The next morning, Gu Wan told Si Yehan that Nian Nian wanted to see him. He rushed in without even fastening his tie.
Gu Nian sat on the bed, holding the rabbit gift Si Yehan hadn't given away. When Si Yehan walked in, she looked up and timidly called out, "Dad."
Si Yehan froze in place, his eyes instantly red. He knelt on one knee in front of his daughter, his voice trembling, "Can...can you call me again?"
"Dad." This time Gu Nian's voice was louder, with a shy smile.
"My dear daughter, Daddy's here." Si Yehan gently held his daughter in his arms, tears silently streaming down his face. "Does that mean... Daddy's passed the observation period?"
"not yet…"
"Why...?!" Si Yehan suddenly gasped.
"We need to observe it for another week. Is that not possible?"
The little guy is really good at bargaining.
Si Yehan sighed, "Okay, one week is enough." After all, his daughter still needed his love.
On Monday night, Si Yehan stood outside his daughter's room, his ear pressed against the door, listening intently to the sounds inside with bated breath.
Six-year-old Gu Nian was telling her mother Gu Wan what happened in kindergarten today. The clear child's voice was like a string of silver bells, but it made the man outside the door feel like he was facing a great enemy.
"Mom, Xiao Ming said today that his dad loves him very much and took him to the amusement park last weekend. I said my dad loves me too, but he didn't take me to the amusement park because..." Gu Nian's voice suddenly dropped, "He... is too busy."
Si Yehan's heart felt like it was being pricked by a needle.
"It's okay, it's the same if mom takes you there."
"Well, Si Yehan is so stupid. He can't even handle me. No wonder he's still in the 'observation period'. I really don't know how he managed to win over Mom."
"..." Si Yehan smiled bitterly and touched his nose. The CEO of this powerful business empire now looked like a prisoner awaiting sentencing.
Gu Wan's gentle, soothing voice echoed from inside the door, followed by the rustling of pages in a picture book. He glanced at his watch—8:15 p.m. According to the pattern of this time, Gu Nian would probably fall asleep in half an hour.
He tiptoed downstairs and into the kitchen. "I've made Nian Nian unhappy again. Before I take her to the amusement park on holiday, I need to prepare a surprise for her breakfast tomorrow to make up for it."
Lying quietly in the refrigerator were the ingredients he had asked his assistant to buy today: strawberries, light cream, and chocolate chunks.
Si Yehan rolled up his shirt sleeves, revealing his muscular forearms, and began making a strawberry chocolate tart according to the tutorial on his phone.
"Being a dad isn't easy." He muttered to himself as he carefully poured the melted chocolate into the mold.
The day before yesterday, he tried to make bear pancakes, but ended up with a pile of charred charcoal. Yesterday, he bought a complete set of Lego, but Gu Nian pointed out three mistakes while assembling it. Today, he went to pick up his child from school, but was stopped at the gate by security because he was unfamiliar with the kindergarten rules...
A door slammed softly upstairs, and Gu Wan's brisk footsteps descended the stairs. Si Yehan quickly wiped his hands and went over to meet her, pulling her into his arms and taking a deep breath. Gu Wan had a light body fragrance, mingling with the jasmine scent of the shower gel.
"Are you asleep?" he asked in a low voice, his lips brushing against Gu Wan's earlobe.
Gu Wan nodded, smiled and poked his chest: "Mr. Si, have you been too...?"
"Shh—" Si Yehan silenced her with a kiss, his hand already restlessly sliding towards the hem of her nightgown. "I'm going crazy holding it in. That little guy is like a little guard."
Gu Wan blushed and pushed him away: "Stop it, put the chocolate away first, we need it tomorrow..."
"I know, I'm trying to please my little princess." Si Yehan sighed, but couldn't help but lean closer to Gu Wan's neck and take a deep breath. "Wait another twenty minutes. Once I'm sure she's asleep, I'll go up and hold you."
Gu Wan smiled and shook her head: "Not tonight. She said before going to bed that she would keep an eye on me, saying that you would 'cheat'."
Si Yehan raised an eyebrow: "What does a six-year-old girl know about stealing people?"
"Children mature very early these days." Gu Wan pinched his face and said, "Just bear with it. The observation period is only a few days away."
When the clock struck eleven, Si Yehan tiptoed upstairs. Gu Nian's door was ajar. He held his breath and pushed it open. Under the moonlight, the little girl curled up in the middle of the bed, tightly holding one of Gu Wan's arms. Gu Wan was obviously asleep too.
Si Yehan squatted beside the bed, carefully trying to pry open his daughter's fingers. Gu Nian frowned in her sleep, muttering, "Damn Si Yehan...bad dad," and he immediately retracted his hand in fear.
After ten minutes of stalemate, he suddenly had an idea and gently stuffed his daughter's bunny doll into her arms. Gu Nian subconsciously hugged the bunny and let go of Gu Wan's arm.
Si Yehan, triumphant, like a thief stealing treasure, carefully lifted Gu Wan up and carried her sideways. Gu Wan drowsily opened her eyes, sighed helplessly upon seeing it was him, and then leaned obediently against his chest. Si Yehan's lips curled up in triumph, and he quickly slipped back into the master bedroom, carrying his wife.
"You really are..." Gu Wan's words were interrupted by a passionate kiss. Si Yehan eagerly untied the straps of her nightgown, like a desert traveler finding an oasis.
"I miss you..." He whispered in her ear, his voice hoarse, "That little girl has no idea how much her father can endure..."
Gu Wan was about to respond when her eyes suddenly widened and she pushed him away: "Si Yehan! Door—"
Si Yehan turned around and saw the door was wide open. A small figure stood in the moonlight, holding the little rabbit in his arms, his big eyes filled with shock and anger.
"I knew it!" Gu Nian's voice was filled with tears. "Mom is missing! You are stealing Mom!"
Si Yehan froze for a moment. Gu Wan hurriedly pulled her robe back on and jumped out of bed. Gu Nian had already turned and ran back to her room, slamming the door shut. The couple exchanged bewildered glances, and Si Yehan scratched his hair in frustration.
"It's over, the observation period will be extended." He said dejectedly.
Gu Wan hurriedly put on his coat: "I'll go see her."
"Wait." Si Yehan held her back and took a deep breath. "Let me go."
He knocked gently on his daughter's door, and a muffled "Go away, bad guy" came from inside. Si Yehan pushed the door open and saw Gu Nian buried completely in the quilt, with only a few strands of hair sticking out.
"Nian Nian..." He knelt down beside the bed and whispered, "Dad was wrong."
The quilt moved, but there was no response.
Si Yehan continued, "Dad shouldn't have secretly taken Mom away. But you know what? Mom and Dad are like... like a princess and a prince. We love each other, just as much as we love you."
The quilt was lifted up, revealing a red and swollen eye: "Why does it have to be at night? Can't it be during the day?"
