Tianlong Temple is located in the north of Zhongyue Peak of Cangshan Mountain outside Dali City. The official name of the temple is Chongsheng Temple, but the people of Dali are used to calling it Tianlong Temple. It has Cangshan Mountain on its back and faces Erhai River, and has a very beautiful location.

The temple has three pagodas, built in the early Tang Dynasty. The largest one is more than 200 feet high and has 16 levels. There is an iron inscription on the top of the pagoda that reads: "Built by Yuchi Jingde in the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty." According to legend, Tianlong Temple has five treasures, and the three pagodas are the most important of the five treasures.

The ancestors of the Duan family who were emperors often abdicated and became monks in Tianlong Temple. Therefore, Tianlong Temple is the ancestral temple of the Dali royal family and the most respected temple in the country. After each emperor became a monk, his descendants would go to the temple to pay homage on his birthday. Every time they paid homage, they would make donations and decorate the temple.

The temple has three pavilions, seven floors, nine halls and a hundred buildings. It is large in scale and exquisitely constructed. Even among the famous mountain temples in the Central Plains such as Wutai, Kaiyuan, Jiuhua and Emei, there are few that can compare with it. It is only because it is located in remote southern border that it is not well-known.

This Tianlong Temple was a place Duan Zhengming often visited. After the three of them arrived at the temple, they went straight to pay a visit to the abbot, Master Benyin.

If Master Benyin were arranged according to the secular generation order, he would be Duan Zhengming's uncle, but monks do not follow the etiquette of ruler and subject, nor do they follow the generation order of family members, so the two met with equal courtesy. Later, Duan Zhengming introduced Fang Muye and Duan Yu to Benyin.
