Chapter 279 The Orcs' Desire to Survive
Bolt was slightly stunned when he heard what Merlin said. He had never heard of the word supermarket. "I'm sorry, I've never heard of a supermarket... What kind of job is this?"
"Excuse me, to put it simply, it's a place where goods are sold, just like your shop that sells daily necessities and food." Merlin smiled and continued, "Your job is to sell goods for me, organize the shelves, and entertain customers."
Is it a job in a shop? Bolt's eyes lit up, and the other orcs looked at each other.
"I think we can do this job." Bolt said firmly.
"Very good, but I have a few questions for you."
Bolt nodded. "You go ahead."
“If I open a supermarket in downtown, will it be stolen? How can I avoid this from happening?”
Merlin held up a finger to pose his question.
The word "stealing" is almost a word associated with orcs. If a person or other race walks in the lower area of the Arcane City and loses something, just curse the orcs, because this is definitely what they did.
Almost half of the Thieves Guild in the Lower Town are Orcs.
"In the lower city, theft is a very normal thing. Stores lose several or even dozens of gold coins worth of goods almost every month. It's a common occurrence and almost impossible to prevent." Bolt knew a lot about this matter.
Merlin looked at Laken, who nodded. "Yes, Boss. It's normal for shops to lose things in the lower district. No one will care if things are lost. After all, there is no special security agency in the Arcane City, and the lower district is full of gangs and unions. It's too difficult to arrest people here."
"So, this is an unavoidable problem?" Merlin turned and looked at Bolt.
Bolt clenched his hands. He knew that the survival rules of the lower class were wrong and deformed. He tried to change them, but there was no way. In the final analysis, it was just a lack of money.
If there are jobs, orcs are unwilling to steal to survive. When a race can only survive by stealing, the so-called pursuit of dignity is nothing but a joke.
"Bolt, I'm going to open a large chain supermarket. I'll need lots of employees and there will be a lot of merchandise. According to your calculations, an ordinary shop will lose a few or a dozen gold coins a month. Then my shop may lose hundreds or thousands of gold coins a month. I will never allow that." Merlin said lightly.
When Bolt heard Merlin say this, he raised his head and asked, "Boss, how big a supermarket do you plan to open? How many employees do you need?"
"You know the central square in the downtown area, right? I bought all the shops on that street. I plan to open a large shopping mall there, which will have not only a supermarket but also other businesses. As for how many people are needed, the more the better. Hundreds of people? Thousands of people? Believe me, I am definitely not making empty promises for you." Merlin laughed.
Can it provide hundreds or thousands of jobs? Bolt instantly became excited. He thought for a moment and gritted his teeth, "Okay, if you can really provide so many jobs, then I promise that your supermarket will never lose a single gold coin."
The orcs around looked at Bolt in shock. One of the cat girls said, "You are crazy, this is impossible! With such a large area of shops, those guys will definitely go crazy. They will be watching there all the time!"
"Very good, Bolt, I believe you won't lie to me." Merlin snapped his fingers, which confused Alex and Laken. No, you just believe the other person?
You should know that there is a Thieves Guild stationed in the downtown area, and these guild members love to steal things from shops.
"Bolt, I can see your determination. I don't ask my supermarket not to lose anything at the beginning. I hope you can control it within an acceptable range for me."
Merlin had already investigated the thefts in the shops in the lower town. Although a few gold coins - or goods worth more than a dozen gold coins - were lost every month, in fact, the price of those goods was not worth that much at all. The actual value might be just a few silver coins. The residents of the lower town had always been the exploited party, and the things sold were ridiculously expensive.
"Okay, let's not dwell on this issue any more. Let's talk about the most important thing first. Bolt, how much does a job in downtown pay per month?"
"Wages? Every month?" Bolt was a little surprised.
"Did I say something wrong?" Merlin was a little puzzled.
"Aren't wages paid annually? Only after completing a year's work will you be paid..." Bolt asked curiously.
What the hell? That's too much? Merlin was shocked. "Paid annually? How much can the salary in the lower city be in a year?"
Bolt thought for a moment and said, "I think there are about sixty gold coins..."
"Sixty gold coins a year? Are you kidding? Are you sure this money is enough?" Merlin felt that he had exploited himself enough, but he still underestimated the merchants in the other world.
"This is the salary in the downtown area. So what if it's not enough to spend? As long as I have a job I'm satisfied. If I meet a kind boss, they can even provide a meal, which can save one person's food ration for the family." Bolt said helplessly.
Merlin nodded, patted his butt and stood up. "I roughly understand. My salary here is paid monthly. I can give you a minimum base salary of 18 gold coins a month, which does not include full attendance, performance and bonuses. With such conditions, how many employees can you bring to me, Bolt?"
Bolt had never heard of or understood the terms such as full attendance, performance, and bonus, but he clearly heard the so-called salary of eighteen gold coins a month!
One month! Eighteen! Really? Not to mention Bolt, none of the orcs present believed that such a good thing that fell from the sky would fall on their heads.
As soon as Merlin said this, the whole yard fell silent, but the orcs' rapid breathing could be heard. Eighteen gold coins a month, what did this mean? It meant that this one person's work could support the whole family!
"If there is really so much money, I can provide as many employees as you want!" Bolt's heart was burning with excitement, and he wished he could immediately agree on behalf of his good brothers.
"Very good, but you have to remember, I want serious employees, not some street thugs!" Merlin stared at Bolt seriously.
Bolt patted his chest with his rough bear paw and assured, "Don't worry!"
