Ni Yangzhou and Meng Ting did not return home.
Instead, they all returned to the community tacitly.
In the morning, the only people who can still stroll around the community are retired grandparents.
An old lady with bound feet was pushing a walker on the driveway at the gate. There were three bags of oranges hanging on the cart. The cement road was not very flat, and the old lady had a hard time walking.
"Go help that grandma."
The little paper man urged in my pocket.
Without Ni Yangzhou's urging, Meng Ting had already reached out and helped the old man hold the walker steady.
"I'll help you."
"Hey! Good!"
"You are……"
When he turned around, Ni Yangzhou saw the face and realized it was Grandma Li who lived opposite him.
Grandma Li is 68 years old this year. She suffered a serious illness in her early years and has not recovered very well, but she can still take care of herself. She has been living on her own since her husband passed away.
No matter how many times his children tried to persuade him to leave, he was unwilling to leave, saying that the old man died here and if he moved, the ghost would not be able to find the place.
He was old and his eyesight wasn't very good. He looked closely for a long time before he asked:
"Isn't it Xiao Ni?"
Ni Yangzhou felt a little sad.
At least Meng Ting didn't say it directly in front of the old man.
"I'm Ni Yangzhou's classmate. I'm here to help him get his things. He's moving."
"Oh, oh oh..." The old man sighed repeatedly:
"Yes, I think I saw you before, walking with Xiao Ni."
Meng Ting nodded: "Yes, we are often together."
Ni Yangzhou looked up at the boy's expression and didn't dare to move.
"Xiao Ni has also moved. This guy looks so handsome when he smiles. I always met him before..."
My elderly grandmother has long been accustomed to the people around her getting sick, dying, or disappearing from this world, but she still feels a sense of loss every time they part.
"Last time, the kid forgot to bring his keys, so he had a meal at my place. He had a good appetite! The way he ate, he was blessed."
Grandma Li was recalling the original owner, and Ni Yangzhou had a clearer picture of the original owner in his mind.
Meng Ting did not respond, but helped Grandma Li carry the oranges in her hands so that the old woman could hold the cart steadily.
She walked all the way to the fourth floor, having to rest every two or three steps. Grandma Li was panting heavily, and her chest was wheezing like a bellows.
"This, this is Xiao Ni's classmate," Grandma Li said after she calmed down a little.
"You came here at noon, come and have a meal with grandma! You helped me carry oranges and sent me back!"
Meng Ting wanted to refuse, but the little paper man on his chest kept knocking on his chest.
The words "No thanks" came to my lips, but they were changed to "Okay, thank you."
The old man unlocked the door tremblingly and talked about Ni Yangzhou's dangerous behavior of never bringing keys with him and hiding the keys under a flower pot.
Meng Ting lowered his eyes, and Ni Yangzhou in his pocket laughed dryly, touching the boy's chest soothingly.
The two-bedroom, one-living room apartment was tidy. Meng Ting went in to help her grandmother put the oranges away. Grandma Li very fashionably took out the soda prepared for her grandchildren from the refrigerator, handed it to Meng Ting, and went into the kitchen to serve the dishes.
I prepared the casserole stew before I went out, so I could eat it when I got back just by letting it dry.
Meng Ting looked around the living room and saw the balcony with closed windows.
The old man has maintained the habit of frugality throughout his life. There are many empty plastic bottles and cardboard boxes piled on the balcony, all neatly tied together.
It’s not a small number, so the balcony is almost like a storage room and there’s not much room for people to step on.
"Come on, grab the chopsticks, let's eat!"
Grandma Li loves to be lively. She feels happy when she sees the young man. She brings up a big pot of warm stew, which smells delicious.
"I originally wanted to make more and eat more for a few days. It's just right that you're here. Let's do it together!"
Ni Yangzhou looked at the vegetables in his pocket and started to feel greedy again.
Meng Ting politely handed Grandma Li the chopsticks and bowl, and scooped out a small portion for himself.
There were only two people in the room, and the small dining table could see everything at a glance. Meng Ting had no chance to light incense to offer to the souls, so Ni Yangzhou could only watch helplessly as the boy ate the first tasty meal in several days.
Grandma Li was not in a hurry to eat. She watched Meng Ting pick up her chopsticks and put the food into her mouth one bite at a time, saying happily:
"You are young and strong, eat more. When I was young, I could eat five bowls of noodles in one meal. You are the same as Xiao Ni, you look like you have a good appetite!"
The old man chattered while Meng Ting ate quietly, occasionally responding with a word or two, without feeling annoyed at all.
"Yes," said Grandma Li as she stood up and slowly walked to the TV.
"You kids love watching TV, so I'll turn this on."
Meng Ting swallowed the food in his mouth, scooped out another bowl from the pot, and while the old man was facing away, he quickly lit a short incense stick.
Ni Yangzhou's eyes lit up and he raised his head and took a deep breath.
"Why isn't there anyone coming out again?"
There was a snowflake on the TV. Grandma Li turned around to look at the boy who was eating and walked to the balcony.
There is a large TV antenna dish on the balcony.
Meng Ting was looking down at the little paper man enjoying the delicious food when suddenly a bright light flashed across his face.
Meng Ting looked up and saw Grandma Li standing in front of the balcony with the door half open. She had one arm stretched out and was holding a broom handle, poking the satellite signal receiver.
The signal receiver is often called a big pot. It has a similar shape and a smooth surface. It can not only receive signals but also reflect light.
Grandma Li was unsure of her hand and used too much force, causing the satellite dish to fall off and the reflected light hit Meng Ting's eyes.
"I come."
The boy stood up, helped Grandma Li sit down to rest, walked to the balcony, and quickly piled up the waste, clearing out a space.
After moving the satellite dish a few times, the TV in the room changed from a white snowflake to a news channel with clear voices.
"Ah, you kids are really smart. I adjust it every day, every day, but every time I turn it on, there is no station."
Grandma Li happily wanted to hand the remote control to Meng Ting and ask the boy to come in and watch TV.
The boy did not move.
I touched the connection and found that the place where the satellite dish was fixed was not very strong and there was a risk of it falling off.
"Grandma," Meng Ting came in and washed his hands, "Call someone to fix it. It's unstable and it could fall."
"Okay, I'll call my son this afternoon."
Seeing that the old man listened to his advice, Meng Ting said nothing more.
People would not really stay to watch TV. After the meal, Ni Yangzhou was satisfied. Meng Ting thanked him and left Grandma Li's house.
After the old man closed the door, Meng Ting took out a piece of wire from his pocket, twisted it twice outside Ni Yangzhou's door, and entered the house.
"Brother Meng," Ni Yangzhou asked quietly, "Can you open a lock?"
“Just some simple ones.”
"Is this easy?" Ni Yangzhou was surprised. "If you had started this business earlier, wouldn't you have become rich a long time ago?"
Meng Ting raised his eyebrows at an angle that Ni Yangzhou couldn't see.
"Which line of business?"
"Little...oh no, locksmith."
Meng Ting expressed his approval by keeping silent:
"That's not the ambition."
Ni Yangzhou suddenly remembered the nightmare he had once had, and asked, "How can you open the lock and jump out of my window?"
"What kind of person would jump out of the window, Brother Meng? Didn't you say it? A pervert and a thief!"
Meng Ting walked into the living room: "Then what do you say I am?"
The boy took out the little paper man, held it in his palm, and looked closely at Ni Yangzhou with his dark eyes.
Ni Yangzhou was stared at and stammered:
"Small... small..."
"You little pervert."
