The Koi Wife of the Prime Minister

Chapter 23: Calming down a storm

When Zhao heard the verdict, she felt sad.

She was not the mastermind, but she could not escape her responsibility. She deeply regretted her actions, but it was too late.

As the yamen runners moved, Zhao was taken to the beating ground outside the county government office.

Her heart was heavy, she knew that what she was about to face would be a painful torture, but she also knew that this was the price of her crime and there was nothing she could do now.

"Girl! I am your mother. Are you just going to watch her order someone to beat me up?"

Just then, Mr. Shen also arrived, stood in the hall, and gave a sermon like an old scholar.

"As a junior, how can you beat your elders? Although your elders made mistakes, they were only minor ones. Our dynasty governs the world with filial piety. How can Lord Song punish your mother-in-law?"

Shen Yan watched coldly from the side, they had clearly severed their relationship.

What juniors and elders? Didn't Mr. Shen look down on Song Yunfeng as his son-in-law? He was pleading for his wife and was acting so arrogant.

How ridiculous!

Song Yunfeng watched expressionlessly. He knew that this was both a punishment and a lesson for Zhao.

He hoped that through such punishment, she would realize her mistakes and re-examine the value and meaning of life.

"Mr. Shen is wrong."

Just then, an old voice was heard from the door. Following the voice, it turned out to be the highly respected Mr. Yang.

Shen Yan and Song Yunfeng exchanged glances and walked forward.

Unexpectedly, Shen Xiucai got the upper hand and immediately changed his expression: "Master Yang, why are you here?"

He was able to become a teacher in the town's school only with the recommendation of Mr. Yang. After seeing Mr. Yang, he was naturally very respectful.

But just now, he was still angrily scolding Song Yunfeng, wanting to teach him a lesson and sue him for being unfilial.

After Shen Xiucai finished currying favor with Master Yang, he angrily looked towards the court: "Song Yunfeng, come down quickly, and invite Master Yang up. Who are you, and why are you still sitting there?"

Song Yunfeng felt very embarrassed, but because Shen Xiucai was Shen Yan's father and his father-in-law, he didn't say anything.

But when Mr. Shen saw that he ignored him, he became very angry and felt humiliated. He went up to the hall to arrest the man, but was stopped by the yamen runners.

"What are you doing? What are you doing?"

The onlookers on the side walked forward, revealing a hint of displeasure in their eyes: "Mr. Shen, what you said is wrong. The county magistrate is trying a case. How can you be so disrespectful?"

Shen Xiucai didn't take other people's words seriously at all, and even shouted: "Who do you think you are? This county magistrate is my son-in-law, and he has to come down if I tell him to!"

Song Yunfeng sighed inwardly, he knew that Master Yang must have something important to discuss this time, so he immediately ordered the bailiff to invite Master Yang to the hall.

Shen Xiucai became even angrier when he saw this. He felt that he had lost face and couldn't help but lash out again: "Song Yunfeng, you are blatantly disrespectful. I will complain to the emperor and see if you can continue to be a county magistrate!"

When the yamen runners saw that Mr. Shen had a bad attitude, they immediately stepped forward to stop him and advised him not to be impulsive.

In the hall, Song Yunfeng tried his best to ignore him, and Shen Xiucai's noisy voice floated past their ears.

"This is the county government office. I am judging a case. No noise is allowed. Take him away and give him twenty lashes of the cane!"

Mr. Shen was stunned. He obviously didn't expect that Song Yunfeng would even hit him.

"Are you crazy? I am your father-in-law. You just wanted to hit your mother-in-law, and now you want to hit your father-in-law. This is really outrageous. I tell you, if you dare to let them do it today, I will not let you off easily sooner or later!"

Facing Shen Xiucai's aggressiveness, Song Yunfeng remained calm and composed. He said calmly: "Shen Xiucai, this is the county government, a place of law. Your father-in-law's identity has nothing to do with criminal responsibility. If you refuse to abide by the rules, I can only deal with you according to the law."

After hearing what Song Yunfeng said, Shen Xiucai became extremely angry. He struggled desperately to break free from the yamen runners and kept threatening Song Yunfeng.

Upon seeing this, the yamen runners immediately tightened their control over Mr. Shen, pinning him firmly to the ground to prevent him from committing further offenses.

Song Yunfeng watched this scene expressionlessly. He knew that he had made the right decision and should not allow criminals to act recklessly just because of personal relationships.

In the hall, Mr. Yang also heard Mr. Shen's arrogant remarks. He snorted coldly, expressing his deep dissatisfaction with Mr. Shen's behavior.

"Mr. Shen, you must know that everyone is equal before the law, and no one is above the law." Mr. Yang said seriously.

Shen Yan stood aside, her heart full of contradictions and anxiety, but she could not control her father's behavior.

Song Yunfeng glanced coldly at the embarrassed Shen Xiucai and said, "If you dare to be rude again, I will detain you and put you in jail for three years."

Shen Yan also advised: "Dad, please stop making trouble. This is the court, not our home. In this place, there is no distinction between seniority and inferiority. If you make a mistake, you must accept the punishment."

"Who do you think you are? How dare you talk to your father like that, you beast!" After saying that, Shen Xiucai stretched out his hand and was about to hit Shen Yan in the face.

Shen Yan was used to it. Her father was a thug, but he would just go to jail if he beat someone up in court.

However, what was supposed to come did not come. Shen Xiucai seemed to be blocked by something. Shen Yan opened his eyes and saw that it was Song Yunfeng who was blocking in front of him. Shen Xiucai's slap did not hit Song Yunfeng but hit him instead.

"Husband!" Shen Yan felt a little distressed.

Song Yunfeng's face darkened. He was not angry. He just looked at Shen Xiucai coldly, with a hint of disdain and warning in his eyes.

"Mr. Shen, you have to know that if you do this again, I will never show mercy."

His tone was cold, stern and resolute.

When Shen Xiucai saw that his hand had hit Song Yunfeng, he was horrified and quickly explained with a smile: "Song County Magistrate, you shouldn't protect her. I will teach the child a lesson."

Song Yunfeng sneered and said nothing. He knew that this was not the time to argue with Mr. Shen. He needed to maintain the order and dignity of the court.

Seeing this, Shen Yan felt both relieved and distressed. She knew that her husband was standing by her side to protect her at this time, but at the same time she also felt heartbroken that he was injured.

Everyone present was watching this scene silently. The brutality of Mr. Shen and the calmness of Song Yunfeng formed a sharp contrast, which gave people a little more confidence in the authority and justice of the county government.

As the storm subsided, people gradually dispersed. Shen Yan gently supported Song Yunfeng and asked with concern: "Husband, are you okay?"

Song Yunfeng shook his head and smiled and comforted him: "I'm fine, it's just a flesh wound."
