Quick Wear: Cousin, Come to the Bowl Quickly
Chapter 639 Personal Side Story: Chi Xianqiu's Story (2)
The students turned around in alarm.
At the end of the street, a makeshift roadblock had been erected, and a group of fully armed police officers stood there as if facing a formidable enemy, each holding a baton and looking menacing.
The leader was a middle-aged policeman with a burly face and fierce eyes. He put one hand on his hip and waved the other impatiently in the air, speaking sternly to the crowd.
"Who gave you permission to come here! You're causing trouble, disturbing the peace, trying to rebel? Disperse! All of you, disperse! Get back to school right now! Otherwise, don't blame me for being impolite!"
His shout startled the marching crowd, who paused for a moment before stopping in their tracks.
But in no time, the male student leading the way quickly reacted, stepped forward, and shouted loudly without any fear, his neck stiff.
“We did not cause trouble! The rise and fall of the nation is the responsibility of every citizen! The Japanese invaders have gone too far, and the authorities are weak and compromising. We are merely expressing the wishes of a Chinese citizen and awakening our apathetic compatriots! What crime have we committed?”
"Bullshit!" The police captain roared in fury. "What business is it of yours, you immature brats? The higher-ups will make the decision! Stop spreading these lies!"
As he spoke, he brandished his baton and shouted threateningly, "Scatter now! Or don't blame me for using this weapon indiscriminately!"
Upon hearing this, the police officers behind him immediately raised their batons in unison, and several even raised their guns, the dark muzzles pointing directly at the crowd.
The air solidified instantly.
Upon seeing what the policeman was holding, the students turned pale and their eyes widened in fear. They all took a half-step back in unison, causing a disturbance throughout the room.
But in a short while, anger and humiliation quickly replaced fear. Instead of backing down, several hot-blooded students pushed forward a few steps with red eyes and asked sharply.
"You are Chinese police! Instead of fighting the Japanese invaders, you point guns at your own compatriots?"
"If you've got the guts, fire at the Japanese pirates!"
"Why can't we speak?!"
Seeing that they were advancing instead of retreating, the police captain became even angrier and started glaring and cursing.
The marching crowd consisted mostly of students in their prime, who, upon hearing his angry outburst, were also enraged. They pressed heavily towards the police, pushing and shoving, shouting and hurling insults, and a conflict was imminent.
"Rebellion! Rebellion! Beat them! Arrest all these arrogant and ignorant scoundrels!" The police captain roared in exasperation as the situation spiraled out of control.
Immediately afterward, while waving his baton to try to drive away the approaching students, he yelled at a young policeman beside him, "Quick! Go back and get more people! Get more people here! We're going to arrest all these troublemakers today!"
Upon hearing his words, the students at the front lunged forward to snatch the baton from his hand, but the police captain showed no mercy and immediately raised his hand to strike the nearest student with the baton.
After a scream, the scene completely spiraled out of control. Curses, screams, and the dull thuds of batons striking flesh mingled with the sounds of objects being overturned and shattering. Police officers and students grappled together, and people kept falling to the ground.
In the chaos, someone pulled the trigger in a panic.
"boom!"
A boy who was rushing ahead suddenly shuddered, staggered back two steps, and a patch of glaring dark red blood quickly spread across his chest. He looked down in disbelief, then collapsed limply, and blood soon meandered beneath him.
"Murder! The police are killing people!"
Anguish and screams erupted instantly. The sight of blood jolted everyone. Some people retreated in panic, but many more students, their eyes bloodshot, rushed toward the police officers without regard for their own safety.
The police captain had only intended to teach these arrogant students a lesson, but he never expected that it would actually result in a death. He looked around in a panic, trying to find out who had fired the shot.
But amidst the chaos, he could see nothing but the students' bloodshot eyes and the bodies that kept falling.
Distracted, his baton was knocked from his hand, and several students pounced on him like mad tigers. In a moment of desperation, a fierce glint flashed in his eyes, and he suddenly drew his sidearm from his waist. The muzzle trembled as he pointed it at a young student who had rushed in front of him, his face contorted with rage...
At the critical moment.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
Three exceptionally clear gunshots suddenly rang out right above everyone's heads!
The gunshot was too close, too loud, and too sudden, carrying a strong sense of oppression that instantly drowned out all the noise in the arena.
Both the students, their eyes red with rage, and the police officers, their faces contorted with rage, abruptly stopped what they were doing and looked in the direction of the sound with suspicion and uncertainty.
On the street, a few people were already standing quietly in front of a café with a French sign and elegant decor.
The leader was a very beautiful young woman, about twenty years old, wearing a pearl white georgette dress, with her long hair loosely tied back at the neck with a matching hairband, and a white mesh sun hat on her head.
Summer sunlight filtered through the gaps in the sycamore leaves, casting dappled patterns of light on her, making her stand out starkly against the surrounding hot and chaotic street scene.
Standing beside her were two other ladies, equally well-dressed, with furrowed brows and expressions of lingering shock.
Behind them stood three or four tall, burly men dressed in black casual clothes, with cold and stern expressions.
One of them had his arm raised, holding a gleaming pistol with the muzzle pointing upwards, and wisps of smoke still visible.
Those three gunshots that just rang out, which shocked the entire audience, were clearly fired by him.
"In broad daylight, on a busy street, the police are shooting at students. They really have guts." In the dead silence, a somewhat cold and sharp voice cut through the noise and clearly reached everyone's ears.
The woman in the pearl-white dress spoke; her voice wasn't loud, but the chill in her words was almost impossible to conceal.
After she finished speaking, her gaze swept over the student who had just been shot and was lying motionless in a pool of blood. Her brows furrowed, and she turned her head to whisper an instruction to a bodyguard behind her.
The bodyguard nodded expressionlessly, raised his gun, and strode towards the chaotic crowd. People looked at him with some apprehension, but unconsciously parted to make way for him because of the gun in his hand.
An injured girl was trying to help a boy who was lying motionless on the ground, but because she was also injured, she had difficulty moving and failed after a long time.
The bodyguard walked straight up to her, said nothing, put away his gun, gestured for her to let go, then crouched down and probed the boy's neck and wrists.
Just a few seconds later, he looked up and shook his head slightly at the girl.
Upon seeing this, the injured girl's eyes immediately reddened, but she bit her lip tightly to keep herself from crying out loud.
The bodyguard muttered an apology, then picked up the lifeless young body from the ground and handed it to several tearful, grief-stricken boys nearby before returning to the woman in the dress.
Upon seeing this, the woman's already cold expression darkened further. Her gaze slowly swept over the students on the long street, who had large and small wounds, tear-streaked faces, and indignant eyes. Finally, it suddenly landed on the group of police officers with different expressions.
"Who fired the shot just now?" she asked in a low, cold voice.
Although the police officers did not know her specific identity, judging from her overall demeanor and the several clearly well-trained bodyguards behind her, it was obvious that she was no ordinary person. Therefore, they were all intimidated by her aura and no one dared to respond.
"It was him! He was the one who fired the shot!"
Suddenly, a boy with a flushed face and eyes that seemed to be spitting fire pointed sharply at a thin, pale-faced young policeman in the police formation who was quietly shrinking back.
The woman's gaze sharpened, and she said coldly to the bodyguard, "Bring him here."
The skinny policeman's pistol had already been knocked away by the angry students in the chaos. Hearing this, he screamed like a cat whose tail had been stepped on and desperately hid behind his colleague.
"How dare you! Who are you? The police are handling this, what right do you have to interfere..." The police captain finally recovered from his initial shock and shouted a few words, trying to regain control of the situation and save face.
Before he could finish speaking, the young lady in the pale yellow cheongsam standing next to the woman in the white dress spoke up with a cold laugh.
"Open your dog eyes and look carefully! This is the daughter of Commander Lin, the wife of Chief of Staff Shen, Madam Lin Xi!"
The moment the words "Mrs. Lin" were uttered, they struck the police captain like a thunderbolt.
Although he had never seen Madam Lin's true face, every person of any standing in Shanghai knew that Commander Lin, who controlled the defense of the entire city and its surrounding areas, doted on his only daughter and treated her like a precious treasure.
Chief of Staff Shen, who rose to a high position at a young age, was known for his deep love for his wife.
This Mrs. Lin is a figure of absolute authority in Shanghai's top circles; her mere presence can shake the ground. If you offend her, let alone a lowly team leader like myself, even their bureau chief would have to be extremely cautious.
Thinking of this, the fierce look on the police captain's face instantly disappeared, and cold sweat poured out of his forehead.
His legs went weak and he could barely stand. He quickly put on an extremely obsequious smile, bowing and scraping, his voice even changing tone.
"Oh, it's Madam Lin! I was blind and offended you, Madam. I deserve to die!"
As he spoke, he glared fiercely at the skinny policeman who was hiding, then rushed into the crowd, roughly pulled the man out, and shoved him in front of him, his movements so swift that it was as if he were discarding a hot potato.
"Madam, please understand! It was truly not my order to fire! Our superiors only instructed us to maintain order and disperse the crowd. Who would have thought that this fool, in his haste, would accidentally fire and cause such a commotion... The real culprit is right here, right here! I'll leave it to you, Madam, to decide your fate!"
The thin policeman was pushed a few steps away from Lin Xi. He staggered to his feet, his face full of panic and his eyes darting around, yet he still managed a low, unwilling protest: "I... I was just following orders to suppress the riots..."
"Riot?" Lin Xi interrupted him, her voice unusually cold. "Where did this riot come from? The student demonstration was to speak out for the country and to awaken the people's wisdom. What chaos is there?"
As she spoke, she took a small half-step forward, her gaze beneath the veil sharp as a knife, as if trying to dissect the person's skin and see what lay within.
"You have a gun, yet you shoot at your unarmed compatriots who are loyal to their country, instead of the enemies eyeing the city from outside?"
At this point, her voice suddenly turned sharp, "Or are you saying—you're not one of our compatriots at all?"
Upon hearing this, the policeman's pupils contracted sharply, a fleeting look of panic crossing his face, but he quickly regained his composure and raised his voice, "I...I am of course Chinese! I just...I was just...following orders when I fired the shot!"
Seeing the situation was turning sour and fearing he would be implicated, the police captain slapped the officer across the face, cursing, "Whose orders do you take? I only give orders to you..."
"boom!"
A gunshot rang out, without warning, swift and decisive.
The police captain's angry outburst came to an abrupt halt as he felt a burning sensation on his eyelids, and a few warm drops of liquid splashed up.
He instinctively closed his eyes, and the next moment, he heard a dull thud as something heavy fell to the ground. He began to tremble violently, his teeth grinding together.
"This person was a Japanese spy who infiltrated the police force to deliberately incite infighting and create chaos. He has now been executed."
A cold, steady female voice rang out, clearly echoing through the silent street.
