"What's so surprising?"

The young knight glanced at his comrades who were in disbelief.

Only then did the old soldier react. While everyone else looked pale, the knight actually looked even stronger.

I originally thought that it was because the young people were in good health or they had some privileges behind them, but the veteran didn't expect it to be this privilege.

But the veteran had never thought about it in this direction. After all, the knight had talked to him about ideals, noble ladies, and how he had lived and eaten with Doug Lars. He wanted to kill the enemy and get promoted. No matter how you looked at it, he didn't seem like an insider.

The veteran even suspected that he was the accomplice and did not expect that the Cavaliers would be the accomplice.

"You know what? I feel like my beautiful wife is actually an old lady after taking off her makeup."

"Where is the aunt?"

The old soldier imitated the knight's tone and said, "Don't ask that."

"Ok."

The knight shrugged and said, "I know where the supplies are. I can take you there at night."

Everyone in the room quickly accepted this reality. Once they accepted this setting, they even felt that surrendering to the enemy didn't matter.

As soon as the thought of surrendering to the enemy arises, the world becomes wide open in an instant.

"Compared to this."

The old soldier asked, "When did you become an insider?"

"Guess why the higher-ups don't allow people to go out on patrol now?"

By the evening, the old soldier finally understood what the knight's answer meant.

The figures moving around at night were not the gray-collar scouts or special forces, but other insiders in the Pétain defense line.

The knight even greeted the insiders very naturally, and then led everyone to a corner.

"This is it, the fixed 'meal pick-up point'."

Before the knight could finish, the old soldier and the other soldiers burst into tears and began to eat voraciously.

After they finished eating, the knight did not rush to take the old soldier back, but asked: "This is different from what you had before, do you know what this means?"

"of course."

The old soldier wiped the corner of his mouth and said, "Tell me, when do we start?"

"In about three days, before we start fighting, we will be given weapons. By then, everyone will have grey strips wrapped around their arms. Those with grey strips are our people."

"Are you so eager already?"

The old soldier looked at the high walls of the fortress behind him. The Pétain Line in the dark night really looked like a hopeless barrier, making it impossible for people to have the slightest desire to attack.

"That's right. Originally, I wanted to wait until the last day to confront you."

The knight explained: "This is not urgent anymore. There are really not many supplies left in the fortress now."

“Were they really all sold?”

Although the old soldier was a little surprised, he could still accept it. After all, Lars' army had seen many outrageous things in the past.

"Yes, I was in charge of it."

The knight lowered his head slightly, his eyes revealing undisguised disappointment and some anger.

Hearing this answer, the veteran suddenly understood why the young knight who once told him that he wanted to kill the enemy, wanted to be promoted, and even thought that Doug Lars would promote him, suddenly became an insider.

Three days passed quickly, and on the night before the uprising, the old soldier touched the musket in his hand and sat in a corner with the knight waiting for dawn.

"Look at the workmanship and the materials. This is a weapon."

Every veteran has a special feeling for his weapon, but when the gray-collar weapons are issued to the veterans, they abandon their old friends without hesitation.

"No wonder that small place was able to defeat Governor Doug. Now it seems that Governor Linde is the real master of the North."

The veteran was not joking. Looking at the musket in the knight's hand that was exactly the same as his own, the veteran with rich combat experience had understood many things. Although he had no concept of quality control, compared with the weapons made by the alchemists on Doug's side, the veteran could see the difference at a glance.

"I feel like we surrendered to the enemy too late. I know a few of the people who were given weapons. They disappeared while they were patrolling at night. I didn't expect they really surrendered to the enemy."

"This is not called surrendering to the enemy, this is called abandoning darkness and surrendering to light."

The knight sat quietly holding his weapon. He no longer had the sharpness he had when he talked with the veteran before the battle. He even became calmer than the veteran.

Although the scene of the weapons distribution was very quiet, some noise was inevitable, but the soldiers in the fortress turned a blind eye to it.

This fortress closest to the gray-collar workers is basically filled with the lowest-level soldiers. Although they are usually inconspicuous, they are very familiar with this fortress and even this defense line. Several irrelevant soldiers who wanted to shout loudly or leak secrets were controlled. The rest were either traitors or soldiers who just wanted to watch the fun.

After all, most people were too hungry to struggle. Everyone just wanted this weird life with different rules to end quickly, no matter which side won. Some people even joined the uprising that night. After all, at least they could have a full meal that night.

"What do you want to do when this is all over?"

The knight looked at the moonlight and started talking to the old soldier. But before the old soldier could answer, the knight said to himself, "I want to go find the guys I used to play football with and play a couple more games. It would be best if I could find the old lady next door and apologize to her."

But the old soldier covered the knight's mouth before he could finish his words, and said, "Pooh, pooh, pooh, it's taboo to say such things on the battlefield. Generally, those who say such things won't live to see the next day."

The night ended in a commotion

The commander-in-chief of the Pétain Line began a meeting concerning the life and death of the Pétain Fortress early in the morning in the deepest and strongest fortress on the line.

"Commander, there has been something wrong with my soldiers recently. They only eat one meal a day, but they don't look hungry at all. I suspect they have all turned into traitors."

A knight looked worried, as his men seemed to be getting less and less obedient recently, but the others didn't care much. After all, with rumors all around, which soldiers would be willing to obey? Besides, some of the things were not rumors.

"Knight, you are wrong to say that."

The deputy commander next to the commander-in-chief said, "My soldiers and I are well fed. Am I also a traitor?"

The commander-in-chief also comforted him, "Knight, you are too sensitive. The food I distributed was carefully calculated. How could there be a situation where people are starving?"

The knight who raised the question was speechless for a moment. After all, every batch of food distributed would be taken away when it was handled, and there was not much left in the hands of the lower-level soldiers. Is there anything he can say about this?

“And that’s not the main issue anymore.”

The commander-in-chief patted the map on the table and said, "Our supplies have been cut off. We can no longer defend this line of defense. We must find a way to break out and join up with Lord Doug's other troops."

"Isn't it a bit late now?"

The knight who had just stood up continued to speak: "All the cities that supported us have been taken down. Where can we go after we leave the defense line?"

Before the knight could finish his words, the sound of artillery fire was heard outside.

The commander-in-chief's eyes lit up. Was the enemy going to attack? Although the supply to the Pétain Line was cut off, all facilities were functioning normally. As long as they could win, they might even be able to capture some of the enemy's soldiers in exchange for food.

But at this moment, a guard ran in in a panic, shouting, "Commander, it's bad, the soldiers are mutinying!"

"what?"

The commander-in-chief was panicked for a moment. He came here to command because he heard that the Pétain Line was indestructible. His actual level was better than Keith, but not much. Usually, the affairs of the fortress were mainly handled by the deputy commander.

Thinking of this, the commander-in-chief turned his head and looked at the deputy commander.

"Deputy Commander, what do you think we should do now?"

The deputy commander looked calm and said, "Don't panic, Commander. I have a plan that can resolve this situation."

The chief commander did not notice anything wrong when the deputy commander suddenly started to speak in a flowery manner, and even joined in by speaking in the ancient common language: "Speak quickly."

The deputy commander took off his cloak in front of everyone and waved it. On the back of the cloak was embroidered a northern wind bear, which was the family crest of the old Lars. Not only did Doug not use it anymore, he even forbade his men to continue using it, because it was the emblem still used by the gray-collar rebels.

"Your Excellency, Commander, please offer your head!"
