Reborn Daughter: The Young Lady Wants to Make a Trouble
Chapter 414 Under Her Control
Mrs. Gebening covered her mouth with a slap, her eyes widened in horror, and her fingers trembled uncontrollably, but her reaction was much more elegant than that of her peers.
She was suddenly glad she hadn't eaten breakfast yet. Unfortunately, the other maids weren't so lucky. They were either retching beside her or already vomiting. Some fainted, but luckily a maid helped them up.
"This, this is horrible..." One of them choked out a sob, but a second later she looked away. The sight was unbearable. Her stomach churned, and she threatened to spit out the morning tea she had drunk a few minutes ago.
"I can't stand this..." she added, turning her back on the person she once called a friend.
"How could the prince be so cruel?" another maid asked, covering her mouth with a handkerchief. She finally finished vomiting and wrinkled her nose in disgust.
Madam Ge Bening gritted her teeth and said, "The prince is not cruel, so he has won the points for taking action."
As soon as she said this, Mrs. Ge Bening regretted it. Her palms were wet. When she saw Xu Jiaqi's broken body, she walked forward even more cautiously.
"What I mean is..." She tried to regain her composure. "The prince is just a doting husband. Any man would protect his wife."
"This does not justify this protection..." someone said.
Mrs. Ge Bening didn't dare turn around and face her friends. She really didn't want others to see the look of fear on her face.
In the eyes of others, she seemed to be shocked by the punishment Xu Jiaqi received, but that was not all. She was afraid of facing the same thing.
Mrs. Ge Bening touched her smooth face. It was bare, yet more dazzling than any other woman here. She swallowed. The mere thought of being disfigured like Xu Jiaqi gave her goose bumps.
"How long are we going to stand here?" someone asked.
Madam Ge Bening pursed her lips and glanced around calmly. There were more eunuchs today than usual, presumably to allow the palace maids to stay here a little longer.
“Catch a big fish and hook it up,” she muttered, knowing the trick.
Mrs. Gbeining swallowed. The smell in here was too rotten—especially with the contents of a human stomach just a few steps away from her.
"Not for long," Mrs. Ge Beining replied. "Mrs. Xu is one of our cherished friends. Let us help her escape her suffering and let her rest in peace."
"Really?" someone repeated, "Mrs. Ge, you speak as if it were the past tense, as if Mrs. Xu is already dead..."
Mrs. Ge Bening's eyes glared. These traitors were actually still able to attack each other at this moment. She gritted her teeth, her nails digging deep into her palms.
Mrs. Ge Bening suppressed her emotions, turned around, and forced a smile, but that smile never reached her eyes, which revealed a hint of impatience and anger.
"Mrs. Han, don't you think we should focus on helping our dear friends? You certainly wouldn't be so cruel as to find fault with others when our dear peers are suffering?"
Madam Han shrank back. As always, she couldn't argue with Madam Ge Bening. It wasn't that she didn't want to, but because Madam Ge Bening had one of the most powerful backers in the palace—the Queen herself.
How wonderful it would be to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth and a bright future ahead of you… Not everyone is lucky enough to have a mother who is good friends with the Queen herself.
"I think we should not touch Madam Xu..." Madam Han finally said.
Mrs. Ge Bening tried not to glare at them. What cowards! They spoke kindly to Mrs. Xu Jiaqi, but when their friend fell, no one helped her up. Did that count as treating them as allies?
If Xu Jiaqi had not acted so hastily and without the support of other palace maids, perhaps she would not have ended up like this.
"Mrs. Han, what are you talking about? Xu Jiaqi has a close relationship with all of us. This is what we can do." Mrs. Ge Beining stretched out her hand and gestured to the motionless woman.
She added: "Can't you see that by putting her out there on display, you're victimizing her twice?"
"But Madam Xu is not dead." Madam Han was a little puzzled. Why did Madam Ge Bening seem to insist that Madam Xu was dead? It was just like -
"Madam Han is right," said another maid, "The Queen only ordered us to keep a good lookout for Madam Xu, lest we be foolish enough to harm the Crown Princess."
She paused, then quickly said, "We dare not harm the gentle Crown Princess."
Mrs. Ge Bening was furious. She used to be so strict, but now these women were acting recklessly, turning a deaf ear to her words and acting recklessly. It was all because of Xu Jiaqi's current behavior. These women were too timid, and she looked down on them.
“I don’t need them anymore,” she thought angrily. “They can’t even be trusted as comrades.”
For some reason, her temper flared up. She wasn't usually like this. Her forte was calmness.
Mrs. Ge Bening must have been terrified by Xu Jiaqi's appearance. Her mind was in a state of confusion, and she was afraid she would take a wrong step and fall. Now she knew that these women would definitely be happy to see her fail.
"You can't even help each other, and yet you dare to call yourselves maids?" Lady Gbenin asked softly. She tried her best to restrain herself, but she wanted to curse at them for their cowardice.
"Well, we serve the Queen." Madam Han explained slowly, as if talking to a child, "and the Queen didn't specifically ask us to help Xu Jiaqi down."
"You speak as if Madam Xu is no longer our Madam Xu," said Madam Ge Bening impatiently. She tried her best to ignore the betrayal before her eyes.
This was bound to happen. Mrs. Gerbenin had been prepared for it. Now that she had experienced it herself, she realized she wasn't as prepared as she had initially thought.
"She has committed a heinous crime," Lady Han said haughtily, a sinister smile playing on her lips. "I don't think the Queen will treat her as a maid anymore. We all know how much misfortune our dear Queen has endured."
"Yes, but-"
"Madam Xu deliberately created such an incident...it must have brought back unpleasant memories for our beloved Queen. Madam Ge, do you think you can forgive her sin?"
Mrs. Gbeining's eyes burned with rage. Sometimes, she wished her eyes could kill. If they could, these women would be dead, and no one would bother her anymore.
In the past, these ladies-in-waiting would listen to her every word, thinking it was the best advice. But now, they didn't even listen.
"Don't you think that among friends, the most honorable thing is to let her get proper treatment?" Although they obviously didn't want to look at Xu Jiaqi any more, Mrs. Ge Bening still said slowly.
Madam Ge Beining prided herself on being different. Unlike them, she actually had a heart. Xu Jiaqi had once been her friend. Madam Ge Beining wouldn't abandon her peers so quickly, even if their lives were a complete failure...
"Her sins are so grave that she won't tolerate this," Madam Han said quickly. "Besides... the prince might even punish us for bringing her down."
The maids then began to discuss in low voices. Mrs. Han's words suddenly made more sense. Everyone finally witnessed the prince's cruelty.
Before this incident, no one dared to go against him...but now, no one dared to go against the eldest princess.
Everyone except Mrs. Gerberning had arrived. "Okay then." She sighed softly, placed her hands on her chest, and looked at them with obvious disappointment on her face.
"I think we should at least pray for Madam Xu and hope she recovers soon."
"Oh, it took me a long time to recover from this beating. If I had recovered, I would have hanged myself." Mrs. Han muttered.
Mrs. Gbeining bit back her words. Now was not the time to lecture these women, especially since her control over them was weakening. She needed to give them some encouragement, to get them back under her control.
