Chapter 35: 3 days later, I went to Junzi Pavilion

Last time, after Li Yi had a conversation with Guanyin Bodhisattva, he understood the reason why the Bodhisattva enlightened Ji Yun. There will be a war in the Western Buddhist Kingdom and it urgently needs to replenish its combat power. Li Yi guessed that the Buddha sent the Bodhisattva to the Eastern Holy Land to preach the scriptures, which is also related to this war. So let us see how the story will develop.

When Li Yi heard the knock on the door, he wondered who it could be so late, then he heard Ji Yun's voice from outside the door, "Junior Master, I have something to ask you." Li Yi opened the door and found Ji Yun standing at the door with Gongsun Chan on his back, looking around.

Li Yi smiled and said, "No need to look, this is your own home, who are you guarding against? Come in."

Inside the room, Jiyun was meditating on the bed, while Li Yi and Gongsun Chan were sitting on the only two chairs. Gongsun Chan looked at Li Yi, stood up and saluted, saying, "Thank you for your help, Master Li. I had many misunderstandings about you before, so please forgive me."

Li Yi motioned her to sit down and asked, "What's going on? Why did you come back to the temple with the little monk?"

Gongsun Chan blushed and said, "In the evening, the servant reported that Jiyun was outside the door asking to see me. I thought something big had happened, but when we met, he asked me if I still loved him."

Li Yi looked at Jiyun and smiled: "I didn't expect this little monk to be so direct. How did you answer?"

Gongsun Chan blushed and whispered, "Answer truthfully."

Li Yi looked at the beauty's shy face and said with a smile: "And then this fool took you back to the temple?"

"He told me he was willing to give up everything and take me away, and asked me if I was willing to go with him."

"So you went with him?" Gongsun Chan nodded. Li Yi slapped his forehead. "Gongsun, you went with this stupid monk. Even if you can escape, have you ever thought about how you will live in the future? What else can he do besides being a monk? How will you two live? Is he going to take you around the world and beg for food everywhere?"

Gongsun Chan said firmly: "As long as I can be with him, I am willing to beg for food!"

Li Yi rolled his eyes at her and said, "You have always had everything you wanted, so how can you bear to live in the open?"

Gongsun Chan said unhappily: "Mr. Li, please don't look down on me. I can do it!"

"If I ask you to not take a shower for a month, can you do it?"

Gongsun Chan suddenly froze, "Not taking a bath for a month? Is this possible?"

"Don't even mention not taking a bath. If you really live a life of wandering around the world, don't even mention not taking a bath for a month. I'm asking you, can you bear not changing your clothes for ten days?"

Gongsun Chan sat back in her chair, her brows furrowed into a frown.

Jiyun finished regulating his breathing, opened his eyes, and said, "Master Junior, I won't let Xiaochan suffer."

Li Yi stood up, looked at Jiyun solemnly, then raised his hand and slapped him on the head, cursing: "How dare you say that! Monks don't tell lies, you know! Why don't you let her suffer? Let me ask you, how do you plan to earn money to support her? Are you going to steal or rob?"

"Uncle Junior Master, you are joking. I can go beg for alms." Li Yi pointed at Jiyun's nose and asked Gongsun Chan: "Listen, Miss Gongsun, do you hear what people say? He wants to take you to beg for alms. He wants to support you by begging for alms!"

Gongsun Chan wanted to refute, but she found herself unable to do so, so she had to lower her head.

Li Yi continued, "Miss Gongsun, did you bring any clothes, gold and silver?"

Gongsun Chan shook her head. As a young lady, why would she need to bring her own money, let alone clothes?

Li Yi tugged at Ji Yun's old monk's robe and said, "Look at him. How far do you think you two can run in your current state? How many days can you escape?"

Jiyun looked up and said, "Disciple can run with Xiaochan on his back for three days and three nights."

Li Yi hit back with another bang, then shook his hand and said, "Shut up!"

Then there was silence in the room. Ji Yun looked up at Li Yi and asked, "Uncle Junior Master, I only know about Buddhist matters. I really don't understand worldly matters. Can you help me think of a solution?"

Gongsun Chan said quickly, "Mr. Li, on the way here, Jiyun told me about your guidance. He also said that he felt the enlightenment of the Bodhisattva when he sang the Great Compassion Mantra. Do you think the Bodhisattva will help us?"

Li Yi was about to say something bad about the Bodhisattva in his heart, but suddenly he remembered that this was a temple, and the Bodhisattva could not only see him, but also know his inner thoughts through telepathy. He quickly put away his evil magic, bowed to the west, and said, "Well, since the Bodhisattva is guiding you, then I will help you two unfortunate couples for the Bodhisattva's sake."

After that, he took out two envelopes and a purse from under the pillow and handed them to Jiyun. He suddenly realized something, turned around and handed them to Gongsun Chan, and reminded them: "Here are some loose silver and two ingots of silver. This ingot is for you two to buy a carriage, so you can't let Jiyun carry you on the road all the time. The other ingot is for you to buy some clothes to change. Now that you are out, you are no longer the eldest daughter of the Gongsun family, so spend it sparingly! The loose silver is for your food, accommodation, feeding and changing horses along the way. You must keep an eye on this money! Don't let this silly boy use it for charity, or give it all to whoever he feels sorry for, otherwise you will have nothing to eat!"

Gongsun Chan nodded in agreement. Li Yi pointed to a letter and said, "This letter contains the precautions you need to take on the way, as well as the map and route I drew. Follow the route I drew and go to Qingzhou Qing'an City. When you get to Qing'an City, ask about Liumoxuan in the city. Give this letter to Miss Bailing there. She is my wife-to-be. After seeing the letter I wrote, she will arrange a place for you to stay. You will stay in Qing'an City for the time being. When I finish dealing with things in Shangjing City, I will write to you to explain the next step."

Jiyun hurriedly thanked him after hearing this: "Thank you, Junior Master, you are really thoughtful!" However, Gongsun Chan looked at Li Yi strangely while holding the letter and purse, and asked: "You had already guessed that Jiyun would elope with me? So you prepared all this?"

Jiyun said quickly: "Chan'er, Junior Master will have his own way, you don't have to worry, Junior Master will not harm us."

Gongsun Chan shook her head and said, "I'm not afraid that Master Li will harm us, but why did Master Li make such thorough preparations?"

Li Yi started selling his official documents and said, "Alright, the secret cannot be leaked. You two should leave quickly. Now hurry to the nearest market, buy a carriage, and hurry on your way. Remember to get to Qing'an City as soon as possible. You will be safe only when you get to Liumoxuan. There is a sister Ruyun there. As long as she is there, the Gongsun family can't do anything to you. Alright, stop talking nonsense and leave quickly."

The two men bowed to Li Yi and said goodbye. Ji Yun carried Gongsun Chan on his back, jumped up, and disappeared into the night.

After the two left, Li Yi came to Zhengyuan's meditation room. He knocked on the door and said, "I know you have been waiting. Come out and do your business."

Zhengyuan opened the door and said with a smile, "Did Jiyun leave with Donor Gongsun?"

Li Yi nodded and said, "Let's proceed according to plan."

Zhengyuan nodded and turned away. Li Yi stretched himself and went back to his room to sleep.

The next morning, Li Yi was awakened by a knock on the door. He was in a very bad mood when he opened the door and cursed, "Who disturbs me so early in the morning? What time is it? Didn't your mother teach you..." But when he saw that it was Monk Zhengjue standing at the door with a sad face, Li Yi had to suppress his anger and asked, "Master Zhengjue, what do you want from me?"

Zhengjue forced a smile and said, "Xiuyuan, it's like this. My senior brother said last night that he had to go out for something important, so he asked me to take charge of the affairs of the temple. If I encounter any difficulties, I can discuss it with you. The trivial matters in the temple are easy to deal with, except for the morning and evening classes. I am not good at this, so I would like to ask you to help, Xiuyuan. You have been giving evening classes to everyone these two days, and the effect is very good. I wonder..."

Li Yi thought about it. The old monk was not here. He asked Zhengjue to consult with him. Isn't this like a monkey becoming king when there is no tiger in the mountain? Ugh! I am not a monkey! I am not even Sun Wukong! I have to be locked up in a small dark room for 500 years! I am not a monkey! But I can do something! Hehehe! Then he replied to Zhengjue, "Master Zhengjue, I have no choice but to do this. Please go back to the hall and wait. I will go wash up and come back soon."

"I'm talking about Xiuyuan. You see how troublesome this is. It's better to just become a monk and avoid all these worldly matters." Although Li Yi was cursing in his heart, he held back and didn't burst out on the surface. He waved his hand to send Zhengjue away, hurried to the well to wash his face, tidied himself up, and walked towards the main hall.

Li Yi arrived at the main hall. The monks had already arrived. He did not say anything polite. He stood in front of everyone and said, "In today's morning class, I will not tell stories. I will teach you a Buddhist song, the Great Compassion Mantra. This song can calm the mind, relieve sorrow, and get rid of worries. If you sing it with the blessing of Buddhism, it can save people. So everyone must learn this Buddhist song in today's morning class." So Li Yi began to lead the monks to learn Buddhist songs...

After the morning class, Li Yi selected ten monks who sang the best and kept them in the main hall to sing the song repeatedly, saying that if you sing it more times, you will understand the Buddhist teachings. Then he asked Zheng Jue'an to find ten monks who were best at speaking to preach the sutras, interpret divinations, and tell fortunes for the pilgrims in the side hall.

Zhengjue was puzzled and asked, "Xiuyuan, why did you make such an arrangement?" Li Yi smiled and said, "These pilgrims, when they come to our temple, they can't just burn incense and worship Buddha. We should provide diversified services. Only in this way can the temple have stronger comprehensive competitiveness and more people can come to worship Buddha. This is to promote Buddhism!"

Zhengjue was half-believing and half-doubting, thinking he would wait and see, while Li Yi turned around and walked to the statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, performed a Buddhist ceremony and chanted, "Bodhisattva, if you want to spread Buddhism, attracting believers is an indispensable step. People in the world are ignorant and have many delusions, but if you ignore these delusions, I'm afraid no one will believe in Buddhism. Please show your magical powers and solve the problems of those pilgrims who are sincere to Buddhism."

The statue of Avalokitesvara flashed with golden light, and suddenly three pairs of arms appeared behind the original statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, with a wisdom eye on each palm. Upon seeing this, Zhengjue immediately kowtowed and knelt, chanting, "The Bodhisattva has appeared! Meet Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva!"

The monks also knelt and bowed. Li Yi smiled and said, "Let's all stand up. Worshiping the Buddha is about the heart, not the body. It's useless even if you knock your head. It's better to share the worries of the Bodhisattva, think about how to do good deeds and help the Bodhisattva realize his great wish!" As soon as these words came out, the monks all started their respective work, and everything was in order.

Zhengjue saw all of this. He had long admired Li Yi and knew that he was no ordinary person. However, he was still frightened that just a few words could cause Avalokitesvara to appear. He came to Li Yi, bowed and said, "Amitabha, Xiuyuan, I have some doubts. I wonder if you can help me solve them?"

Li Yi smiled and said, "You want to know why I can ask the Bodhisattva to show his power, right?"

Zhengjue nodded, and Li Yi replied, "In fact, in this temple, all our words and actions can be seen by the Arhats, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhas. As long as you pray sincerely, your words can reach their ears. As long as your wishes are reasonable, they can also be realized, just like I just asked the Bodhisattva to help those who are sincere to the Buddha."

Zhengjue was confused and looked at Li Yi and asked, "Uh, Xiuyuan, is it because I was not sincere enough in praying to the Buddha?"

"What wish did you pray to the Buddha for?"

"I pray to the Buddha to bless the world so that there will be no more wars, no more suffering, and everyone will be kind and free from disease and disaster."

Li Yi rolled his eyes at Zhengjue and said, "I told you it's a reasonable wish. If the Buddha could fulfill your wish, he wouldn't have to work so hard to spread Buddhism everywhere! The Buddha is also a human being and doesn't have such great abilities. Even the Taoist master can't do it. You, when you make a wish next time, think of something more realistic!"

Zhengjue nodded.

Pilgrims began to enter the temple one after another. Li Yi said to the ten monks who were meditating in the main hall: "Let's start the Buddhist song!" Then the ten monks chanted the "Great Compassion Mantra" while beating wooden fish. The pilgrims were at a loss as to what to do.
