Chapter 81 Sand Casting
A pot-carrying machine is divided into five parts.
1. Boiler: used to produce steam, usually a cylindrical container with a combustion chamber and heating surface.
Cylinder 2: Steam expands and does work, pushing the piston to move.
Three-crank connecting rod mechanism: converts the reciprocating motion of the piston into the rotational motion of the crankshaft.
Four steam valves: control the entry and discharge of steam to achieve the reciprocating motion of the piston in the cylinder.
5. Valve mechanism: ensures that steam enters and exits the cylinder at the correct time.
These structures are connected by pipelines and transmission devices to form a complete boiler camel machine system.
The principle is also very simple. The fuel burns in the boiler, turning the water in the boiler into steam. The steam passes through the pipe and enters the cylinder to push the piston to move, and then outputs power through the crank connecting rod.
Zhao Tianyang decided to cast the boiler, cylinder, crank connecting rod and piston as a whole using the casting method.
He first gave the specific data of the boiler, cylinder, crank connecting rod and piston to Wang Er, and asked him to carve a model out of wood.
(All the masters from the arsenal came to Changzhi)
Then he found Chang San and Li Tie, who were in charge of the blast furnace, and asked them to use iron ore to smelt a furnace of white cast iron for casting parts.
(Just control the carbon content between 2.7% and 4.0%)
He found the village chief who was building a factory on the hill and asked him where he could buy river sand.
"River sand!"
The village chief's eyes lit up: "Director Zhao, this is a coincidence. About 40 miles northeast of our Chiyu Village, there is a Dahe Village with a big river next to it."
"There is river sand in the river. People in their village often go to the river to dig sand when they build houses. But now it has been occupied by a group of hooligans. If you want to buy sand, you have to find them!"
"A hooligan?"
Zhao Tianyang smiled and said, "Thank you. I'll go talk to those people right away."
"There is a little sister in the east of the village.....There is a good brother in the west of the village..."
Looking at Zhao Tianyang leaving, the village chief smiled and hummed a song while working in a happy mood.
Wenggelang.
Zhao Tianyang came to the exit of Huangya Cave and found the special forces soldiers on guard.
"Comrade, I originally wanted to go to Dahe Village to buy some river sand to make molds, but I heard from the head of Chiyu Village that the river sand there was seized by a group of hooligans. You should report this to the higher-ups."
"Dahe Village?"
The soldier thought for a moment and asked directly: "How much river sand does Director Zhao want?"
"Let's start with one that weighs 500 to 600 kilograms!"
Zhao Tianyang said casually.
"Row."
The soldier nodded and said, "Director Zhao, please be patient for a moment. I will report to you right away. If everything goes well, you will be able to get the river sand this afternoon."
afternoon..
Looking at the soldiers transporting river sand, who still had some murderous aura on them, Zhao Tianyang silently sympathized with those ruffians.
"Well, these river sands are all very good."
Zhao Tianyang checked the river sand that was delivered and said to the company commander who was in the lead.
"That's good."
The company commander gathered the soldiers and saluted Zhao Tianyang: "Director Zhao, if you have anything to do, just notify the comrades on guard. We can come and help you at any time."
"Thank you!"
Zhao Tianyang said gratefully.
“It’s all for the revolution.”
The company commander replied with a smile, then left with his soldiers.
After the company commander and his men left, Zhao Tianyang took thirty kilograms of river sand and mixed it with the clay dug this morning according to the proportion.
The mixed products are then tested for moisture content and clay content. Both the moisture content and the clay content are related to the strength and air permeability of the final sand film.
The moisture content test is relatively simple. Just grab a handful of the mixture, weigh it first, then dry it and weigh it again. Calculate the difference between the two and you can get the percentage of moisture content. Generally speaking, the moisture content should be kept between 3% and 6%.
The clay content test is a bit complicated, so just grab a handful of the mixture, dry it, take out a container, and put the dried mixture in it.
Then pour in 475cc of distilled water and 25cc of caustic soda solution (lye), then stir quickly with a wooden stick for five minutes, add water to cover the mixture, and let it sit for 10 minutes.
After repeating this process three or four times, dry the mixture and weigh it to obtain the difference between the original weights, which is the weight of the clay.
Then you can use this data to calculate the percentage. Generally speaking, the clay content should be kept between 5% and 15%.
After repeated tests, Zhao Tianyang finally found the right ratio and began to mix clay and river sand on a large scale, obtaining 200 kilograms of qualified mixture.
With the mixture, Zhao Tianyang took the freshly carved wooden cylinder model from Wang Er and put it into a square basket.
(This basket can be made of iron or wood)
Then pour the mixture into a basket and compact it. Note that the size of the model should be slightly larger than the sand mold to allow for shrinkage and prevent voids during the casting process.
After compaction, the wooden mold can be carefully removed, and the prepared resin and river sand mixture can be evenly sprinkled into the sand mold to form the internal surface of the casting.
From then on, the sand mold is ready.
After Li Tie and his team boil out the molten white cast iron, pour in the molten iron, close the sand mold, cool it, and break the sand mold, they will get a complete white cast iron cylinder.
Of course, after getting the cylinder, you also need to remove the sand attached to it and grind the excess metal on the cylinder.
After two days of hard work, Zhao Tianyang successfully produced the sand molds needed for the pot-carrying machine.
"Begin pouring in the molten iron."
Next to the blast furnace, Zhao Tianyang gave instructions to Li Tie and others.
"Yes."
Soon, the red molten iron, still emitting billowing hot waves, was poured into the sand mold. For a moment, fog rose up at the scene, covering the sand mold.
After pouring the molten iron and sealing it, all you have to do is wait for it to cool down.
"Bang, bang, bang..."
One day later, in the afternoon.
As the sand mold was broken, silvery-white parts were revealed one by one.
"Hurry up and polish it. I can't wait to assemble it."
Zhao Tianyang waved his hand and spoke to Li Tie and others around him.
"Okay, just take a look!"
Li Tie brought his men, picked up the still warm parts on the ground, came to the workshop, and started polishing them.
At night, piles of fires were lit outside the Xiaopendi shack factory.
It took too much time to polish it, so Zhao Tianyang decided to work overtime to assemble the pot-carrying machine.
First, the cylinder, piston, and connecting rod are firmly fixed together with screws, and then the boiler, steam valve, and valve mechanism are connected.
Zhao Tianyang used iron pipes made of white iron for connection. Although the service life may be reduced due to corrosion, it is cheap.
The inside of the iron pipe is threaded on a lathe so it can be screwed directly to the boiler, and the outside is sealed with asphalt.
After four hours of intense assembly, Zhao Tianyang looked at the small pot-carrying machine in front of him and smiled.
"It's finally assembled. Now it's time to test the horsepower."
Zhao Tianyang asked Li Tie to bring people to move the lathe in the workshop outside and connect it to the pot-carrying machine.
"add water."
Zhao Tianyang waved his hand, and Li Tie and others ran to fetch water with buckets and poured it into the boiler. During this time, Liu Lao and others also ran over to watch the fun.
"The factory manager has added water."
Li Tie said.
"ignition."
This is the bad thing about the pot-camel machine. It takes a long time to preheat. I had to wait for two hours before the pot-camel machine started to emit steam.
Seeing this, Zhao Tianyang opened the steam valve and let the steam enter the cylinder.
Soon the piston under pressure started working, the power was transmitted through the connecting rod, and the lathe next to it started to turn.
"It worked, it worked."
Seeing this, everyone immediately cheered.
"Yes, Not Bad!"
Mr. Liu smiled and said, "Looking at the noise, it should be about 10 horsepower."
"Everything is difficult at the beginning. With this experience, I am confident that I can make a pot-carrying machine with greater horsepower!"
Zhao Tianyang put his hands on his hips, full of confidence.
