Chapter 20: The Beam Raising Banquet
Lin Xijin looked up and saw several carriages had already entered the gate. She hurried to meet them. It turned out that the owner of the pharmacy, the restaurant and Shangguan Rui had arrived together.
Lin Xijin didn't expect Shangguan Rui to come, and she didn't invite him specifically. She just thought that the waiter in the restaurant had been helping her buy vegetables, so she told the shopkeeper.
The two shopkeepers ordered their assistants to take out the gifts from the car, which were mostly some porcelain, screens, boxes and other utensils. They also handed over a big red envelope.
Shangguan Rui finally took out a contract and handed it to Lin Xijin, who was a little puzzled.
"Miss Lin, this is the indenture of the coachman Liang Derong. You also need someone to accompany you, so let him follow you from now on!"
What does it mean to give a gift that touches the heart? Shangguan Rui is that person! He is indeed a man with high emotional intelligence! Lin Xijin gave Shangguan Rui a thumbs up.
Lin Xijin expressed her gratitude to Shangguan Rui. But she was not a domineering person, and was afraid that Liang Derong would not be happy with her, so she asked him first.
Liang Derong was right next to him. Usually Lin Xijin was kind to others and never acted like a boss. The food at home was delicious, and there were often snacks such as fruits, candies, and cakes. How could he not want to eat? When he heard Lin Xijin asking for his opinion, he quickly agreed.
Lin Xijin called the clan leader and Uncle Mu Xiong, and asked them to take Shangguan Rui and others to visit the winery, pharmacy and the wasteland outside, while she continued to work at the big stove.
"Jin girl, the house you built is so wide that you brothers and sisters won't be able to live in it with a room each!" Aunt Mu Xiong joked.
"Aunts, you can come and stay here at any time. We've reserved a room for you." Lin Xijin also answered jokingly.
"We won't come to stay here. Jin girl, I have something I want to ask you. My boy Xingwu wants to come here to practice martial arts and learn to read with Xihui and the others. Do you think it's feasible?"
The two aunts from the clan leader's family nearby also echoed and said, "Our Xingwen and Xingcheng have been with Xihui and the others recently. When they come home, they don't play around anymore. Instead, they use wooden sticks to write and count on the sand table! Jin girl, don't despise them. Let them learn something from your little ones. You can teach them as well. In the future, your aunts will help you with your housework."
"That's great. Let them come over after the training ground is leveled. Training is hard, so don't feel bad for them, aunts."
"Don't feel bad, don't feel bad. These guys are tough, just let them practice."
The aunt next to them was also moved. Lin Xijin told them that anyone who was willing to endure hardships and learn martial arts could come. After discussing with the clan leaders and elders, the clan school might be established in the spring of next year, and by then the children would be able to read and write.
Everyone laughed happily and looked forward to the future more.
Everything was ready. A row of wine tables were set up in front of the door, filled with adults and children.
The food was served, full of meat that the villagers could not even eat during the Chinese New Year. The sound of swallowing saliva could be heard one after another. The younger children were already clamoring for meat, but no one dared to pick up their chopsticks until the chieftain spoke. They were afraid that if they did not follow the rules, they would be kicked out by the chieftain and miss the opportunity to eat.
Lin Xijin took the lead in picking up the wine bowl, and Xihui and Xijia followed suit.
"Grandpa, uncle, and all the elders: Jin'er, my brother, and I would like to toast you all today! Thanks to everyone's enthusiastic help, the three of us have been able to get through this period smoothly. Everyone has also worked hard to build our house and reclaim land, and has considered everything for us. The three of us are extremely grateful. Today, we have prepared a simple feast and invite everyone to have a drink. Everyone eat and drink well!"
"Thank you, Miss Jin, for the big feast. Thanks to you, we can have such a good feast in this life!"
"Jin girl is a good person. Thanks to her, we will have meat to eat in the future." The clan leader stood up and said, "Let's all wish them today: May they build a beam for generations to come, and may the land be blessed with auspiciousness. May the auspicious star shine brightly, and may they be rich and prosperous forever."
The craftsmen and villagers also followed suit and congratulated loudly: "The beam has been erected for generations, and the blessed land is auspicious. The auspicious star shines brightly, and wealth and prosperity will last forever."
Everyone picked up their wine or tea bowls and drank it all in one gulp.
Then the clan leader shouted, "Let's feast!"
All the sounds seemed to have been paused, replaced by the sounds of dishes colliding and people chewing.
With Xihui and Xijia holding tea bowls, Lin Xijin went to each table to toast. Everyone said words of congratulations and he expressed his gratitude one by one.
Just as I was paying my respects, I saw another strange scene.
The step-grandmother Jiang, her son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren sat at a table. Lin Musheng and the two children were wolfing down their food, but Jiang and his wife were not in a hurry to eat. Instead, they were busy filling their backpacks with food, explaining to everyone, "His grandfather didn't come home, so we packed some food for him."
In the end, there were only a few chopsticks left in each bowl, and the group ate and drank ravenously, finishing the food in no time.
Jiang signaled her daughter-in-law to pick up the backpack and leave. The daughter-in-law and Jiang Musheng ran away like the wind. Jiang stood up slowly, and while wiping other people's tables, she grabbed a big steamed bun with one hand and ran away like the wind.
The two children did not run away, but watched others eat.
Still, Grandma San couldn't bear to see the two children suffer so much that she gave each of them a piece of fish. Only then did the two children leave in displeasure.
Later, I heard from the aunt who received the gifts that the Jiang family came empty-handed, and they said with confidence that they were visiting their own home and did not need to bring any gifts.
Everyone was thinking about the big day, so they didn't bother to argue with her. Who knew she would do such a shameful thing. Because according to rural customs, guests are not allowed to take away the host's things when they put up the beam or move into the new house.
These are all trivial matters and Lin Xijin doesn't care at all.
The banquet was so lively that it was beyond words. There were so many dishes and the villagers were so full that they ate until their bellies were full. Although everyone was polite and did not take the wine and meat away, they were reluctant to leave any, so they ate all the food on the table.
