A Farm Girl Traveling Through Time: Raising a Stunning Husband
Chapter 141 Dealing with Weeds
After the shelf was finished, the sun was not too strong, so Shen Wu cleaned the shelf and put it in the sun to dry, then told Gu Zhou that he was going to weed the field.
Gu Zhou had already made preparations and placed the hoe behind the door of the main room.
After returning to the house and saying hello to his younger sister, the two of them went out with their farm tools.
Shen Wu didn't quite understand why Gu Zhou wanted to take the hoe, but he followed him anyway. He took the machete and carried a backpack.
Shen Wu walked in front, glanced at the sun which was already setting in the sky, and estimated the time. It was around 4 o'clock, a good time to work.
As she walked, she was thinking about what to plant next year. She couldn't remember it at the moment, but in autumn, her family would eat winter melon, pumpkin, and sweet potatoes!
"Be careful!" Gu Zhou stretched out his hand and pulled her back when she almost stepped on air. He felt a little helpless. She really didn't look like a monster or something.
When Shen Wu was pulled back, he realized that he had reached the edge of the field and almost fell into a small ditch on the side of the road: "Thank you, I didn't notice."
Gu Zhou asked: "What are you thinking about so intently?"
Shen Wu had nothing to hide, so he went down to the field and started weeding. "I was thinking about what we should eat this season and what we can plant next year."
She didn't continue with the rest. To be honest, this was a fictional dynasty, and she didn't know if some food was available at the moment. Besides, the environment here was completely different from the great plains where she had lived for decades. Many times she had to think carefully for a long time before she could find the corresponding method from her confused brain.
Gu Zhou then pulled out a handful of weeds that were only as high as his little finger, thinking about what he would plant in previous years: "It would be wheat or some vegetables."
He knew that she might not understand why they did this, so he continued to explain: "The seasons here don't change that much. Sometimes we're unlucky and need to stock up on more frozen food, but most of the time we can make it through. But this year is different. This year here is really..." She hesitated for a long time, and then confirmed that there was really no one around before continuing in a low voice: "Maybe it's because we made a profit?"
He went on to say, "My father passed the imperial examination and was favored by the emperor because of his achievements in government. He has long been exempted from land taxes and public grain. Our family has less than two acres of land, so it's good enough to be able to provide food."
"We only have one season's worth of wheat to grow, and the rest of the time we'll grow some food for the winter."
"I see." Shen Wu quickly pulled out all the grass around him, turned around and said, "I want to make more dried bamboo shoots, dried vegetables, dried radishes and other things this winter. Do you think it's okay?"
"Why not?" Gu Zhou wondered why she asked for his opinion.
"...Well...after listening to what you said, I think it will not work if we only prepare those things. When the radish harvest comes, we have to dry them quickly while there is sunshine. If we only use dried bamboo shoots or something, the winter will be difficult."
She was so confident that Gu Zhou wondered how he had survived for so many years. Was it hard? It was okay. He was used to it.
Seeing that he remained silent, Shen Wu quickly added: "I have never experienced the winter here, so it is better to make more preparations, so that you will not be left with nothing to eat when the time comes."
"There will definitely be food if you put it down." Gu Zhou was particularly firm when talking about this. In fact, he was not sure either. He was just the pillar of the family, and he had to reassure his younger sisters and brothers whenever he did anything.
With his words, Shen Wuxin was completely relieved and began to concentrate on pulling out the weeds in the field.
These days, not only have the millet seedlings grown to be almost as tall as a person's calf, but the radishes have also grown tassels. After the heavy rain, the weeds in the fields have been growing like the wind, and in some places they are almost as tall as the crops.
The two men squatted in the field and worked hard. Fortunately, the water had settled down a lot, and the ground did not suck their shoes when they stepped on it, leaving only a few centimeters of shoe prints.
Shen Wu lowered his head until he was too tired, then he stood up to rest. Looking back, he found that he had already pulled out most of the grass and would soon reach the end.
Gu Zhou was much faster than her and had already finished one-third of the work in another grid.
Shen Wu looked at the four trees that had not been pulled out yet and sighed deeply. It was cool now and it wouldn't be too late to go back after working until dark.
Thinking of this, she squatted down and continued to pull out the weeds.
-------
When they were tired, they took a break. When the sun was about to set, Shen Wu suddenly remembered that he needed to go back quickly.
In ancient times, there were no lamps like we have today. The light from the oil lamps was very small, which was fine for making clothes, but it was really difficult to cook.
"Gu Zhou, let's go back," Shen Wu said as he walked to his side somewhat unsteadily.
After stewing for too long, my legs became so numb that I almost fell down when I walked.
"I'll work on it for a while longer. If you're tired, go back first," Gu Zhou said to her without getting up.
"It's going to be dark soon. We've worked for the whole afternoon. Let's go back and take a rest. I'll make you some meat soup in the evening," Shen Wu advised.
Gu Zhou shook his head and was unwilling to leave: "You go back and cook first, I'll do it for a while. There are still two and a half pieces of space. It's okay for me to go back after dark."
He actually wanted to say that he didn't need to have dinner, but since she came, dinner at home has become a fixed schedule.
Seeing how persistent he was, Shen Wu stopped trying to persuade him. She just told him to go home early and not walk after dark, and she walked and skipped along the ridge of the field towards home.
She was still a little worried about the two children. Although she had experience in taking care of younger siblings in modern times, this was ancient times and the babies were too young, so Shen Wu was still a little worried.
She hurried home and washed the wet mud on her hands. There was still some residue between her fingers, but the watch was definitely clean. She didn't care about the residue between her fingers for now, as she could just pick it out with a needle later. She went to check on the two children first.
It wasn't that dark outside, but it was difficult to see in the dark room. Shen Wu took a tinder, lit the oil lamp in the main room, placed it on the table, and quietly looked into the room.
The two children huddled together, chattering about something, which puzzled her.
Wait, two kids? Together? What?
She suddenly realized that it was her little brother who was speaking, and those unpronounceable words were her little brother.
She excitedly stepped forward and shouted, "Gu Wei! My little brother can speak now!"
Gu Wei turned around and was very happy to see Jiang Yu had come home, but she was puzzled that she didn't know her younger brother could speak: "Sister Jiang Yu, weren't you there when my younger brother spoke last time?"
"Ah? When?" Shen Wu suddenly realized that it might have happened before he came here, and quickly made up for it: "Hahahahaha, didn't I remember it? I thought I was the younger brother who could speak."
When she reminded Gu Wei of this, she remembered what Sister Jiang Yu had forgotten, and she felt very sorry: "I... I forgot... I'm sorry, Sister Jiang Yu."
"It's okay, it's okay." Shen Wu touched Gu Wei's head and comforted her. In order to prevent the child from continuing to feel guilty, he quickly changed the subject: "What did your little brother just say? I didn't understand."
