to activate the backup plan and "build a house" by themselves.
Yesterday Wen Liang saw a palm tree and thought about the skills he learned in survival shows. He needed to collect a lot of large leaves that could be used to make a roof and walls. If they were tied tightly, although they would not be useful in storms, they could still be used to provide shelter from the wind and rain.
I did what I said. Although I feel sore muscles all over my body now, in this place, no one will do it for me if I don’t do it myself.
The axe in his hand chopped slowly but steadily, and Wen Liang had collected countless huge palm leaves.
Resting my sore arms, I "looked" at the palm leaves in the storage space. These were probably enough to build a huge house.
Of course, this is just a quantitative idea. The rope does not allow Wen Liang to build a shelter that is too large.
To build a shelter, you also need a "beam" and necessary pillars.
After Wen Liang had a good rest and drank a bottle of water, he walked into the woods.
After walking for a while, they finally found a not-so-thick coconut tree. Wen Liang wanted to cut it down to use as a beam for the house, so he swung an axe and hammer to start chiseling the tree.
The sound of "dong dong dong" rang out in the woods, dull but with a hint of the worldly air.
The woods were not silent. The leaves blown by the wind made rustling sounds, as if fine sand was rolling in one's heart. There were also unknown insects flying around, as if they were not disturbed by Wen Liang's arrival.
The thumping sound suddenly stopped, Wen Liang sat down on the ground, and the axe and hammer were thrown aside.
"Is this a coconut tree? It must be a cycad! It's too hard to cut down!"
The axe hammer was not big enough, the handle was not long enough, he could not swing it, and he could not use enough force. The small axe blade was not sharp enough, and Wen Liang had never chopped down a tree before, so he did not know any techniques...
After putting in so much effort, Wen Liang wanted to give up before he had even cut half of the tree.
At this moment, Wen Liang suddenly glanced at the ground in the woods and saw several fallen tree trunks.
Pulling aside the vines that were blocking the way, Wen Liang dragged out a tree trunk and found a large coconut tree that had been uprooted. The leaves were still on it, all very fresh, and it looked as if it had just been knocked down.
There are two dead tree trunks below. One looks like it has dried up completely, and the other looks like a long section that has been scraped off the tree, with a lot of things growing on its surface.
Wen Liang couldn't tell whether they were fungi or something like shell barnacles. They looked like they were about to be "eaten" to pieces.
"What good luck!"
Wen Liang put all these away, thinking that he had found shelter!
I was thinking about going back to build the house in one go, when I suddenly saw the vines on the ground and thought, isn’t this the best “rope”? !
There is only a limited amount of hemp rope in my hand, which is definitely not enough, but these vines are a good substitute, even more suitable than hemp rope!
The vines themselves are very strong. Wen Liang also encountered them when he was clearing the road yesterday. These fresh vines were very difficult to deal with and it took him a lot of effort.
This is even more true for dry ones. I felt this way when I was cleaning the tree trunks just now. They are as strong as rubber bands.
Not only could it not be torn apart by hand, even the blade of an axe could not cut it off!
After collecting a large pile of vines with great effort, Wen Liang dragged his tired body back to the beach.
It looks like the sun has passed directly overhead again, so let’s eat first.
Wen Liang was able to make a fire more easily the next time. This time he did not tear paper to start the fire because he found a very good fire starter - the bark of a dry tree!
To be more precise, it is the part inside the bark, the very fine fiber part, the very soft tree fluff, which is very easy to ignite.
After the fire was lit, Wen Liang took care of it carefully until the large tree trunk was lit. The big bonfire seemed very safe.
This time Wen Liang learned from last night's lesson and prepared enough firewood, placing many semi-dry branches and tree trunks around the campfire.
They were all picked up from the beach and the woods. A storm destroyed many big trees, and some were destroyed very completely, leaving only small pieces.
I put the instant noodle pot on the shelf, opened the coconut shell and boiled it, and had lunch with the strange-tasting pizza I got today.
Wen Liang didn’t notice anything strange. When you are hungry, everything tastes delicious!
After drinking the not-so-good-tasting coconut water, my stomach suddenly started to growl.
"Oh my god..."
Wen Liang stood up suddenly and rushed into the woods. After a lot of noise, he finally felt relieved.
"Oh, it seems that coconut milk can't be drunk as water!"
Rubbing his butt and returning to the beach, Wen Liang couldn't help but sigh, "If God gives me another chance, I will definitely bring a pack of toilet paper here!"
It’s nothing, the wooden stick really hurts my anus!
It was a while after noon and the tide had begun to recede. Wen Liang walked on the beach to catch some seafood, just as a way to digest his food after dinner.
What a great harvest! We actually found a long-legged octopus on the beach!
This is a good thing, the best when grilled on a teppanyaki plate, and the spicy stir-fry is also very flavorful. But given the current conditions, it’s no problem to cook it!
When he got down to the rocky beach, Wen Liang also found several large crabs with long legs, but without any tools, it was difficult to catch them in the water. He only caught one and his hand was almost pinched.
On the back of the reef, Wen Liang also found several large oysters, which he had to knock down with an axe and hammer.
Looking at the oysters that were almost as big as his palm, Wen Liang smiled. This is known as a gas station for men!
Half an hour later, Wen Liang returned to the beach and prepared to build a hut.
I first selected two coconut trees at the border of the beach and the woods. They were close to each other, only about three meters apart.
Use vines to tie a loose circle around each tree, then take out the tree trunks and clean them up with an axe and hammer to make the "beams" look smoother.
The beams of the house are passed through the vines tied to the trees and then tied tightly with dry vines, and the beams are ready.
Take out the palm leaves and use the axe to chop the straw. Only the upper half is enough, and the chopped straw can be used to make fire. It's the best of both worlds!
After arranging enough palm leaves and placing them on two slender branches, Wen Liang tied the palm leaves to the branches with vines as thin as thumbs.
After tying it up, it looks like a wall of leaves. Although it is not very strong, it should be able to block out light wind and rain.
After making two more leaf walls, the sky gradually darkened and Wen Liang's hands were already slightly blistered.
Make the bonfire bigger, and while there is still light, quickly put the two leaf walls on the beams and secure them with vines.
The two back walls are covered with two layers of palm leaves, which can effectively block the sea breeze, and the front wall can be used as a movable door.
When the moon rose, a small, crude shelter appeared!
Looking at the "house" that was built from scratch, Wen Liang was extremely satisfied. This was the first time he built it, and he didn't expect it to be successful in one go!
Although we haven’t experienced the test of wind and rain yet, at least we don’t have to blow the sea breeze tonight!
"Cook and rest!"
