Quick Wear: Passerby A's Daily Life of Eating Watermelons
Chapter 4: A stranger in the spy world of the Republic of China
Jiang Yue made a rough plan for her future. She looked at the time and it was already dark. There was a clock at home but she didn't have a watch to tell time. She should remember to buy a watch or pocket watch tomorrow. She went out and found the driver that Mrs. Chen had specially left to drive the car. He was guarding the door at the gate. Jiang Yue went over and told him to lock the door when no one was around at night and find a room on the first floor to stay in.
After that, she went back to her room to sleep. The next morning, she got up early, washed up, and changed into a shirt and long skirt. When she left, the driver asked if she needed him to take her. Jiang Yue said, "No, I'll just walk around nearby. I won't go far."
The driver opened the door for Jiang Yue. Jiang Yue looked around. All the shops nearby had flags and signs hanging on them. There was also a shed at the door. There were also children on the roadside saying, "Newspapers for sale, bags for sale, the latest declaration."
Jiang Yue waved to a little newspaper boy and asked, "How much is a newspaper?"
"Seven copper coins each, do you want it?"
Jiang Yue took the newspaper and looked at it, then asked the newsboy, "Do you know No. 32 Sibei Road?"
"Do I know where my sister lives?"
"I'll give you two dollars a month. Can you deliver it to my house every morning?"
The newsboy nodded excitedly: "Sure, sure."
Jiang Yue gave him one dollar as half a month's expenses, and asked the newsboy where the grocery store was, and also inquired about which restaurant nearby had good food.
The newsboy showed Jiang Yue the way, and even took Jiang Yue to have a look around because he was worried. He said the food in these restaurants tasted better, and also mentioned which grain stores had genuine goods and reasonable prices. After that, he went to deliver the newspaper to Jiang Yue.
Jiang Yue went home after breakfast and asked the driver to take Jiang Yue to the place where his original father was buried. Although his daughter was already dead when Jiang Yue arrived, it would not be excessive to pay tribute to her after all, as she had occupied someone else's body.
After Jiang Yue returned home and took a short rest, she went to the grain store and ordered some more grain to have it delivered to her home. She then went to the foreign company next door and saw iron barrels for water. She bought a few wooden barrels and iron barrels, as well as the kind of packaging boxes used to hold rice in movies and TV dramas. She saw that they had three layers. After paying the money and leaving her address, the store delivered the goods to her door.
Jiang Yue went to a Chinese medicine store. She had never seen a Chinese doctor before. When she went in and didn't know what to do, the pharmacy clerk came up to her and said, "Hello, Miss. Do you want to see a doctor?"
Jiang Yue nodded, and the waiter led Jiang Yue to sit next to the doctor. Jiang Yue put her wrist on the pulse pillow, and the doctor asked Jiang Yue to change her hand. Finally, he said, "Did a relative pass away, girl? The pulse indicates excessive grief, which may harm the body. If the relatives have passed away, the living people should live well and not dwell too much on the past. They should look back."
After that, he prescribed some medicine for Jiang Yue, wrote down the method of decocting the medicine on a piece of paper and handed it to Jiang Yue. Jiang Yue sorted out his thoughts and said, "Doctor, do you have any Chinese patent medicine that you always have at home? I want to buy some for future use."
The doctor looked at Jiang Yue and didn't make any recommendations for her. He just said that Chinese medicine should treat symptoms and that if she had any problems, she could just go to the pharmacy. The main reason was that Jiang Yue didn't know much about medicine and had no idea about it, so she couldn't clearly express what she wanted.
Jiang Yue sighed, and without saying anything more, she asked the doctor again: "If I want to learn Chinese medicine, what should I do?"
"You can go to a traditional Chinese medicine school. Many schools are accepting students now. If you are interested, you can try. There is one nearby."
Seeing that Jiang Yue was quite interested, the old doctor said to her, "It's not easy for women to study. Schools only teach the basics of Chinese medicine. When you graduate from school, you will need to find a master to guide you. Many masters do not accept women as apprentices. You must be mentally prepared."
Jiang Yue came out of the clinic and went home without taking a look around. After he rested for a while at home, the grain store delivered the food that Jiang Yue bought. Jiang Yue specifically asked for the rice and flour to be divided into two portions when buying them, so when the food was delivered, a bag of rice was divided into two parts, half a bag each. After the food was delivered, he found out that they did not provide bags for delivery, and he had to buy the sacks for the rice himself, but if he bought a lot at one time, they would definitely give it to him for free.
The staff from the grain store originally wanted to pour the money into the rice container at Jiang Yue's house, but they didn't expect that they didn't have any new ones. In the end, they could only ask Jiang Yue's opinion to see whether they should buy the bag as well or keep it first and send it to them later.
Jiang Yue thought about it and decided to buy the bag. It was useful anyway. It could hold other things besides rice. Seeing Jiang Yue paying, the staff in the grain store readily agreed. After putting the grain in the bag, they went downstairs and pushed the cart home.
Jiang Yue looked around and saw nothing was there. With a wave of his hand, he put the extra rice into the space, and put a few iron buckets and wooden barrels in the space. Jiang Yue put the remaining rice in order, called the driver over, took him to the kitchen to take a look, told him about the rice container, and mentioned some of the things that were missing. The driver knew where to buy them.
So he drove Jiang Yue to a place that specialized in selling kitchenware. There was a wide variety of items on sale. Jiang Yue spent a long time choosing. After she made her selection, she didn't have to carry them herself, as they were all delivered to her home.
After buying the things, I didn't go home. I asked the driver to drive Jiang Yue to a traditional Chinese medicine school near my home. After consulting her, I found out that it was very easy to enroll now. I just had to pay the tuition. However, the next class would start in two months. There were no new classes now, so I talked a lot. After asking Jiang Yue and finding out that she had no basic knowledge at all, I arranged her into the new class.
Jiang Yue followed the school teacher to complete the admission procedures. After asking, she found out that she didn't need to live in the school and the school didn't provide meals, so she had to bring her own meals or eat at home. Finally, she went to the registration office to pay the tuition, which was paid once a semester. After paying, Jiang Yue was given a receipt, which was similar to a notice, and she could come to class on the same day.
It was almost noon when she finished school work. Jiang Yue asked the driver to take her to a nearby restaurant. Seeing that there were still many people, she thought the food should be good. After entering, she ordered two dishes for the driver. The driver initially refused, but Jiang Yue said, "Maybe we need to go shopping in the afternoon. We will be energetic after we are full."
Seeing Jiang Yue say this, the driver sat down to eat without saying much. Jiang Yue also ordered two dishes, which came up after a while. After eating, Jiang Yue asked the driver to take her to a high-end tea house. She planned to buy some gifts to visit the Chen family. Buying gifts would also make it seem more formal and thoughtful.
I spent the whole afternoon shopping and bought a box of tea and two bottles of wine. The driver told me that many people buy wine as gifts nowadays, so I went to buy some nutritional supplements for Mrs. Chen. Finally, I went to a watch shop and bought two watches, one for myself and one for the heroine as a gift tomorrow. After I got home, I wrapped the gifts and was thinking about when to go to Chen's house when Mrs. Chen called.
"Xiao Yue, I've found an aunt for you. I'll have the driver take you there this afternoon. My daughter will be back from school tomorrow. Do you want to come? Let me introduce you to each other. You two sisters can go out and play together when you have nothing to do."
"I understand, auntie. I'll go there tomorrow morning."
The two chatted for a while and then hung up the phone. Now there was no need to think about finding a special day to go there. They could just go there tomorrow.
Not long after Jiang Yue was drinking tea, she heard a car horn outside. Jiang Yue walked out the door and a woman in her thirties came in. She was wearing a blue coat and carrying a bundle. When she saw Jiang Yue coming out, she called out to her, "Hello, Miss."
“No, no, just call me Xiaoyue.” Jiang Yue waved her hand: “Just call me Xiaoyue when no one is around.”
After chatting for a while, Jiang Yue learned that her aunt's name was Zhou Guifang, her husband died early, and she had a daughter who was already in school and lived with her mother-in-law and had not remarried. Because of her family's cooking skills, she now makes a living by cooking for wealthy families. This time, it was Mrs. Chen's aunt who introduced her to Jiang Yue because she knew that she had no employer recently.
Aunt Fang asked Jiang Yue what kind of food she liked. Jiang Yue said she liked all food as long as it was delicious. Aunt Fang smiled and wanted to cook a few dishes for Jiang Yue to try. However, Jiang Yue said that she had just moved in two days ago and there was no food at home. She took Aunt Fang to the kitchen and saw a pile of kitchen utensils that had just been delivered and had not been put away yet.
Originally, Jiang Yue planned to clean up with Aunt Fang, but Aunt Fang refused, saying that it was her job. She poured Jiang Yue a cup of tea, asked her to sit in the living room obediently, put down her bag, and went to the kitchen to clean up.
