The road to wealth of a peasant widow

Chapter 16 Killing the Wolf

When the sun was about to set, Chen Cui finally returned home in a dishevel.

She was carrying a backpack and dragging a simple stretcher made of a large bundle of branches, on which were placed firewood and yams dug today, and at the bottom were the corpses of a pheasant and a wolf!

That's right, she almost died in the wolf's mouth today. If she hadn't completely let down her guard and dodged in time and entered the space, she would probably have lost her life here.

The thrill of that moment made her heart suddenly rise up and beat violently.

Chen Cui held her chest in the space for a long time to calm herself down, and her heartbeat slowed down. She also regained her composure.

She didn't actually see clearly what animal attacked her, but based on that fleeting impression, she felt that it looked like a dog.

But if it was really a dog, it would not attack people silently. In the mountains and forests, the only thing that looks similar to a dog can only be a wolf!

But aren't wolves active at night and hiding during the day? How could they appear in broad daylight and ambush her?

Chen Cui was a little confused, but she didn't have time to think about it. She had to deal with it well and get through the crisis.

If it really was a wolf that held grudges, it would not give up so easily if it missed its target. Her scent was still there, so it was estimated that the wolf would lurk there or summon its companions to fight together.

She couldn't stay in this space forever, she had to go home, as there were several children waiting for her at home.

If she doesn't go home when it gets dark, Changping will probably come out to look for her.

Chen Cui's heart began to lift again when she thought about the risk of the child facing a wolf.

She couldn't just sit there and wait for death, she had to take the initiative and keep the wolf.

She tried to calm herself down and planned how to win the battle against the wolf.

Her greatest reliance is space. After making a move once, she can disappear in front of the wolf at any time, and then look for an opportunity to attack again!

After preparing herself mentally, she gripped the hatchet tightly and left the space.

Chen Cui still had some luck, as she came out from behind the wolf. She reacted quickly and chopped the wolf's hind legs with the hatchet.

In an instant, blood splattered on the wolf's legs.

She had seen in the animal world that a wolf's weak points were its legs, waist and nose.

The reason for attacking the legs first instead of the waist is to damage its ability to move and make it lose flexibility.

Chen Cui succeeded in her attack, and immediately, before the wolf could react, she went around its side and quickly hid in space.

She is waiting for a second chance.

This happened again and again, leaving Chen Cui with several cuts on the wolf's body, on its two hind legs and waist.

After several attacks, the wolf's fighting power was greatly reduced, and it was difficult to display its original ferocity, but its combative nature was still there, and it would not leave until it saw the enemy.

When Chen Cui came out of the space for the last time, she seized the opportunity and gave it a hard blow on the head.

While the wolf was too weak to get up, Chen Cui stabbed it several more times until the wolf's body collapsed to the ground, without any movement.

She was afraid that the wolf would fake its death to deceive people, so she almost cut its neck off before she collapsed to the ground in exhaustion.

At this time, the surroundings were scattered with wolf blood, and a lot of it was splashed on her face and body. Without looking in the mirror, Chen Cui knew that she must be in a very miserable state.

But she didn't dare to stay here to rest any longer, fearing that the smell of blood would attract other animals. She hurriedly put the wolf corpse into the space, went in to fetch water and wash herself before setting out on the return journey.

Because she was in a hurry to get home and walked nervously, she almost got lost. She tried several times before she found the correct path.

When they were almost at the foot of the mountain, she managed to make a stretcher, put all the day's harvest on it, and dragged it along.

As soon as she came out of the forest, she saw from afar Changping holding Suisui and his two younger brothers looking around at the intersection near the back door.

As soon as they saw Chen Cui, they immediately ran towards her, shouting.

Sui Sui hadn't seen his mother for a long time. Before Chen Cui even got close, he stretched out his two little hands towards her, asking for a hug.

Chen Cui smiled bitterly. She really couldn't hug her now.

Before setting off, she rolled on the ground several times to cover up the blood and smell on her body. The blood stains on her clothes were covered with yellow soil, which could be concealed a little.

But this made him look even more disheveled, with messy hair and yellow dirt all over his face and clothes, as if he had just crawled out of a pile of dirt.

Changping had originally felt relieved when he saw his mother, but when he saw Chen Cui looking so miserable, he couldn't help but start to worry again.

"Mom, what's wrong with you?"

Chang'an and Changfu also looked at Chen Cui worriedly, waiting for her answer.

As Changping spoke, he handed Suisui to Changfu to hold, and he and Changan took the stretcher from their mother.

Chen Cui waved her hand tiredly: "Let's talk about it when we get home."

The family entered from the backyard. After entering, Chen Cui immediately closed and locked the door, and asked Changfu to go to the front yard to close the main gate as well.

Although their house was in mourning and no one would come to visit easily, she still gave such instructions cautiously.

After making sure that no one would come in, Chen Cui removed the firewood and yam from the shelf, revealing the wolf corpse at the bottom.

Except for the naive Sui Sui, all the other children were shocked.

Changfu was the first to shout: "Mom, is this a wolf? Where did it come from?"

As he said this, he took a stick and poked the wolf's belly out of curiosity.

Changping thought more and when he saw the wolf's death, he couldn't help but look at Chen Cui carefully. He pulled her clothes and looked left and right, fearing that she had some unknown wounds on her body.

Chen Cui cleared her throat and said, "I found this on the mountain. I don't know who this wolf had fought with. It was injured and almost dead. I saw it and killed it with a knife."

Of course, she couldn't say that she won the battle against the wolf by relying on the space. However, with Chen's physical strength, it was impossible for her to gain the upper hand in a single fight with the wolf. She could only say that she took advantage of the opportunity and gave the credit to others.

Even though Chen Cui downplayed her role, the boys were still shocked.

In their eyes, their mother was a hardworking and capable housewife who could do housework and farm work, but it was impossible for her to fight against wild beasts.

Not to mention Chen, even the strongest and most powerful man in the village might not be able to kill a wolf.

But Chen Cui looked calm and had no wounds on her body, so the people had no choice but to believe her.

After confirming that Chen Cui was unharmed, the three brothers began to circle around the wolf corpse, poking it back and forth with sticks and exclaiming in surprise from time to time.

This was the first time they had the opportunity to see a wild animal like a wolf up close. Although it was dead, it was enough to satisfy the curiosity of the little boys.

Chen Cui did not stop them, nor was she worried that they would notice something.

No one knew how many times she had slashed the wolf's body with her knife. There were so many wounds that it was impossible to see its original appearance and it was impossible to determine the real cause of death.
