Traveling through ancient times: living a different life
Chapter 24 Summer Harvest Begins
The rustling sound outside came into Biyue's room from the yard.
She took out the alarm clock in a daze and saw that it was just past 5 o'clock and it was daybreak outside. She was still young, so she turned over and fell asleep again.
The alarm clock woke Biyue up at seven o'clock. It was already bright outside, but the sun had not yet come out and there was still a slight chill in the air.
The three siblings began to exercise in the yard.
After half an hour, go wash up.
She entered the room, walked to the dressing table and sat down, combed her hair, tied it into a high ponytail, then braided it around her head to make a bun, wrapped it with a pink ribbon and inserted a small pearl flower, turning into a beautiful little loli.
The two brothers placed the food on the table in the main room, including steamed buns, millet porridge, pickles, and five boiled eggs.
Bi Yue asked, "Brother, are the two younger brothers awake yet?"
"I just watched it, and I'm still asleep!"
So the three of them started to eat breakfast
While I was eating, I heard the door open. My second uncle came back with bags of rice on a ox cart. He piled all the rice in the yard, and then drove the ox cart to the fields.
Biyue wanted to check the fields before the sun came out, so she threw the bowl away and ran out.
When Tingwei saw his second sister running away, he also trotted out to chase her.
Tingsong ran to the gate and saw that the brother and sister were almost gone.
I couldn't go with them because the elders in the family were busy working in the fields, and my two younger brothers were sleeping in the house.
So he shook his head helplessly and went to see if the two little guys had woken up.
Bi Yue turned around and saw her third brother following her, so she slowed down and the two of them walked forward together.
I saw busy figures along the way.
Whether pulled by ox carts, carried in backpacks, or loaded on small carts, it was all rice.
From afar, I could see the center of the village. There were many people on the large flat ground. Near the large flat ground, there were bamboo mats spread on the ground with grains drying on them.
The two men walked over and squeezed in front to see a strong man standing in front of a large rectangular wooden barrel. He grabbed the rice stalks with both hands and placed the rice ears in the barrel. There was a roller-like thing in the barrel with small wooden teeth on it. When he stepped on the outside, the roller started to turn, and the grains in his hands fell off from it and into the barrel. This was the ancient thresher.
The two looked for a while and then walked towards their own fields.
Along the way, I saw farmers busy in the fields, their happy faces showing the joy of the harvest, but the sweat on their faces and bodies could not hide their mood at the moment.
Approaching their own rice fields, He Tingwei stood on the ridge and saw the family elders and hired helpers busy in the fields.
My father stood in front of the thresher, stepped on the pedal, and worked hard.
The second uncle moved the bags of threshed and bagged millet onto the ox cart one by one. He filled the whole cart and prepared to take it home. He walked a few meters away from them before he saw his eldest son and little niece.
"Why are you here? It's so hot, just take a look and go back!"
"Got it, Uncle."
"Got it, Dad."
After the two kids agreed, they wanted to go to the fields to take a look.
It is now around 9 o'clock in the morning. The sun is hanging in the sky, shining brightly. There are no clouds around. It shines on this field of hope. The temperature is gradually rising. After sunbathing for a while, I can feel sweat on my face and body.
When we came to the open space where the harvest had already been completed, we saw a lot of straw piled up on the ground.
Bi Yue left in a hurry and didn't bring a backpack or basket. She had no way to put the rice ears she wanted to pick up. How much could one pair of hands carry? Forget it, she would do it in the afternoon.
Dad saw the two little kids in his field from a distance and didn't say anything.
Biyue walked over and saw that her father's face was covered with sweat and he didn't even bother to wipe it off. He was wearing a coarse cloth jacket, long pants, cloth shoes, and a straw hat on his head.
My father is 1.73 meters tall, with bronze skin, regular features and a pair of beautiful eyes, which make him look handsome. Except for my father who was threshing, everyone else was harvesting rice quickly in the field.
If there were a harvester, these twenty or thirty acres of land could be harvested in half a day. But this was in ancient times, and it was all physical work, like an ant moving house.
Although we cannot move the farming tools from previous lives to ancient times, we can draw a simple thresher or sheller, which can help reduce the burden on the family and make people feel more relaxed.
"Why are you in the fields on such a hot day? Are you here to help or to have fun?"
"We want to help, so we can pick up rice ears."
"There is a bamboo basket next to the haystack. Go ahead. I'll go back with you two in a little while."
"Okay grandma."
The two younger ones went to get baskets and picked up rice ears in the fields.
Bi Yue looked at the furnace-like weather and forgot to bring a hat when she went out. It was very hot after being exposed to the sun for a while.
So I also made a wreath out of branches and put it on my head, which could block out the sun a little bit. Hehe! I am so smart.
Fourth uncle came pulling an empty cart. Under his bamboo hat on the cart was a wooden barrel. Next to it was a basket with a few bowls and a ladle. Fourth uncle took down the wooden barrel, placed it in the shade under the straw, and asked everyone to come and drink some mung bean water.
When the rice harvesters heard this, they all came over one after another and stood beside the rice straw to drink the mung bean water.
After drinking two or three bowls, he went back to work.
The two little ones each picked up a basket and brought it to their father.
The father asked them to drink something, but they refused and ran to check for more. After a while, they were too hot to handle. So they rested in a cool place.
Biyue looked around to see if there was anyone around. She turned her back to Tingwei, took out two orange-flavored popsicles, handed one to him, and ate one herself.
Bi Yue is now less and less avoiding the third brother. It's such a hot day, does she have to go without eating? It will be so uncomfortable.
Half an hour later, around ten o'clock, grandma came over from where they were harvesting rice, took the two children back, and prepared to cook lunch, so the three of them went home.
