Restart the Disaster of Another World

Chapter 9 Road Construction

After returning home and tidying up, Jing Yao took out the garlic he had just bought. When he bought it, he found that the garlic had already sprouted and grown roots. He thought of buying it and planting it, and adding some to the dishes in the future. So he decided to plant the garlic now.

He first went to the backyard to find a place under the grape vine trellis and started to turn the soil and dig holes. Wen Qun followed him and broke off the garlic cloves one by one as he instructed. After he dug the holes, he put two or three cloves in each hole. He then filled the holes with soil, watered them thoroughly, and waited for them to grow freely.

There wasn't much, and with two people working together, they finished planting everything in less than a quarter of an hour. There were only four rows, occupying a small corner of the land.

After packing up the tools and entering the house, I saw Wen Qun fiddling with the pepper plants. The trees were full of fruits of various colors, which looked very beautiful. No wonder they can be used as ornamental plants.

I said something to spoil the mood: "Do you like it? I'll pick two and stir-fry them for you later."

Wen Qun glared at him, but he nodded anyway. He knew Jing Yao bought it to use as a spice, and he also wanted to taste what this red fruit tasted like.

Seeing that he agreed, Jing Yao went to get a chicken. He had prepared the ingredients and put them in the space, so he could take them out whenever he needed them. He started to prepare dinner, thinking about the recipe he remembered and preparing to make spicy chicken.

Wen Qun took the chef's position and listened to him talk about the various auxiliary materials. Jing Yao prepared everything and chopped the chicken. Then he took out the recipe and told it to Wen Qun again. Fearing that he would not remember it, he put the recipe aside so that he could look at it at any time, and then went to light the fire.

Wen Qun remembered it after listening to it once. He asked Jing Yao about the amount of chili pepper to be used and then started to cook it. Except for the fact that the chili peppers choked a little when they were put into the pot, everything else went smoothly. After a while, a spicy chicken with good color, aroma and taste was ready.

Wen Qun cooked a few more dishes, and Jing Yao told him while he was lighting the fire which dishes would taste better with chili peppers and how to cook them. When the rice was cooked, they started eating.

For the first time, the fragrant smell of rice wafted through Jing Yao's room. Looking at the little guy scooping rice and setting the table, he finally understood why people say "a wife, children and a warm bed" is a great happiness.

Wen Qun had experienced the power of chili peppers when he was cooking, and he was even more cautious when eating. However, he still felt the spiciness on his first bite. Jing Yao had already prepared orange juice for him to relieve the spiciness, but when he saw his pitiful appearance, he quickly handed him the cup.

Wen Qun relied on orange juice to survive and barely ate a little. But for Jing Yao, it was just slightly spicy. He hadn't eaten spicy food for a long time and Wen Qun was a good cook, so he ate three big bowls before giving up.

After dinner, the two of them cleaned up again. Jing Yao found some soybeans and soaked them. He knew that Wen Qun was curious, so he prepared to make it again to show him. This way, his curiosity would be satisfied, and after five or six days, he could add another delicious dish.

After finishing his work, it was already late. Jing Yao had to send his young husband back to his father-in-law's house. He was very unhappy just thinking about it. But for Wen Qun's reputation, he had to hurry up before it got dark.

Jing Yao also took some black tea he bought today and sent it to Wen Xing.

It was still early and some families had just started cooking, while those who had eaten early had just started eating. Along the way, people teased Jing Yao and Wen Qun when they saw them. Jing Yao was thick-skinned and didn't seem embarrassed, so he smiled and teased them. Wen Qun was a little shy and followed Jing Yao closely.

Jing Yao's house was not far from Wen Qun's house, and it took almost ten minutes to walk there. When the two of them entered the house, they didn't see anyone there. When they walked to the backyard, they only saw Grandma Chen in the kitchen cutting vegetables.

"Mother-in-law, you are home alone." Wen Qun asked.

"In the morning, my son-in-law took so many wild animals and couldn't finish them, so the master asked my wife to send some to her parents' home. My wife thought that she hadn't been home for a long time, so she took the young lady and the young master with her. Sister Li also went to take care of them. The master was the only one at home, so she told me not to rush to cook and to wait and see when the third young master comes back." When Granny Chen saw that everyone had returned, she prepared to go in and cook.

Wen Qun thought his father should be in the study, so he took Jing Yao there. When they reached the door, he did not go in, but picked a few peppers and went to the kitchen. Jing Yao knocked on the door and went in.

When Wen Qun arrived at the backyard, Granny Chen had already prepared all the dishes. Wen Qun went over and took them over and said, "Let me do it, Granny. You go back and have a rest."

Wen Qun's cooking skills were all taught by Granny Chen. When he was little, he was not very favored by his mother. Apart from his father teaching him to read and write, he spent his time doing needlework at home. He was so bored that he went to Granny Chen to learn cooking. Unexpectedly, he was so talented that he can be said to be better than his mother.

Granny Chen had to go back to take care of her son who was paralyzed in bed. Seeing Wen Qun's words, she agreed, packed up her things, washed her hands and left. She also told Wen Qun, "After dinner, go to the kitchen and don't worry about it. I will come to clean up tomorrow morning."

Wen Qun nodded. Jing Yao had told him about several dishes today, and he was very interested in them all. He was ready to try them now. Because there was no Dayu for chili peppers, Jing Yao wanted to make a business out of it, so he had to keep it secret. That was why he wanted to try it by himself.

Wen Xing saw Jing Yao coming in with a pot of flowers and thought he bought it for Wen Qun. He smiled and said, "You bought it for Qun Qun, why are you bringing it to me?"

Jing Yao put the chili pepper on the table. "This is not a flower, it's a spice used in cooking. I bought it at the dock and brought it back from Luo Ou."

"Spices?" Wen Xing was quite interested. He looked carefully and saw a small tree-like plant in the pot. It had green leaves and red and yellow-green long fruits. It looked very lush.

"Well, Qun Qun is cooking in the kitchen. You can try it later, father-in-law." Wen Xing is knowledgeable and often attends social events outside. Jing Yao wants to use his taste to test the acceptance of chili in Dafeng.

Wen Xing raised his eyebrows and said, "You want to grow this spice."

Jing Yao nodded. "More than that. Planting, purchasing, making, and then selling the finished products."

Wen Xing was silent. He didn't expect Jing Yao to think so far. "If you are so confident, you will be unpopular among the people."

“Everyone has different tastes. Some like sweet, some like sour, and I’m sure some people like spicy.” As a modern person who loves spicy food, he understands the charm of chili peppers too well. If he is asked to choose only one flavor of food, he will choose spicy without hesitation.

Wen Xing did not comment on Jing Yao's confidence. Changing a country's eating habits is not something that can be accomplished overnight. Not to mention that they are just small farmers, even if they are royal relatives and nobles, it will take time for them to change slowly and imperceptibly.

“Of course not everyone can accept it all at once, but if it can be accepted by some people it will be an incalculable fortune.” Jing Yao does not have such big ambitions. He is content with a small fortune, and he can also afford to be much richer. The important thing is that spreading this kind of food will make people happy.

"Yes, I once read an article in a book that talked about people in a certain place who liked to eat all kinds of insects and worshipped them as gods. It shows that everyone has different tastes." Wen Xing nodded in agreement.

"That's quite unique." Jing Yao agreed.

The two discussed about the local delicacies. Jing Yao had never been to far places in this world, so his knowledge was limited. Wen Xing had traveled to many places for study when he was young, and his students were from all over the place, so he had more knowledge. Most of the time, he talked, and Jing Yao guessed about the places and flavors based on his own modern life.

It was not until Wen Qun came to call them to eat that they stopped talking as they were still unsatisfied.

"Father, Brother Jing is ready to eat!" Wen Qun moved quickly and had already cooked several dishes.

"Let's go and try this pepper." Wen Xing took Jing Yao out.

When the two looked at the table full of dishes, they were a little surprised, "How did they make so many?"

“Just now, Brother Jing told me about several dishes that are all made with chili peppers, so I made them all. But I was afraid that my father wouldn’t be used to them, so I made a few without chili peppers.” The portion of each dish was not large, but the quantity was huge.

Because Wen Qun and Jing Yao had already eaten, they were actually just eating with Wen Xing. Jing Yao had a good appetite and also ate a bowl of rice, and Wen Qun just wanted to taste the food.

"Father, try this dish." Wen Qun put the plate on Wen Xingdao. It was a dish of stir-fried pork with peppers. The authentic method used green peppers, and some people also added black beans. Wen Qun tried his best to improve the recipe under limited conditions. He had just made it at Jing Yao's house and it tasted good.

Wen Xing tasted the pepper and surprisingly liked its flavor. Since it was the first time he was cooked, Wen Qun used a small amount. Wen Xing ate it with gusto: "The flavor could be better. It's good. No wonder you recommend this pepper so much."

Jing Yao understood. Wenjiabao was built by the river. Although the main occupation of the people here is farming, they also fish and sell them in their spare time. It is inevitable that the humidity is high when living by the river for a long time. Many older people have rheumatism. Chili peppers are yang in nature. Eating them can remove moisture. Eating them in small amounts for a long time is good for the body.

Wen Xing loves peppers very much. When he asked Jing Yao in detail about the process of pepper cultivation, Jing Yao hesitated. He couldn't say that he didn't know either and had to go back to look up information. He could only say that he had to take his time and was still planning. He would tell him when there was some progress. Wen Xing didn't ask much. After all, it was a new species and came from such a faraway place. He would have to try more before he could grow it well.

Because he bought so many seeds, Jing Yao had to add another plan to buy land. Fortunately, time was not tight and the seeds would not be planted until next spring. The big thing now was that the road construction had already begun in full swing.

Shangqing Town has a southern climate and there is no heavy snow in winter. There has been no snow for several years. Even though it is winter now, the village head has decided to start construction.

At this time of year, it is the slack season for farmers, and many people in the town are looking for odd jobs. Although road construction is hard work, it is a rare job, and many people come to do it.

As the sound of firecrackers continued to ring out, the lively road construction project began. Since it was a major event for the whole village, only a few people refused to participate, and almost every household sent representatives to participate.

Those who did not have male workers also sent their daughter Shuang'er to stay behind to cook and help deliver meals.

The road construction was carried out in a division of labor. The road was built from the beginning of the day to the middle. There were two engineering teams, and each team divided the work into different parts. First, the roadbed was compacted, then gravel was laid, and then the road surface was compacted. None of these required any skills, just some strength. The most important thing was the stone slabs at the end, which were done by professional workers.

Jing Yao followed Wen Qin's team and moved wherever they were needed. Half a month had passed before they knew it, and about one third of the road had been repaired. The results looked very good.

"Jing Yao, put it down first and eat. The master will come to check in the afternoon. We have to finish eating early and go check to see if there is anything that is not done well." Wen Li walked towards Jing Yao while wiping the sweat off his face.

"Okay, we'll come again after we finish putting this one down." Jing Yao directed several people to lay a stone slab on the compacted roadbed. If these roads are well built, they will last for a hundred years without any problems.

"Good job, Jing Yao. It's only been half a month and you've already done a good job. The master has praised you several times and said you are a capable person." Wen Qin was excited as he looked at the paved road.

"These are not difficult. It's mainly because the master taught me well. And you've done well, haven't you?" Jing Yao is smart and hardworking. He just follows his master and learns. Besides, he has done all kinds of jobs in modern times, so it is easy for him to get started. Seeing that he learns so quickly, the master wants to take him in as an apprentice, but he is not interested in that and refuses. Wen Qin, on the other hand, seems eager to try, but he doesn't dare to, otherwise the head of the village will break his legs.

"That's right. Our progress is not slower than my father's. Now, we can shorten the time by a few more days. Now that the road is repaired, it will be much more convenient for us."

"Yeah." Because the wharf is behind Wenjiabao, there are many vehicles on this road every day. But due to the conditions, the transportation costs of many things are still quite high, and people suffer. If the road is better, many things can be transported out, which can improve the economy a lot.
