Parental Love: Jiang Weimin's Life of Lying Down
Chapter 12 Catch the sea
Today is Sunday. Jiang Weimin got up early, washed up, and sat at the table to enjoy breakfast.
While he was eating the delicious food, he noticed that his aunt Jiang Dehua was carrying a basket and preparing to go out.
"Aunt, what are you going to do?"
Jiang Dehua smiled and replied, "I want to go fishing with your Aunt Zhang. Today is low tide."
Hearing this, Jiang Weimin immediately became excited, with excitement flashing in his eyes.
He quickly put down his bowl and chopsticks. "Aunt, wait a minute, I want to go with you too."
"Okay, if you want to go, go get the tools!"
Jiang Weimin has been in this world for more than half a year. During this period, he has gone to the sea many times and enjoyed it very much.
He quickly ran into the house to pick up his tools, eager to go fishing.
It’s summer, and this season is the best time to enjoy shellfish and sea urchins.
So when summer comes, the beach is always crowded with people bending over and busy digging for clams and razor clams, hoping to harvest a lot of seafood and bring it home to share this delicious feast with their families.
In the 70s, the beaches were full of various small seafood, but local residents at the time did not consider them as food.
For example, the sea anemones that are now common in seafood markets were called "sea butt roots" by us back then. If anyone wanted to eat this, they would definitely become a laughing stock!
There is also a small seafood called false abalone, which now sells for more than 20 yuan per catty, but at that time it was called "old lady's heel" because it was dirty and sticky, so no one was willing to eat it.
In addition, starfish are also a headache for anglers because they will steal bait and are therefore very unwelcome.
However, we were all surprised when we found out that starfish could be sold as tourist souvenirs.
They actually used something that can be seen everywhere on the beach to deceive foreign tourists. It's really unscrupulous! What's even more unexpected is that now starfish have begun to have commercial value.
Back in the past, seafood such as mantis shrimp, sea urchins and peeling fish were not as popular as they are now, and almost no one cared about them.
Especially sea urchins and mantis shrimps, after being caught by the seaside fishermen at that time, they would often smash them into pieces and throw them into the manure pond for composting. As for skinned fish, even if the price was only a few cents per pound, people did not like to eat it.
In fact, seafood has a remarkable feature, that is, most types are rich in protein and low in fat. This feature makes seafood not occupy too much stomach space after eating, and it is difficult to feel full.
However, in that era, people generally lacked fat intake, so they were naturally not interested in such food that did not satisfy hunger. Therefore, it is not surprising that seafood was not popular in the environment at that time.
At dawn, the sky gradually turned pale, and the sun had not yet risen completely, but it had already brought a hint of warmth and hope. At this time, the beach was filled with a fresh breath, as if nature had bestowed the purest and most beautiful gift on this land.
Zhang Guiying looked at the two baskets in Jiang Weimin's hands and reminded him with a smile: "Weimin, don't just pick up useless things like you did last time when you went to the beach to fish."
"I know, Aunt Zhang! Don't worry, I brought two baskets this time." He patted the basket in his hand confidently, indicating that he was fully prepared.
The "useless things" Zhang Guiying mentioned are not really useless, but some precious ingredients that are difficult for modern people to taste, such as sea cucumbers and seahorses. These seafoods are rare good things for Jiang Weimin, but for people who have been at the seaside for a long time, they are just like stones on the roadside.
"Aunt Zhang, look, this basket is for the 'useless' things, and the other basket is reserved for other good things. This way I can satisfy my little hobby and ensure that I don't return empty-handed."
Zhang Guiying couldn't help laughing after hearing this: "You are such an interesting kid. But you still have to be careful and don't get washed away by the sea water."
Jiang Weimin knew Zhang Guiying's passionate personality very well, and Zhang Guiying was very grateful for his care and love for Jiang Weimin.
Near noon, Jiang Weimin returned with a full basket of oysters and clams, all of which were quite large.
Another basket was filled with sea urchins, sea intestines, sea cucumbers, and a dozen seahorses were also carefully placed in cans by Jiang Weimin.
This time we went out to sea and had a rich harvest. In modern society, a sea urchin would cost about 30 yuan, and sea cucumbers would cost as much as 100 yuan per pound. The seafood in our hands would probably be worth thousands of yuan. It was really a profit!
Especially those sea cucumbers which were as big as 20 centimeters. It is hard to find such big ones in today’s society, but no one wanted them on the beach. It was a wonderful time!
Sea cucumber is a precious nourishing food, rich in amino acids, vitamins, active substances and trace elements, and is known as the "first of a hundred supplements."
Eating sea cucumbers can nourish the kidneys and strengthen the essence, nourish the blood and moisten dryness, prevent cardiovascular diseases, improve immunity, etc. Chinese football players eat them every meal.
Seahorse is also a precious Chinese medicinal material, named because its head is similar to a horse. This Chinese medicinal material has a good tonic effect and is called southern ginseng.
Its main function is to nourish the kidney and strengthen yang, and it is usually drunk with wine. Seahorse is rich in nutrients such as protein and amino acids. Taking it in moderation can also delay aging and prevent cancer.
In short, this harvest not only made Jiang Weimin happy, but also made him full of satisfaction with his current life.
Jiang Weimin packed up and walked home. He saw his aunt still digging for food: "Aunt, my basket is full. I'm going home first."
"Weimin, how could you pick up so many sea cucumbers? These sea cucumbers are too hard when cooked and not tasty at all. We don't want that crap! Who would eat it?"
"I eat it. I can eat it when I cook porridge. The book says it is a good thing and only big leaders eat it."
"Who would believe that a big leader would eat something so disgusting?" Jiang Dehua's face was full of disbelief.
"Aunt, don't worry about me. My basket is full. I'm going back first."
"Okay, you go back first! I'll wait for your Aunt Zhang."
"Then I'll be leaving." Jiang Weimin said as he picked up two baskets of seafood and walked home.
