Forensic Doctor: Finding the Way Back to the Mystery of Ancient Realms
Chapter 66: Shadows and Mysteries at the Top
The hustle and bustle of the train station was divided into two worlds by the temporary isolation zone. On one side were the hurried travelers, and on the other side were Xu Youran and Situ Han concentrating on investigating the scene. The sunlight shone through the sparse clouds, dappled on the half-open black suitcase, adding a bit of gloom.
Xu Youran put on white gloves and carefully opened the suitcase lid. An indescribable stench hit her nose, but she did not retreat. She just frowned slightly and looked more carefully. In addition to the body, there were a few scattered old newspapers and a crumpled map inside the suitcase, which seemed to have been hastily stuffed in to cover up the traces.
"Look here, the mark on the map." Xu Youran pointed to a place marked with a red circle on the map. It was an abandoned factory area located on the edge of S City.
Situ Han took the map, a trace of solemnity flashed in his eyes: "This may be the stop before the murderer dumped the body, or it may be the next target."
At the same time, the technical staff of the S City Police were taking all-round photos and collecting evidence at the scene. The police representative, Captain Li, came over and reported the preliminary findings to the two: "The identity of the deceased is still being confirmed, but based on the state of the body, the time of death should be between last night and this morning. The fingerprints and DNA samples on the suitcase have been collected, and we hope to find a match as soon as possible."
As the investigation deepened, the identity of the victim gradually surfaced - he was a businessman named Zhang Wei, who had recently fallen into trouble due to the failure of a big business. At Zhang Wei's home, his wife and daughter burst into tears, and they could hardly bear the sudden bad news.
"Mrs. Zhang, please try to stay calm. We need to understand some of the circumstances." Xu Youran comforted her gently, trying to draw out a bit of rationality from her grief.
Mrs. Zhang's eyes were filled with tears and her voice was trembling: "He...he has been saying recently that someone is following him and he doesn't dare to go out alone at night. I thought he was under too much pressure, but I didn't expect..."
This information was like an undercurrent, stirring up ripples in Xu Youran's heart. She realized that Zhang Wei's death might not be accidental, but was closely linked to a bigger conspiracy.
Based on the descriptions of witnesses and clues from surveillance videos, Xu Youran and Situ Han locked on the suspect Li Minghui. They quickly mobilized police forces and conducted a carpet search of places where Li Minghui might be hiding.
After some twists and turns, they finally found Li Minghui in a remote small hotel. However, when they broke into the room, they found that Li Minghui was no longer in the room, leaving only some traces of hastily packed luggage and an unfinished note.
"He ran away." Situ Han analyzed calmly, "But there must be clues he left here."
Sure enough, in the corner of the room, Xu Youran found an old diary, which recorded the secret transactions between Li Minghui, the Zhao family and the senior military officer. Each transaction was accompanied by a large sum of money and an unspeakable mission, and the most recent one was about the mysterious suitcase and the body.
While tracking down Li Minghui, Xu Youran and Situ Han also met another capable assistant of the Zhao family, Zhao Min. Zhao Min is Zhao Tianxiong's niece, smart and cunning, and has a high degree of loyalty to the family business.
"Miss Xu, Commander Situ, what a coincidence." Zhao Min came forward with a smile, but her eyes were as sharp as an eagle's.
"Ms. Zhao, we seem to always meet in such unpleasant occasions." Xu Youran responded calmly, but was secretly on guard in her heart.
"Oh? Really? That only means that we are all working towards the same goal, but using different methods." Zhao Min changed the subject, "However, I advise you to give up the pursuit of Li Minghui. He knows too much and it will not benefit you."
Situ Han's eyes shone when he heard this: "Miss Zhao, are you threatening us?"
Zhao Min chuckled and did not answer directly, but left a meaningful sentence: "Sometimes, knowing too much can become a burden."
Back at the police station, Xu Youran and Situ Han sorted out and analyzed all the clues they had collected. They found that behind this series of cases, there seemed to be a huge network of interests hidden, involving the military, government, and business circles, and the Zhao family and the senior military official were the core of this network.
"They use small figures like Li Minghui as pawns to conduct illegal transactions and eliminate dissidents." Xu Youran analyzed, "And the body in the suitcase is probably the bait they threw out to cover up a bigger secret."
Situ Han nodded in agreement: "We must find Li Minghui as soon as possible and get more clues from him. At the same time, we must also strengthen the surveillance of the Zhao family and that senior military official to prevent them from taking desperate measures."
Just as the two were preparing to take further action, an unexpected phone call broke the silence. A deep and familiar voice came from the other end of the phone: "Xu Youran, Situ Han, do you think you can find the truth this way? You are too naive..."
The voice stopped abruptly, leaving only the busy tone echoing in the empty office. Xu Youran and Situ Han looked at each other, and they could see solemnity and determination in each other's eyes.
"It's him again." Xu Youran said in a deep voice. She was referring to the mysterious man who had been manipulating behind the scenes but had never shown up.
Situ Han clenched his fists, a cold light flashed in his eyes: "No matter who he is, we must find him out."
The two quickly deployed the next plan and decided to split up into two groups. Xu Youran was responsible for continuing to track Li Minghui's whereabouts, while Situ Han personally went to the Zhao family and the military camp where the senior military official was located to conduct a more in-depth investigation.
Xu Youran used her connections in S City and her detective skills accumulated over the years to gradually narrow down the area where Li Minghui fled. She found that Li Minghui seemed to be particularly familiar with the mountains and forests around S City, so she decided to focus the search there.
After several days of arduous searching, Xu Youran finally found Li Minghui in a hidden cave. Li Minghui was already dying, but when he saw Xu Youran, a glimmer of relief flashed in his eyes.
"Miss Xu...you are here...I...I know I was wrong..." Li Minghui spoke with difficulty, his voice weak but firm.
Xu Youran approached him and whispered, "Tell us everything you know, and maybe you can still be redeemed."
Li Minghui used up his last bit of strength to reveal the true identity of the high-ranking military official and the secret deal between him and the Zhao family. He also revealed a shocking news: the body in the suitcase was just the tip of the iceberg, and there was a much larger and more cruel conspiracy hidden behind it.
On the other hand, Situ Han also made significant progress. He used his prestige and power in the military to conduct an in-depth investigation into the background and behavior of the senior military officer. He found that this senior officer not only colluded with the Zhao family, but was also involved in multiple cases of arms smuggling and corruption.
In a secret operation, Situ Han personally led the team to destroy an underground arsenal controlled by the senior executives and seized a large number of illegal weapons and evidence. This action not only deterred those forces who were ready to make a move, but also provided key support for the subsequent case investigation.
Just when Xu Youran and Situ Han thought they were getting closer to the truth, a new clue quietly emerged. An anonymous person revealed more details about the body in the suitcase to them through a letter. The letter mentioned that a special mark on the body was strikingly similar to an unsolved family murder case in S City during the Republic of China period.
This discovery shocked the two men, who realized that the series of cases before them was probably just a small part of the intricate web. The real mastermind behind the scenes might be more powerful and cunning than they imagined.
"We can't stop," Xu Youran said firmly, "No matter how cruel the truth is, we must get to the bottom of it."
Situ Han nodded in agreement, his eyes gleaming with determination: "For the peace of S City and for the souls of those innocent people, we must continue to move forward."
