Chapter 111: Dyeing of cloth begins
What needs to be said has been said. Seeing Su Ling preparing to dye the cloth, Sha was not in a hurry to go back. Seeing Su Ling lift a can of blue liquid off the fire, she stepped forward to help, "Are you going to use this liquid to dye the cloth later?"
Su Ling carefully placed the liquid on the ground beside her, and then she said, "Yes, I have to try the dyeing effect of this dye first. If the effect is good, I can consider promoting its use in the tribe in the future."
Sha nodded to show her understanding, and then asked, "So what do we need to do next? Is there anything I can do to help?" She was happy to participate and hoped to share some of the work with Su Ling.
Although it could be done by one person, it would be great if there was one more person working together and they could also talk. Su Ling responded with a smile: "Thank you in advance. Next we need to boil the cloth in clean water. The purpose of this is to allow the cloth to quickly absorb water, remove the slurry, make it easier to color, and make the dyeing more even." After that, she put another can of water on the stove, lit the fire, and started heating.
When the water temperature gradually rose to about fifty degrees, Su Ling calmly immersed the cloth placed on the side into the water and began the process of boiling the cloth.
During this period, she did not stop at all, and kept pressing the uncooked parts into the water with a wooden stick to ensure that every part of the cloth was fully heated.
After the water boiled, Su Ling continued to cook it for a full two minutes before carefully lifting the pottery jar and the cloth off the stove.
Next, use a wooden stick to pick up the wet cloth from the pottery jar, carefully wring out the remaining water, and spread the cloth flat on the clothesline made of vines.
"Do we have to wait until the fabric is completely dry before we can dye it?" Sha asked curiously.
"That's right," Su Ling responded with a smile, "It's hot today, it won't take long to dry."
Su Ling continued to cook the remaining two pieces of cloth in the same way. When the third piece of cloth was hung on the vine, the first piece of cloth was almost dry.
"Now we can finally start dyeing the cloth! Let's move the dye outside first." Su Ling touched the first piece of cloth with her hand, nodded with satisfaction, and then spoke.
"Okay, so what should we do next? Isn't it better to just throw the cloth into the dye?" Sha asked curiously as she followed Su Ling.
"Well, that's the basic steps. However, before putting the cloth into the dye, you need to add a little salt to the dye." Su Ling answered without looking back, but seemed to guess that Sha would continue to ask, so she immediately added: "Adding an appropriate amount of salt can help promote a better combination between the dye and the fiber, thereby effectively increasing the dye uptake rate."
After listening to Su Ling's explanation, Sha nodded thoughtfully, indicating that she already understood the reason.
After the two of them moved the dye to the yard, they found that there was a lot of dye! It was half a can! Su Ling thought to herself: If I put the cloth in later, although the dye should not overflow, it might not be convenient to stir it, and it might even spill onto the ground.
So she ran to the backyard with Sha and moved the large stone jar that was usually used to store water.
Then, they started to pour the dye into the stone jars. After all the basic work was done, they could finally start dyeing the cloth.
Su Ling immediately walked to the clothesline, took down all the cloth hanging on it, and then gently put them into the dye vat to soak.
After the white cloth was completely submerged in the dye and soaked for about three minutes to fully absorb the color in the dye, Su Ling took the cloth out and placed it on the wooden stick at the mouth of the vat.
"It's really dyed blue." Sha said with shining eyes.
Su Ling didn't say anything. After the floating water on the surface of the cloth was drained off a little, she and Sha used wooden stakes and sticks to wring them dry, and then hung the colored wet cloth on the cloth drying rack.
Su Ling walked around the cloth again and again, her eyes fixed on the cloth in front of her.
The cloth was originally off-white, but after being dyed with blue pigment, it has now become a unique gray-blue tone. Although this color cannot be said to be particularly beautiful, compared to the off-white color it has always been, this color is indeed more vivid and eye-catching.
However, Su Ling was not very satisfied with the color. She felt that the blue should be darker so that it could completely cover the original gray color of the cloth.
It’s not that I don’t like gray after going to Su Ling, I just feel that if I dye it one more time, it will be a different color.
"The color is still not ideal. Let's dye it again after it dries." Su Ling shook her head and said softly.
Sha, who was standing nearby, heard her words and immediately expressed a different opinion: "I think this color is much better than the grayish white at the beginning!"
Su Ling smiled slightly, expressing her understanding: "Everyone's aesthetic standards are different. Some people like bright and vivid colors, while others prefer a more elegant and fresh style. This is normal.
After we complete this pigment experiment, the tribe will be able to dye a variety of colors. At that time, everyone can choose which color of cloth to use to make clothes according to their own preferences."
"Yes, in the future our tribe will be able to successfully dye cloth into various beautiful colors! So, do we have to dye the remaining two pieces of cloth in the same way?" Sha asked expectantly.
"Of course not, we want to dye these three pieces of cloth into different shapes and patterns!" Su Ling said mysteriously.
Sha blinked her eyes and said thoughtfully, "Is it the same pattern as the ones on the cubs at noon? How do you do that? Do you pick some flowers and bring them back for dyeing?"
Su Ling smiled and shook her head, took the undyed cloth from the clothesline, and said softly: "No, if you use flower printing and dyeing, it will take a lot of time. Printing and dyeing is okay for small pieces of cloth, but if it is a large piece of cloth, it will be too time-consuming."
As she spoke, Su Ling began to show Sha how to handle the cloth. As she did so, she explained in detail, "Look, we just need to tie the cloth in our hands like this."
Sha watched Su Ling's movements intently, and then joined in with great interest, helping to tie the cloth.
Before long, knots of varying sizes appeared evenly on the originally smooth cloth.
After that, the cloth is put into the dye vat, and the remaining cloth is processed using different knotting methods.
