Chapter 581 Zheng Qiang is a little anxious
Zheng Qiang sat down in a chair across from He Feng, his hands clasped together on the documents on his desk, his fingertips unconsciously rubbing over them, as if trying to soothe his inner anxiety. Last night, on his way back to the dorm, he'd vaguely sensed someone following him. Though he'd managed to escape by turning a few alleyways, the feeling of being watched still lingered in his mind. He knew his plan against Scar couldn't be delayed any longer; he had to act quickly, lest someone discover his true intentions and ruin his plans.
So he looked up at He Feng, his tone carrying a hint of deliberately constructed urgency: "Director, haven't we ordered the surveillance of Scar for too long? I think it's almost time to end it. Those guys are as cunning as monkeys. If we keep wasting time, they might notice something is amiss. Then it will be difficult to close the net. I'm afraid we'll alert the enemy."
Zheng Qiang's calculations were churning in his mind: if he could quickly end the surveillance, he could use the pretext of a "close-up operation" to lure the obstructing investigation team members to his pre-determined warehouse—where the trap had already been set. Then, he could catch them all in one fell swoop, then follow the clues to find the reactionary leaders connected to Scar and eliminate them all in one fell swoop. This way, he could eliminate the eyes that were watching him and achieve great success at the same time—the best of both worlds, and no one could find fault with him.
As He Feng listened to him, his suspicions surged like a tide. Zheng Qiang's recent concern for Scar's case was truly excessive. He used to always say, "Follow the procedures, there's no need to rush." Now, with his anxious expression, there was something inexplicably wrong, as if he was being pushed to complete some task. He couldn't help but wonder: Could there really be something wrong with Zheng Qiang? But then he thought, Zheng Qiang had helped him with several difficult cases before, even taking a bullet from behind once. He couldn't believe he was the traitor.
The office fell silent for a moment, the only sound being the wall clock's ticking. Every tick felt like a resounding blow on someone's heart. He Feng looked at Zheng Qiang, not responding for a moment. The balance in his heart swung back and forth between trust and suspicion, like a weight suspended in mid-air, unable to settle.
After a long while, He Feng slowly spoke: "Director Zheng, now is not the best time to take action. Wait a little longer. After all, this matter has been handed over to Captain Zhang Shizhang, and he is still collecting the final evidence."
Zheng Qiang leaned forward, his tone becoming more urgent. "Chief, I'm not pushing you, but we really need to act quickly. Scar's gang are armed with heavy weapons. If they get wind of this and run away, it'll be hard to catch them. We'll be in big trouble then."
He Feng looked at him calmly, "Of course I have a plan. Once Zhang Shi comes to report the latest progress and confirms that all the clues are connected, we will take action to ensure that nothing goes wrong."
Seeing his resolute attitude, Zheng Qiang knew that it was useless to persuade him any further, so he could only nod and say, "Director, I understand."
After saying this, he stood up and said goodbye, cursing inwardly—if he dragged it out any longer, if Zhang Shi really found out something, his plan would be ruined. He hurried out of the office, fearing that staying even a second longer would reveal a flaw.
He Feng sat behind his desk, his brows still furrowed. Zheng Qiang had just left the office building when he ran into Zhang Shi, who had hurried over. With a sudden thought, he immediately stepped forward, a concerned smile plastered on his face. "Captain Zhang, nice to see you. I wonder how your investigation is going? Have you figured out the details of Scar's gang?"
Zheng Qiang felt like he had a red-hot iron in his heart. Although he remained calm on the surface, he kept glancing at Zhang Shi from the corner of his eye - what he wanted to know most was whether this kid recognized that the person outside the warehouse that night was him.
Zhang Shi watched Zheng Qiang walk away, his brow furrowed even deeper, his suspicions growing like vines. Seeing Zheng Qiang turn around, he immediately calmed down and gave a formal smile, "Director Zheng, I've been investigating a lot of leads these past couple of days and I'm preparing to compile a detailed report for you."
Zheng Qiang stopped, his gaze lingering on his face for a moment, his tone unclear: "Captain Zhang, I saw you staring at me in a trance just now. What were you thinking about?"
Zhang Shi smiled and waved his hands, his tone relaxed: "Director Zheng, you're joking. It's nothing serious. I just went over the details of the case in my mind and got a little distracted."
Zheng Qiang hummed, didn't ask any more questions, and turned back to his office. The moment the door closed, he leaned against it and breathed a long sigh of relief, but cold sweat had already seeped into his palms.
Zhang Shi then went to He Feng's office, briefly reporting on some insignificant details before leaving in a hurry. He knew that the Public Security Bureau was currently rife with undercurrents, and it was unclear who the spies were, so he couldn't say anything unnecessary.
He Feng sat at his desk, his fingertips tapping gently on the surface. Not long after, the phone rang. He picked up, listened for a few words, and when he hung up, his eyes lit up with a newfound determination. The plan was set; the action would take place tomorrow morning. He would then deliberately tell Zheng Qiang that it would be at noon. If Zheng Qiang tipped him off, he could expose his true intentions on the spot. If nothing happened, the mission would still be accomplished, killing two birds with one stone.
He Feng didn't say anything more, but Zheng Qiang couldn't sit still any longer. He looked at his watch every few minutes, his heart feeling like ants were crawling. He kept thinking about Zhang Shi's expression just now, and couldn't guess how much evidence the other party had.
He Feng knew that the manpower deployed for this operation was sufficient and no additional support was needed, so he stood up and called Zhang Shi, who was about to leave: "Captain Zhang, it's early morning."
With just two words, Zhang Shi instantly understood—the director was trying to test Zheng Qiang. He nodded heavily, and as he turned and left, his steps became more steady.
He Feng then looked at Zhao Lei standing beside him and said, "Go and notify all the team leaders to come to the conference room for a meeting."
Zhao Lei understood and quickly went out to pass on the order. A moment later, the conference room was full of people, including Ma Xin, who was waiting solemnly for instructions.
He Feng glanced at the crowd and said in a deep voice, "Everyone should be at work early tomorrow morning. There will be an operation this afternoon. Captain Zhang."
Zhang Shi immediately stood up and announced, "Our team will serve as the vanguard for this operation, and you will provide support from the flanks." He paused, looked at He Feng, and said firmly, "Don't worry, Director. You can just lead your men to clean up the battlefield. We'll take care of the vanguard work."
He Feng nodded, his eyes filled with trust. "I believe in your abilities. You can take your weapons and equipment today. Please be sure to pay attention to safety during your actions and don't underestimate the enemy."
Zhang Shi replied, "Yes," without further ado. After the meeting, he returned to his office, his desk piled high with case materials. But he knew his most important task was to keep a close eye on Zheng Qiang's every move—the slightest sign of movement would escape his notice.
