Time Travel: Conditional Wealth

Chapter 30: Punch-in, Day 1

It was just daybreak when He Xi woke up. After breakfast, he rode his bike to the town. According to the convention, he should report to the town government first before being assigned work.

At 7:40 in the morning, He Xi appeared at the gate of the town government compound. It was an old house with a spacious courtyard. Two or three people were wandering in the courtyard as if they were waiting for someone.

He Xi came to work on the first day as he had inquired in advance. Just as he approached the compound, someone said, "Technician He, this way, we will take you to familiarize yourself with our town government."

The two of them waited for He Xi to make eye contact, fearing that He Xi would run away, so they stepped forward to take her bicycle and started chatting. One of them said, "It's a new bicycle, it shouldn't be cheap, right?"

The other person's expression made He Xi feel a little uncomfortable: "Yes, it was given by my childhood sweetheart."

Another person sighed: "I didn't expect that you already have a partner at such a young age. You can't judge a person by his appearance."

"By the way, let me introduce myself, Shen Chuan."

"Kong Li."

Shen Chuan stopped the car and reminded He Xi to lock it, then continued, "We are a team with a female comrade, a total of four people."

The last member is the girl who asked He Xi questions that day. Her name is Luo Hong. She used to be an assistant under an old technician. In fact, she just did odd jobs. Now she was assigned to He Xi, and she came to report to her after handing over the work at hand.

The four of them had an independent office room. The space was not big, but not crowded either. It was just enough to accommodate them with some space left over.

There were two men and two women. After the man introduced himself, he began to tell He Xi some gossip, which was about Luo Hong's former instructor.

They said he suppressed his students and assistants, and how he seized the fruits of others' labor...

He Xi was puzzled: "Didn't anyone report this to their superiors?"

Kong Li is a man of few words but insightful. He poured a cup of hot water for He Xi and put it on the table: "I reported it, but no one believed it. It's a joke that an old technician needs to snatch the achievements of these fledgling kids."

Shen Chuan sneered: "Tsk, snakes and rats are from the same nest."

He Xi curled her lips and nodded. It seemed that in daily work, one not only had to be on guard, but also be ready to "harm others" at all times. She had never said that she was a good person.

While the three were still chatting about the scandals in the yard, someone knocked on the door and the people in the room stopped talking.

He Xi glanced at the door and said, "Come in."

The person outside did not come in immediately. She hesitated for a while before pushing the door, walked in with her head lowered, and stood a little away from the three people, holding something in her hands.

He Xi recognized her as the girl who asked the question that day. Just as he was about to speak, she spoke first, as if she had made a great decision: "Hello, Teacher He, I am Luo Hong, and I am also one of your assistants. Please believe that I will not do anything to betray the team."

She kept her head down, and finally bent down 90 degrees to bow to He Xi to show her determination. He Xi frowned briefly. She didn't say anything bad about her?

He Xi stood up and walked to Luo Hong's side, saying gently: "Stand up straight, you don't need to bend down to anyone, sit down, let the four of us get acquainted with each other first."

Four people sat at four tables, forming a large rectangle, with two of them facing each other. The women sat by the window and the men sat on the outside.

The table and chairs were worn out and barely big enough for people to sit on, but the kettle was new and Kong Li had already rinsed the four teacups in advance.

The small space was like a prison cell. There was an orange incandescent lamp. The only bright light was the window on the side of He Xi. There was a layer of warm rain cloth on the outside. It was dark and not much sunlight could come in.

After hearing what He Xi said, Luo Hong nodded reluctantly and followed her to her workstation.

Luo Hong took a quick look around and found that this office was incomparable to the old technician's. Everything here was the worst in the town government compound.

When she looked away, she suddenly met the gazes of the other three people and instantly lowered her head in panic.

He Xi carefully selected clothes and shoes before going out today. He wore a military uniform and military shoes and carried a cross-body bag with the words "Serve the People" on it, which strictly conformed to the characteristics of the Cultural Revolution period.

He Xi was speechless, cleared her throat and started introducing herself again.

After the introductions were completed, He Xi was curious about why Luo Hong said those words when she came in, and asked her tentatively: "What did you mean by what you said just now?"

Luo Hong lowered his head and said in a voice as soft as a mosquito: "Everyone knows my teacher's reputation. He often lets his students steal other people's research results in the name of communication."

Shen Cong and Kong Li nodded at the same time.

He Xi nodded calmly, "This shows two things. First, he is at his wit's end. Second, he recognizes the other party's achievements."

"But we are not afraid, we have Comrade Luo Hong here."

Luo Hong was terrified: "Me? I..."

The other two didn't understand what He Xi meant. Did they want her to go back undercover?

He Xi had a naughty expression on her face: "Calm down and listen to me. Comrade Luo Hong is Teacher Fei's student, right?"

She looked around at the three of them and nodded, "In other words, she is the one who knows the opponent's tactics. Now we know ourselves and the enemy, and we can attack and defend safely."

The four of them nodded in approval, and they were amused by He Xi's confidence.

The next task is relatively simple. First, you need to be familiar with how many villages and populations the town government governs, what the terrain is like, what the water and soil are like, etc., so that you can act accordingly.

He Xi had lunch with Luo Hong. She actually forgot to bring her lunch box. She had to show her work ID to eat, but she had nothing.

The focus of the afternoon's work was on processing work permits, followed by studying the autumn harvest situation of the twenty brigades, hoping to find out the planting advantages of each.

I stood up and straightened my back, only to find that it was getting dark outside. It was just five o'clock and time to get off work. He Xi separated from the three people and started his journey home.

At the end of the first day of work, she went to Wang Qiang to discuss the shipment the next day and to meet at the usual place at 7:30 in the morning. As a result, she missed Lu Jinan who was there to pick her up from get off work.

Lu Jinan was feeling the cold wind and thinking about where He Xi might be going, but he dismissed his thoughts one by one. Finally, he shook his head and left, hoping to meet He Xi on his way home.

Lu Jinan was always thoughtful. He thought that He Xi didn't have a pair of winter cotton gloves yet, so he had to be careful about those aunts and sisters-in-law taking advantage of him, because the money he got from his childhood marriage was really too tempting.

On the way, He Xi was still thinking that she had not seen any leaders today. In other words, they wanted to give her a warning and tell her not to think that she was great just by entering the town government compound. She still had to work under them.

He Xi was walking home while thinking about something. Suddenly, she heard a noise. She looked in the direction of the sound and saw a group of people gathered together. She walked closer and found that it was an old man selling candied haws.

He Xi's heart moved, she walked forward and bought four strings of candied haws.

He Xi held the candied haws, feeling a lot of emotions in her heart. She thought of her past self, the time when she and her grandmother fought over the candied haws, and how was her family?
