Chapter 33 Buddha Talks About Fate

Last time we talked about Master Zhengyuan asking Li Yi to help end the evil relationship between Gongsun Chan and Jiyun, but Li Yi was unwilling to do so. Let us continue to see what will happen next.

After hearing Zheng Yuan's words, Li Yi said unhappily, "Old monk, you are so heartless. You can't afford to offend the Gongsun family, but I can? To tell you the truth, I came to Shangjing City to avoid the revenge of Yu Wenye from Qingzhou. Do you want me to help you stop Miss Gongsun? How can I stop her? Can I make her transfer her feelings and not fall in love with me?"

An idea suddenly flashed through the old monk's mind, and then he thought of the impression that Gongsun had on Li Yi just now, and he quickly dismissed the idea, with a helpless look on his face. Li Yi looked at Zhengyuan, he knew that this old monk was a good person, and even a good monk, not only was he kind-hearted, but also had a profound Buddhist teaching, but his emotional intelligence was probably a little low.

Li Yi sighed and said, "Alas, old monk, I feel sorry for you and am willing to help you think of a solution, but let me make it clear first, success or failure depends on fate." Zheng Yuan smiled and said, "Xiuyuan, tell me what you are planning to do. If I can help, I will definitely do my best."

Li Yi said, "You know, when I was chatting with Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva yesterday, Jiyun suddenly realized the Dharma, and he meditated beside me and realized the word cause and effect."

"The words cause and effect? What do they mean?"

"Old monk, you know that Avalokitesvara is in charge of the law of cause and effect. I guess the Bodhisattva is trying to enlighten Jiyun. His cause and effect has come. If he can resolve this cause and effect, he will be able to break through the bottleneck!"

Zheng Yuan was overjoyed when he heard this and said, "Really? If that's the case, that would be great!"

Li Yi poured a basin of cold water on him in time and said, "Don't be too happy too soon. This cause and effect is not easy to resolve! A lady from a big clan, it's not an exaggeration to say that she is worth a lot of money, right?"

"Of course not!"

"If you want to end this karma, there are two ways. One is to make Miss Gongsun give up, and the other is to let them finally get married. Which one do you choose?"

"Why do I need to choose Xiuyuan? Don't make fun of the old monk!"

Li Yi said seriously, "I'm not kidding you. Old monk, think about it, why would this Miss Gongsun fall in love with Jiyun, and not even care about the world's eyes, and fall in love with Jiyun without hesitation? With this kind of mentality, do you think she is the kind of person who will give up easily? What is she afraid of? Life and death? Rumors? You should know that you, old monk, are a master of the extraordinary realm. If she is not afraid of you, what else would she be afraid of?"

Zheng Yuan said helplessly, "It is rare to find such an infatuated woman in the world, but she and Ji Yun are from two completely different worlds. If they want to be together, one of them must give up everything!"

Li Yi nodded and said, "Well, the old monk has become smarter! That's true. Then let me ask you, which side do you think will choose to give up?" Zhengyuan smiled and said, "It must be the donor Gongsun. Now Jiyun's Buddhist heart is firm and solid as a rock, and his heart towards Buddha is sincere!"

"Well, if Miss Gongsun gave up everything to be with Jiyun, how would the Gongsun family react?"

"I'm afraid they will try every possible means to suppress our Xishan Temple. The worst case scenario is that they will drive us all away."

"Just drive him away and that's it? You underestimate the big clan! I guess killing Jiyun is the most likely possibility, and the worst possibility is to kill all the monks in this temple." "Xiuyuan, do you underestimate the old monk? Do you think that the old monk, the Buddhist Vajra, is just a decoration?"

Li Yi rolled his eyes at Zheng Yuan and said, "Old monk, of course you are powerful, but I want to ask you, if the imperial court sent troops to wipe out Xishan Temple, would you dare to fight against the imperial court?"

"The imperial court? Why would the imperial court send people to clear out my temple?"

"It's simple, because there is a lecherous monk in your temple!" "What lecherous monk?"

"Confusing right and wrong and distorting the facts are common tactics used in the secular officialdom. It's too easy for them to kill you if they target a temple like yours! I want to ask you what would you do if the court sent someone to ask you to hand over the lecherous monk Jiyun? Do you dare to go against the court?"

Zheng Yuan sat in a chair in a daze, and sighed: "Although I know that this big clan is not to be trifled with, the old monk never thought that they would have such means."

Li Yi felt amused: Old monk, you should learn more about the Confucianists' tricks. Their methods are probably more sinister than what I said!

Li Yi looked at Zheng Yuan who was in a daze and said, "Old monk, I know you dare not turn against the court, so we have to think of a way to control this matter between Jiyun and Miss Gongsun, and not give the Gongsun family room to take advantage of the situation."

"This? Cultivating fate? The old monk's wisdom, understanding, and talent are not as high as yours. Don't keep me in suspense. Tell me what you think."

Li Yi said, "Have you heard of the Yellow Millet Dream?" Zheng Yuan shook his head, and Li Yi patiently explained, "It is a trap set up to let the person see the future in a dream and what the future will be like, and then break the dream to make him realize that everything is false."

Zheng Yuan asked doubtfully, "Xiu Yuan, do you want me to set up a trap and then destroy their hopes?" Li Yi smiled and said, "Old monk, your brain works very quickly. This is what I think..."

Li Yi told Zheng Yuan about his planned layout. Zheng Yuan felt his scalp tingling. He asked, "Xiu Yuan, isn't this a bit risky?"

"If you can come up with a better way, I won't have to worry about it. You can do it yourself. This time we have to wrestle with the big clan, and it will not work without paying a price. It depends on you, old monk, whether you are willing to be a bad guy for once!"

Zhengyuan thought about it, looked at Li Yi, and nodded heavily. Li Yi smiled and said, "Okay, let's proceed step by step according to the plan. I will go and deal with Jiyun first to see if your disciple with a firm heart can withstand the first test!"

Zhengyuan stood up, bowed to Li Yi and said, "I'll leave everything to Xiuyuan. The old monk will take care of everything."

Li Yi walked out of the door, put his arm around Ji Yun's shoulders, and said with a smile: "Little monk, you are lucky. I made a bet with the old monk just now, and he lost. So in the next two days, you can only obey me and don't listen to him!" "Little Master, I also listen to you. There is no point in making this bet!"

Li Yi rolled his eyes and said, "Do you think I would do a business that would lose money? Do you think I would be the one who suffers the loss?"

Jiyun shook his head and said, "Uncle Junior, I dare not say anything else, but I feel that you will definitely not be able to eat this." "So, okay, stop talking nonsense, and accompany me down the mountain to have a good meal!"

So Li Yi took Jiyun down the mountain. On the way, Li Yi asked, "Little monk, the Miss Gongsun today is very beautiful. I was wondering why you didn't want to rescue Miss Yan'er in the Exiled Immortal Tower. It turns out that you have a lover, and she is a lady from a noble family. She is indeed much better than Yan'er."

"Uncle Junior Master, you are making fun of your disciple again, so please don't mention the matter of the Exiled Immortal Tower anymore."

Li Yi smiled and said, "Okay, then tell me about you and Miss Gongsun. How did you meet? And how did she fall in love with you?" Ji Yun's face turned red instantly, he lowered his head and said nothing, just hurried on his way.

Li Yi said: "Little monk, have you ever heard this saying? Five hundred glances in the previous life are exchanged for one passing by in this life."

Jiyun shook his head. Li Yi turned around, found an open space under a tree, sat down to meditate, and motioned Jiyun to sit down as well.

Jiyun asked, "Master Junior, you are tired. How about I carry you on my back?"

Li Yi said, "I want to talk to you about the Buddhist law of fate." When he heard it was Buddhist law, Jiyun changed his posture, sat in meditation on the spot, his body upright, and listened attentively.

Li Yi said, "The Buddha said that five hundred glances in the previous life can exchange for a passing by in this life. I use a thousand glances to exchange for a stop in front of you in this life. I asked the Buddha: How many times do I need to look back to truly live in your heart? The Buddha was speechless. I can only look back frequently, like a moth to a flame, regardless of the consequences and without reasons. Look back, look back again and again, thousands of times, you are in my eyes and in my heart. I look back frequently, looking forward to your tenderness."

After Li Yi finished speaking, he saw the purple-gold energy gathering and slowly merging into his body.

Jiyun saw it clearly and asked, "Uncle Junior Master, is this really what the Buddha said?"

"Although these are not the Buddha's original words, they are roughly the same. Didn't you see the purple-gold aura? It is a mixture of Buddha's light and talent, which is enough to prove that what I said is true."

Jiyun nodded and said, "My Buddha Tathagata is a person of great wisdom and great supernatural powers, so he can explain fate so vividly."

Li Yi asked, "Little monk, do you think this Miss Gongsun is destined to be with you or not?"

Jiyun remained silent. Li Yi continued, "Actually, this section of 'Buddha Says Fate' is adapted from a story. Do you want to listen to it?"

Jiyun asked, "Does this story have anything to do with Buddhism?"

"Of course, the Buddha is in this story."

"Then I want to listen. I want to hear how the Buddha views love between men and women, and how he talks about fate." Li Yi smiled knowingly and began to tell a story. The name of the story is "Stone Bridge Zen":

There was a young and beautiful girl, born in a rich family, with many talents. When she reached the age of marriage, the matchmaker almost broke the threshold of her house, but she never wanted to get married because she felt that she had not yet met the man she really wanted to marry. Until one day, she went to a temple fair to relax, and in the crowded crowd, she saw a man. In just a moment, the girl decided that he was her husband.

Unfortunately, the temple fair was too crowded, and she could not get close to the man. She just watched him disappear in the crowd. In the next two years, the girl looked for the man everywhere, but he seemed to have evaporated without a trace. The girl prayed to the Buddha every day, hoping to see the man again. Her sincerity moved the Buddha, and the Buddha appeared.

Buddha: "Do you want to see that man again?"

Girl: "Yes! I just want to see him again!"

Buddha: "You have to give up everything you have now, including your loving family and happy life."

Girl: “I do!”

Buddha: "You still have to practice for another 500 years before you can see him. Don't you regret it?"

Girl: “I don’t regret it!”

The girl turned into a big stone, lying in the wilderness, and suffered from the wind and rain for more than 400 years. She was miserable, but she didn't think it was a big deal. What really made her miserable was that she didn't see anyone in these 400 years, and she didn't see any hope. She almost collapsed. In the last year, a quarrying team came and chiseled her into stone slabs and transported them into the city. They were building a stone bridge, so the girl became the guardrail of the stone bridge.

On the first day the stone bridge was built, the girl saw the man she had been waiting for five hundred years! He was in a hurry, as if he had something urgent to do, and walked quickly through the middle of the stone bridge. Of course, he didn't notice that a stone was staring at him intently. The man disappeared again, and the Buddha appeared again.

Buddha: “Are you satisfied?”

Girl: "No! Why? Why am I just the guardrail of the bridge? If I were placed in the middle of the bridge, I could touch him, I could touch him!"

Buddha: "You want to touch him? Then you have to practice for another 500 years!"

Girl: “I do!”

Buddha: "You have suffered so much, don't you regret it?"

Girl: “No regrets!”

The girl turned into a big tree, growing beside a busy official road. Many people passed by here every day, and the girl watched every day, but this was even more painful, because she saw a person coming with hope countless times, and her hope was shattered countless times.

If it weren't for the previous five hundred years of training, I believe the girl would have collapsed long ago! As the days passed, the girl's heart gradually calmed down. She knew that he would not show up until the last day.
