Chapter 8: Searching for Food, First Time in the Mountains

I was groggy all night and didn't sleep well. I woke up at dawn. Xiaobao was sleeping beside me very obediently. But Dabao was sleeping with only half of his body on the bed, with one foot on the ground.

I got up quietly and prepared to make something to eat. If I didn't make something to eat, I would probably die. Just as I was about to get out of bed, Dabao woke up;

"Mom. What are you going to do? I'll help you do it."

"Then let's build a stove and cook something this morning. After we eat, we can go see if there is anything else to eat."

"Mom, wait a minute, I'll be there soon!"

Dabao turned around swiftly, opened the door and went out. Not long after, he heard the sound of stones being moved coming from the side room next door that was secured with bamboo strips. When he looked over, he saw that Dabao had already built the stove.

"Dabao, go to the clan leader's house and borrow a knife so we can have potato soup this morning."

"Mom, do you want a knife? Wait for me."

After saying that, he turned and ran away. I didn't know what Dabao was going to do. I ignored him and picked up the pot and walked to the river. I washed the pot first so that it would be useful later. Fortunately, the house was not far from the river, so it was very convenient to use water. The river water was very clear. I found a stone to step on. As soon as I put the pot in the water, I saw a few small crabs next to it. This thing is good! It's a pity that there is no pepper and no oil, otherwise it would be delicious if I stir-fried it.

After cleaning the pot, I turned over the rocks and caught about one or two pounds of small crabs. I washed them, peeled them, threw them into the pot and brought them back. Although there was not much meat, it was enough to fill my stomach. Moreover, crabs are expensive in modern times.

I lit the fire and steamed the crabs, and stewed three potatoes in the fire. Xiaobao also got up by himself.

Go wash your face and hands and get ready to eat.

Mom, I understand. My brother is back.

I looked up and saw Dabao running towards me quickly from the morning mist with a wood-chopping knife in his hand. He was walking fast with a slight blush on his face.

"Mom, I left this knife on the mountain yesterday. I got it back today."

"Well done. Wash your hands and wake up your brother. Let's eat something first! After we finish eating, let's go around the area and see if there is anything to eat and bring some back."

After telling Dabao, I went to the stove, dug out the three potatoes buried in the fire and put them aside. The two children got up and washed their hands and faces. The potatoes were almost cool, not so hot. I gave one to Dabao and one to Xiaobao. I also took one and peeled it, and told the two children: "It's a little hot, peel it and let it cool before eating. Don't eat too much crab, it's cold in nature, and eating too much may cause stomach upset."

I ate a potato and a few crabs! I finally felt better. I told Dabao and Xiaobao to pick up some firewood nearby, and I walked away with the hatchet. I wanted to see if there were other opportunities. Otherwise, I didn't know what to eat tomorrow.

The air in ancient times was really good, and it seemed that the sky was much bluer than it is now? Fortunately, this body has been working for a long time, so climbing mountains is no problem. Soon I came to the mountain. There was nothing near here, and the villagers had already picked it up. I decided to go deeper to see if there was anything better.

After turning a few hills, I found a large patch of wild dandelions next to a trickling stream. This is a good thing, it can be used for cooking and medicine. There are even a few bitter buckwheat plants next to the dandelions. Never mind, I'll pick them first.

I quickly gathered a lot of them. How could I take them home? I tied them up, but they would all get tangled when I got home. I looked around and found a cane tree. I took a knife and cut some canes. Thanks to the hand-weaving I learned in my previous life, I was able to weave and practice at the same time. After half an hour, I had woven a decent backpack.

I put the dandelion sprouts and buckwheat in the backpack, filling it up. I need to find some flour so I can make bread. It's delicious, healthy and anti-inflammatory. These are hard to find in modern times. I looked up at the sky and saw it was getting late. I picked up the backpack, put it on my back and walked back the way I came.
