My Little Pony: Another World Adventure
Chapter 17: Changes in the Forbidden Forest
"Freshmen, we will go to the first greenhouse for class today."
Professor Sprout said, looking visibly annoyed. Latan thought it might be due to Lockhart's rambling about how he had ingeniously detoxified a slow-acting poison with a few willow roots during his trip to Running with the Ghouls.
It was hard for Latan not to notice that several girls around him seemed to have suddenly suffered from severe allergies. Their entire faces turned a tomato-red, and they stared at Lockhart's face without blinking, as if they were under a petrification spell.
The fan effect is a terrible disease...
Just as Professor Sprout untied a wooden key from her waist and opened the door of the first greenhouse, Lockhart reached out to stop Latan who followed the others in and said cheerfully, "Latan! I've been wanting to talk to you - Ms. Sprout, you don't mind if he's two minutes late?"
When Dante saw the expression on the red-haired giant's face, he couldn't help but burst out laughing, and he quickly covered up the laughter with a cough.
Minamoto Kiyotaka pushed him by the shoulder and walked into the greenhouse, then turned around and said with a smile, "We'll wait for you inside."
Professor Sprout said nothing, but from her expression it was clear that she minded. But Lockhart said, "Great!" and slammed the greenhouse door in her face.
"Latan." Lockhart shook his head in an affectation, trying to make himself look deep and wise. The red-haired giant was almost blinded by the sunlight reflected from his big white teeth. "Latan, Latan, Latan."
Latan felt his eyebrows wrinkled involuntarily. Out of respect for his elders, he reluctantly said, "What's the matter, Professor Lockhart?"
"It's okay, it's nothing serious, don't be so nervous, kid." Lockhart obviously misunderstood what Latarn meant by clenching his fists. "I understand that the photo with me at Flourish and Blotts that day gave you a taste of fame. But no matter what, becoming famous by fighting is not a wise choice. If it were me -"
"You mean," Latan leaned forward, staring at Lockhart's face without blinking, "that I had a conflict with Virgil Sparta last night over my reputation?"
"Virgil? Oh, so that's his name?"
Lockhart smiled. "It's okay, kid. You don't have to pretend in front of me. I can see at a glance that we are actually the same kind of people. Are you interested in being my assistant? Our team can be called 'The Brave and Fearless Gilderoy and His Little Giant'. This will bring you fame and fortune, which is a lot of money--"
"Professor Lockhart." Latan interrupted Lockhart's monologue for the second time, "I want to reiterate one point - I am not interested in either wealth or fame. The fight last night was only to help my friend."
"That's right! That's the attitude of disdain for fame and fortune!" Lockhart applauded vigorously. "Aloof and domineering men, this is a new trend. You will be a great success! There are a lot of girls willing to spend money on you!"
It's really strange. Even though Lockhart is so thin, he managed to make Latan feel like he was communicating with a troll.
"If you have nothing else to do, I'm going to class." Latan straightened up and said indifferently, "Professor Lockhart, I'm glad you can't understand anything more difficult than gossiping. Goodbye."
He turned, bent down, and went into the greenhouse, leaving Lockhart standing there alone, wondering whether the words were a compliment or sarcasm.
"Hey, our big star is back." Dante looked at Latan, who looked like he had eaten too many guava seeds, and joked, "How is your communication with your agent? When do you plan to release a work for us to admire?"
(Note: Guava seeds can easily cause constipation.)
"Professor Lockhart is amazing, isn't he?" said Colin. "I mean, look at the stuff he writes in his books. I'd be terrified if I were trapped on a sinking boat with a ghoul, but he keeps so calm... it's amazing!"
Minamoto Kiyotaka suppressed his laughter: "Hmm... the story told by Professor Lockhart is very interesting."
"So what did you talk about?" Ginny asked curiously.
"Was fur eine Zeitverschwendung (German: What a waste of time)..." Ratan muttered, and then said to Colin, who was looking at him with longing eyes, "I hope you can still keep this idea after you finish the Defense Against the Dark Arts class tomorrow morning."
"Alright, kids!"
When the bell rang, Professor Sprout clapped her hands, attracting the attention of all the students. When Lockhart was not present, she looked so kind and gentle, like the old grandmother in the neighbor's house who would make cakes for you to eat.
Unlike Lockhart, Latan had no problem with her calling him "child".
She said: "Herbal medicine is a subject that requires love and concentration. In my class, you will learn how to plant and cultivate these magical plants and fungi. You will feel the pulsation under the soil, the roots and stems are growing vigorously, and the spores are blooming like fireworks. Now turn to page 13 of the book, and let's learn about several common fungi in combination with real objects..."
She took out one clay pot after another from under the podium. In each pot there was either a piece of half-rotten wood, or some smelly offal, or just pure soil. But without exception, they were all full of mushrooms of various colors and shapes.
"Can anyone tell the difference between the non-toxic Amanita and the highly toxic Amanita?" Professor Sprout asked. "Hint: the answer is in the book."
Seeing that others were flipping through books, Latan immediately raised his hand and almost poked a hole in the shed.
"Mr. Magnus?"
"The gills of the non-toxic Amanita are flat, the stem is hollow, and there is no spherical body at the base of the stem; the gills of the highly toxic Amanita are gradually tapered, the stem is solid, and there is a spherical body at the base of the stem."
"Excellent," said Professor Sprout cheerfully. "If flies and slugs are fine eating Amanita, can humans eat it?"
According to the standard answer in "A Thousand Herbs and Mushrooms", Latan said: "Don't eat them blindly. You must observe the fungus carefully. Because some Amanita mushrooms are non-toxic to insects, but they are extremely harmful to humans."
Colin lowered his voice and exclaimed, "Is Latan such a good student?"
"That's nothing." Ginny said with a sense of inexplicable pride, "He had memorized all the textbooks when he was still living in my house."
"Excellent, Mr. Magnus. Twenty extra points for Gryffindor." Professor Sprout said with a smile, "Please take a seat."
"I can just stand, Professor." Latan looked down at the round stool that was not even half the height of his calf, "It probably can't bear my weight."
"Even an English toilet can't withstand your German bombardment of it." Dante said in a low voice, and the students around him laughed at their textbooks.
"Then you will have to work harder in this class. I will tell Hagrid and ask him to make a chair suitable for you." Professor Sprout looked at Latan kindly, "Okay, students, let's take a look at this red mushroom. Does anyone know... uh, Mr. Magnus?"
If the herbal medicine class was not only half an hour long, Latan could recite the chapter on mushrooms in "One Thousand Herbs and Fungi" word for word in class.
The entire class was spent almost entirely on Professor Sprout's questions and his answers, with occasional voices of uncertainty from a few Hufflepuff students.
"Today's homework."
When the bell rang, Professor Sprout, the head of Hufflepuff, looked at the students of her college with disappointment: "Briefly discuss what you have learned today and write a ten-inch paper. I must remind you that Mr. Magnus's answer can already be used as a reference for you - turn it in next class."
"Professor McGonagall is going to love you, buddy," Dante said, patting Latane's arm as they walked out of the greenhouse.
"We earned 60 house points in one class!" Ginny's ears turned red with excitement. "We Gryffindor have definitely won the house cup this year!"
A blond Hufflepuff student muttered, "Megalomaniac..."
"I think this is a kind of self-confidence." Minamoto Kiyotaka opened his golden eyes and stared at the Hufflepuff. "But you, Anakin Skywalker. You'd better read more books, otherwise you will hesitate for a long time and still not be able to answer a single word next time."
Latan glanced at the Hufflepuff with a strange name. In the magnetic field vision, there were no systematic small light balls in this person's body, but... the magic fluctuations in his body were very strange, and he didn't feel like an ordinary wizard.
The system-less traveler that Elena mentioned?
Anakin Skywalker was speechless for a while after being confronted by Minamoto Kiyotaka. He gritted his teeth, hugged the book to his chest, and said to Latarn: "Next class, I won't let you take the limelight alone!"
It’s great that someone finally understands the joy of learning!
Latarn patted Anakin's shoulder with satisfaction and said earnestly: "Read more books. It will be good for your body and mind."
"You!" Anakin was furious and turned away without looking back.
Ratan asked curiously: "What happened to him?"
Doesn’t studying hard just mean reading more books?
"You sounded too much like Percy just now. You should use a more tactful way of saying it," said Ginny. "Like, 'We can work together', or something like that."
Latarn tilted his head and said in confusion: "But I am telling the truth."
"Sometimes, the truth hurts more." Ginny said in a patient tone that explained that one plus one equals two, "So when communicating with people, you need to choose the right words."
Latan thoughtfully said, "So even if Dante is an orphan now and Minamoto Kiyotaka was born without parents, the three of us are quite suitable to be Batman in Gotham City. This cannot be said."
"Hey!" Dante shouted in dissatisfaction.
"You've already said it." Minamoto Kiyotaka covered his chest with his hands, looking very hurt.
"Look!" Colin shouted, holding his camera. He hadn't heard a word. "Hagrid's back!"
The Hogwarts gamekeeper strode out of the Forbidden Forest, looking gloomy, with his thick eyebrows drawn together, a huge crossbow in one hand and a dead polecat casually swung by the other.
Seeing Latan and his group greeting him, Hagrid concealed his worry, a big smile bloomed on his face, and said in a loud voice: "Good morning, little guys!"
"Good morning, Hagrid." Latan looked at the dead polecat. A faint purple-black gas was emanating from its body and blending into the air. "Is this the prey you killed?"
"What? Oh, no, of course not. It died of disease, you see." Hagrid leaned the crossbow against his legs and tore the polecat in half with his bare hands. A large piece of diseased innards fell on the grass, still wriggling ominously and emitting purple-black gas.
The key is that there is no smell of rot or spoilage!
Colin raised his camera and took pictures of the internal organs on the ground. Ginny covered her mouth and her face turned slightly green.
"This disease is very prevalent in the Forbidden Forest recently," Hagrid said, showing the cross-section of a polecat to Latan. "The animals have become manic, irritable and aggressive. Look at these fractures and bruises, all caused by them fighting. It's as if they can't feel pain. When the injuries accumulate to a certain extent, they die."
