On the way back home, their family was targeted by bandits from the village.

Among the hired coachman and his family of five, only his original wife, who looked like a servant and was particularly sensible and obedient, was retained by the bandits as a cook because of her good cooking skills. The remaining five people were all killed by the bandits.

As for the other thin, tall middle-aged woman, she was married into the family by her husband's family for the purpose of bringing good luck, but in the end the plan ended in failure.

Her husband's family wanted to go back on their word and "return the goods" and asked her parents' family to return the large sum of money they had given. Her parents' family disagreed, and the two families became completely enemies.

In order to reduce losses and vent their anger, her in-laws simply sold her to a human trafficker.

The trafficker saw that although she looked ordinary, she was hardworking, capable and a decent person, so he sold her to a local gentry.

She worked as a servant in that family for more than ten years, until the mistress of the house, who treated her very well, passed away and the master of the house married a new young wife. Then she was driven out by the wife, who found fault with her and drove her out. Then, when she was confused and didn't know where to go, she was caught by bandits who came to the city for fun and was taken back to the village.

Like the middle-aged woman with a scar on her face, she didn't want to go back and face her greedy relatives and let them sell her again, so when they learned that Gu Wenxuan would take those young women away, they both came to beg Gu Wenxuan.

Gu Wenxuan asked them some questions, observed their words and actions, and then agreed to take them away.

As for the other men and women who wanted to go home and reunite with their families, Gu Wenxuan simply sent them away after they helped bury the bandits' bodies.

These people were basically locals. After thanking Gu Wenxuan and Bai Jingzhou again, they went down the mountain in groups of three or five.

Bai Jingzhou and his companions did not stay on the mountain for long. They divided the valuables into several portions. The portion consisting mainly of silver, jewelry, calligraphy and paintings, books, and medicinal herbs was carried by Gu Wenxuan and Bai Jingzhou, the portion consisting mainly of cloth, silk, pens, ink, paper, and inkstones was shared by the others, and the portion consisting mainly of food and ironware was carried by the two cows and a horse.

The group went down the mountain in a mighty procession. Bai Jingzhou gave each of the young man who helped them move things and his three companions a small bag of food as a reward for their hard work.

Since the young man refused to accept the silver equivalent to the two cows and the horse, Gu Wenxuan and Bai Jingzhou took advantage of his unpreparedness and secretly stuffed two heavy silver bracelets into his purse.

"The rice given to you is polished japonica rice, and the rice given to them is sorghum." Bai Jingzhou stuffed the cloth bag of grain belonging to the young man into the large backpack behind him, "Be careful on the road, and keep an eye on your belongings."

The young man smiled and nodded vigorously, "Don't worry, benefactor, the four of us all live nearby. Now that these damn bandits are gone, we will definitely be able to get home safely."

Bai Jingzhou nodded, "That's good."

After a pause, he continued, "Silver and money must be hidden well. Otherwise, even if it is not stolen or robbed on the road, it will be easily divided up by others under the pretext of 'borrowing' after you return home."

The young man was stunned. He had never considered the latter point, but he knew that Bai Jingzhou was doing it for his own good. After thinking about it carefully, he also agreed with Bai Jingzhou's considerations.

Indeed, if the news that they got the money spread in the village, there was no telling how many people would try their best to get a piece of the pie.

The young man said seriously, "Don't worry, we will be very careful."

His three friends also nodded vigorously.

This money was given to them by their benefactor out of mercy after they had been oppressed, beaten and scolded by the bandits. They didn't want to give it away for free to their relatives and neighbors who didn't necessarily have a good relationship with them.

After reluctantly bidding farewell to Bai Jingzhou and others, the young man set out for home with his friends. Gu Wenxuan and Bai Jingzhou first took the women who wanted to depend on them for a living to the town where they had stayed for a night.

After selling most of the cloth, silk, and medicinal herbs in the town, they first found a noodle restaurant for a big meal, and then went to the town's best-reputed carpenter to buy two ox carts and a horse carriage.

The horses and cows were ready, and after checking that the vehicles were indeed sturdy and durable, Gu Wenxuan, Bai Jingzhou, and the middle-aged woman with a scar on her face drove away in each of the vehicles.

The horse-drawn carriage was driven by Gu Wenxuan, which contained silver and some of the spoils that they had not sold. One ox-cart was used to carry people, and the other was used to transport grain.

Gu Wenxuan and her group spent the next three and a half days on the road.

The women left that sad place, and their moods gradually became brighter. In the process of getting along with them, Gu Wenxuan and Bai Jingzhou also got to know more about each of their personalities and specialties.

In general, these women are pretty good. They are hardworking, dutiful, and most importantly, they all have the kind of tenacity that Gu Wenxuan admires the most, which is the resilience that endures all kinds of hardships.

After enduring three and a half days of violent bumps on ancient dirt roads and wooden carts, Gu Wenxuan and Bai Jingzhou finally brought all their spoils back to Liulin Town.

The two men first rented a yard on the edge of the town so that the women could have a place to stay, and then transported most of the spoils in batches to the small valley.

The fourteen women they brought to Liulin Town did not truly feel relieved until this moment.

They rented a house for them, left them money, food and cloth, and allowed them to go out freely. It can be seen that these two people are indeed not the kind of unscrupulous human traffickers who give you a little sweetness first and then push you into the fire pit in exchange for money.

They really met a good person!

What these women don’t know is that in the next month or so, they will continue to encounter more poor women with the same fate as them.

Why? Because after Bai Jingzhou and Gu Wenxuan carried the spoils and showed up in the village, they immediately went out to rob other thieves.

They looted all the mountain strongholds with less than 50 people, leaving no bandits alive. The surviving victims either returned home, committed suicide, or followed Gu Wenxuan and Bai Jingzhou to Liulin Town to start their new life.

It is worth mentioning that Gu Wenxuan and Bai Jingzhou happened to run into Mao Ge and others who had escaped from Gu Wenxuan in one of the bandit camps.

Gu Wenxuan took a look and thought, hey, it’s an old acquaintance, she must take revenge immediately.

She rubbed her hands together and rushed forward to wipe the man's neck.
