In the book, I was fed by my sister

Chapter 44 Filling the Gap

The moon comes out at night.

Song Li got up gently, and while her sister was sleeping, she released a mysterious night-blooming vine.

The subtle sound of the door closing was particularly clear in the quiet night, startling the two cats to look towards her.

She walked lightly into the depths of the village, following the sound of frogs.

About a quarter of an hour later, she looked up at the crescent moon in the sky in confusion, took another deep breath, and tried hard to feel the barely perceptible smell of spores in the air.

The person she was looking for was not in the village.

Her spores will not fail.

Unless the spore-stained clothes are washed, or the person is not in the village.

Li Sanwan's case sounded the alarm for her, and made her realize that the trials of this era were not crude. There was a huge organization called "the imperial court" that enforced justice and sentenced punishments. Perhaps it was this organization that could find the truth after unravelling the mystery.

This forced her to be more cautious and not to be negligent in the slightest.

She was now extremely grateful that the man had taught her a lot of skills in terms of killing and covering up the traces.

Song Li returned home covered in night dew. She rubbed her body to warm herself up a little before crawling into the warm quilt.

Before the first ray of sunlight in the morning broke through the clouds, the two got up and started working.

Song Ran deftly added two scoops of water and half a bowl of rice into the pot, then put it on the stove and slowly simmered it.

The morning breeze blew gently, bringing a hint of coolness. Before the weather got too hot, the two of them came to the pond to dig mud to fill the hole. The hole looked small, but they dug four or five baskets of mud.

Song Ran wiped the sweat off his forehead with his sleeve and cursed: "A bunch of rotten assholes! You secretly dug my pond, ugh!"

After she finished cursing, she turned around and saw her sister staring at her. She wanted to reach out and touch her sister's head, but she saw that her hands were covered with dirt, so she smiled awkwardly and said, "Sister, cursing is wrong, Xiaoguai, don't follow suit."

In the year of severe drought, while no one from the Song family was at home, they dug a hole in their pond in the middle of the night.

When they returned to the village, the water in the pond had been drained and the fish in the pond had all rotted and stank.

The fields of more than ten households below were all nourished by the water from the pond. They were also the few rice fields that did not dry up that year.

My mother was busy with my father's affairs at the time and had no energy to find out who had done this evil thing. Anyway, no one admitted it, and in the end, the matter was left unresolved.

"Hey! Are you guys done? I have to go." Grandma Gu stood at the edge of the bamboo forest and shouted to Song Ran and the others:

Upon hearing this, Song Ran quickly replied, "Coming!" She packed her things quickly, then took out a net bag from home and poured all the frogs into it.

Grandma Gu carried two baskets of rabbit lanterns.

Song Ran carried the bag of frogs and helped Grandma Gu onto the ox cart.

When Song Ran got home, the porridge in the pot was already cooked to perfection.

She deftly scooped out two spoonfuls and put them into the wooden basin, then cut two large handfuls of green leaves and grabbed two handfuls of rice bran to prepare the first meal of the day for the chickens and ducks.

She mixed the ingredients together and brought them to the backyard. Watching the chickens and ducks eating with gusto, she had a satisfied smile on her face.

She returned to the kitchen, washed her hands, scooped a bowl of flour, and cracked an egg that she had just taken out from under the chicken's butt into it. She added appropriate amounts of salt and water and stirred it into a fine paste.

Then, cut a handful of green onions and sprinkle them in.

A little lard was added to the pot, and the entire big iron pot was instantly soaked in lard and became shiny.

Song Ran scooped up a spoonful of batter and gently poured it along the edge of the pot.

After a few breaths, the batter at the bottom of the pan solidified. She carefully lifted a corner of the pancake and gently scraped it along the edge with a spatula.

With a little skill and a gentle flip, a golden and tempting pancake is born. The pancake exudes the aroma of lard and the fragrance of chopped green onions, making people salivate.

"Little sweetheart, go pick a white cucumber."

Soon, Song Li came back with a fresh cucumber. Song Ran washed and peeled the cucumber, cut it into thin strips, and placed it on a plate.

Three large pancakes came out of the pan. They were golden brown on both sides, fragrant and soft. The thinner parts were a little crispy.

"Wash your hands and eat!"

Three golden and tempting pancakes, a plate of refreshing cucumber shreds, a small dish of sour cowpeas and a small dish of peanuts.

Song Ran tore off a piece of pancake and handed it to his younger sister: "Be careful not to burn yourself."

Song Li took a bite.

The pancakes have the aroma of lard and green onions.

Add some shredded cucumber or sour cowpea and it will have a different flavor.

"It smells so good!" Song Li ate with gusto, her cheeks puffed up.

Song Li's expression was the most pleasing to the cook. Seeing her satisfied expression, Song Ran felt a sense of pride. She asked gently, "What do you want to eat for lunch? Tell me."

"I love everything my sister cooks."

Song Li's answer made Song Ran laugh even more.

Song Li took two bites of the cake, then imitated her elder sister and slurped the porridge along the edge of the bowl.

After they had breakfast, Song Ran took the big hoe and Song Li took the small hoe.

Start digging a trench.

The river is less than a mile from the pond, and she borrowed a wheelbarrow from Grandma Gu to transport the excavated mud to the river.

A few hoes would dig a basket of mud, and the two worked until the sun rose high. When they looked, they found that they had only dug a ditch three steps long.

"Oh, we've reached this point today. If the two of us keep digging like this, it will probably take us half a month." Song Ran sighed.

The two men took the hoe home, and Song Ran went to the house where the mushrooms were kept.

Lift a corner of the curtain.

The day before yesterday, she picked some big mushrooms to make soup. Today, she saw that they had grown fatter. She estimated that in two days, these baskets of mushrooms could be taken to the city to sell.

"Knock knock knock", there was a crisp knock on the door, accompanied by a childish voice: "Sister Ranran! I'm here to return the bowl"

Song Li went to open the door and saw Li Zi standing at the door, holding a bowl in one hand and a woven bag in the other.

"What is this?" Song Li took a step back cautiously, only to see a pair of pointed objects sticking out of the woven bag, baring their fangs and claws.

Song Ran came over after hearing the sound and asked, "Why are you carrying a bag of river crabs?"

"Because... because my mother asked me to take it..." Li Zi said in a low voice.

When she came home last night, her mother saw her holding a bowl without a crack in her hand. When her mother asked about the origin of the bowl, she hesitated and finally, under her mother's questioning, she had to tell the truth about what happened at Song Li's house today.

"It's not like we don't have food at home. We just finished lunch and we're going to eat at someone else's house!"

"I don't know how much food you have secretly eaten to get this body of flesh." Li Zi's mother scolded.

"Why scold her? Having meat represents blessing. Our Li Zi is a lucky baby." Li Zi's father hugged Li Zi and said.

"Yes, the whole family depends on her. When others see my daughter, they think my family is a landlord."

Today, Uncle Li Zi got up before dawn.

Going up the river from Lihua Village, there is a bluestone beach where some river crabs are hiding under the stones.

When she woke up, she saw her father coming back from outside, carrying a bag of river crabs.

Her eyes lit up, she trotted forward, hugged her father and asked, "Daddy! Shall we eat crabs today?"

Li Zi's father said, "Take it to Song Li and the others."

After listening to Li Zi's explanation, Song Ran said, "You are just a child, how much food can you eat? You are so polite, take it back quickly."

"Hmm~" Li Zi refused, "Dad told me to give it to you. He also said that this crab won't last long. If it starts to bubble up from its mouth, you have to eat it quickly. Otherwise, it will die and won't taste good anymore."

Song Ran thought: This girl will probably go home and brag about everything. Their two families don't have much contact with each other, and she is probably afraid that her daughter will eat and drink too much at someone else's house.

Song Ran took the crab and said, "Okay, I'll take it. Please thank your parents and I for you. Li Zi, have lunch at our house today. After lunch, you two can go out and play together."

"No, no, I'm going home to eat. Sister Ranran, I'll come play with Song Li in the afternoon."
