Chapter 31 Old Town
Dorne is the least populated of the Seven Kingdoms. Due to the great migration of the Rhoynar in history and the relatively isolated environment, the Dornish are obviously different from the other Westeros people in culture and race. The Dornish have adopted many customs of the Rhoynar on the basis of their original Andal people. The Dornish are known for being hot-blooded and sexually open. Dorne is also the hottest area in Westeros. It is rocky, mountainous, dry and barren, and has the only desert on the continent. The land in the area where the river flows is fertile, and there is enough rain and other water sources even in the long summer to ensure that Dorne is still suitable for human habitation.
The capital, Sunspear, is built of brown mud and straw (like the adobe bricks common in northwest China). It is located at the easternmost end of a small sandstone peninsula, surrounded by the sea on three sides. It is adjacent to Shadow City to the west. The triple curved wall surrounds the castle and winds through Shadow City. The three gates arranged in sequence provide a convenient way to the inner city. Visitors can directly pass through the triple curved wall to the Old Palace without having to detour through the maze-like town. The Spear Tower and the Sun Tower in the city rise from the Old Palace, representing Martell's spear and Rhoynar's sun respectively. The dark brown Sandship Castle was originally the family castle of the Martell family before Nymeria landed in Dorne, and is now part of Sunspear. Its appearance resembles a large sailing ship that was washed ashore and turned into stone.
The Shadow City in the west is called the Outer City in Chinese terms. It extends westwards based on the huge curved wall of Yangji City. The south is connected to the port. A large number of mud brick shops and windowless houses are attached to the city, some of which have their own walls. New houses are attached to the walls of their neighbors. This is repeated year after year, and Shadow City has reached its current size.
The merchant ships of Celtigar stopped here to replenish the daily necessities on board. They would rest here for one night. Most of the houses in Shadow City were built with mud bricks, which could keep cool even under the scorching sun.
Although the Dornish call it a city, its size can only be regarded as a strange and simple town at most. Stables, inns, taverns, and brothels with complete facilities are further west. The narrow streets and alleys in the city are intricate and look like a maze. Spices from Dorne and the eastern continent are sold everywhere in the market area. Liu Yuan saw dark-skinned people, who are said to be natives from a place called the Summer Islands in the south. As for the locals of Dorne, Liu Yuan felt that they were more like Turks who believed in the church and retained a lot of nomadic traditions and customs. The majority of Dornish people are a mixture of the ancestors, Andals, and Rhoynar. On the mainland, Dornish people are divided into three types: Sand People, Stone People, and Salt People. Stone People mostly live in mountainous areas and are tall. They are descendants of Andals and the ancestors, and most of them have brown or blonde hair.
The Sand People who live in the desert and the Salt People who live by the sea have inherited the slender physique of the Rhoynar, with smooth olive skin, black hair, and dark eyes. The Dornish are resolute and brave. The Targaryen family launched countless wars, using all means including dragons. It took more than 180 years to bring Dorne under the rule of the dynasty. But it was not done by iron and fire, but by two carefully arranged marriages, plus a solemn treaty that guaranteed the title and privileges of the prince of Dorne and respected the local laws and customs of Dorne. So other families are dukes, and only the Martell family is a prince. Dorne has since maintained a close alliance with the Targaryen family, and the Martell family has always firmly supported the royal family when the kingdom rebelled.
Liu Yuan also took a good stroll in the market under the protection of the sailors. This young master was very generous! All the rewards were silver coins. For the sake of silver deer, the sailors and guards rushed to serve Liu Yuan. Liu Yuan also experienced the addiction of a dandy boy, leading more than 20 big men to follow him. Many vendors looked at them with horror, thinking they were here to rob, and even attracted the city garrison.
But Liu Yuan was generous and spent a lot of money. He bought many strange things, including mineral colored stones, strange plants, and weird animals, all of which he had never seen before. The girls in Dorne were exposed and fiery, and they blew kisses to Liu Yuan. There was also the only slave market in Westeros. Of course, the slaves bought here became lifelong servants in disguise after leaving the city.
After delivering all the purchased items to the inn, Liu Yuan gave each of his followers three silver deer as a reward. Then he returned to his room to study the miscellaneous items he had bought today. The sailors who received the merchant money went to the taverns and brothels further west to spend money.
The merchant ship set out the next day, sailing on the Summer Sea, where the sea mines were completely different from the Narrow Sea and Blackwater Bay. The sea water was azure blue, and even the sea breeze was warm. Liu Yuan saw a group of gray-white dolphins chasing and playing with the ship. And the number of ships passing by gradually increased, indicating that the ocean trade here was quite prosperous.
On this day, Liu Yuan could see a large number of seabirds gathering on the right side of the ship. Gradually, the land appeared, and many ships were sailing towards it. Seeing his confusion, the captain explained, "Master Garon, that is the famous Qingting Island. The island is the most famous brewing center and shipbuilding center of Vivistler, and those ships are going there for trade."
Lady Una had taught them on Crab Island that the Arbor was the territory of the Redwyne family. It was under the rule of the Reach and was separated from the Westeros continent by the Redwyne Strait.
The Arbor is one of the richest regions in Westeros, and its wine is world-famous. Fleets from all over the south bring fresh fruits here, and the Arbor has unique winemaking techniques, which produces extraordinary fruit wines that are much sweeter than those in other places. The Arbor also has a unique golden wine that can be called one of the most expensive wines in the world.
The small islands near the Qingting Island, such as Stone Crab Reef, Pig Island, Mermaid Palace, Horseshoe Rock and Wild Seed Bay, have a large number of docks built on them. This is the largest shipbuilding center in Westeros. Countless caravans from the north continuously transport high-quality timber from the north to here, turning them into countless ships.
The endless flow of wealth allowed the Redwyne family to support one of the best fleets in all of Westeros. The "Redwyne Fleet" firmly guarded the Arbor and protected the Redwyne family's huge wealth.
Crossing the Qingting Island, continue north to the Whispering Bay. The Mead River flows through the Old Town and flows into it. The Three Towers Castle and Black Crown City guard both sides of the bay. It is already approaching dusk. From afar, you can see the towering lighthouse at the river mouth. The bright light guides the direction of these ships.
There is the famous towering tower, the home of House Hightower, one of the most powerful noble families in the Reach. It is both a castle and a lighthouse, located on the Battle Isle in Oldtown, where the Mead River flows into the wide estuary of Whispering Bay, and a blazing fire burns day and night at its highest point.
