Chapter 59: Picking Mushrooms in the Mountains

Following the direction that the previous few people took into the mountain, this time it was relatively smooth and they soon found a lot of mushrooms.

Su He instructed that they should only pick up items that they recognized and not pick up items that they did not recognize.

After giving the instructions, everyone dispersed and started picking up mushrooms.

Su He was still thinking about the large patch of chicken mushrooms and was looking for them everywhere. Unfortunately, he only saw one or two occasionally, so he had to give up.

Just pick up whatever you see, and then decide if you really come across it.

The mushrooms are growing well at this time. You don’t have to look for them much. You can see them by pulling away the grass and dead leaves. Most of them are the milk mushrooms, blue-headed mushrooms and red onions that we picked up before.

Although we just entered the mountain yesterday, there are still a lot of people coming in today.

It won’t take long before you can pick up half of the basket.

Su He was still carrying the basket. Last night, Su Chi secretly told her that he saw black fungus in the mountains again during the day, but he didn't pick them yesterday because he had nothing to put them in.

Su He definitely couldn't miss this good thing, so he carried a backpack and a basket into the mountains today.

Sure enough, not long after entering the mountain, Su Chi led Su He to the place where he said the wood ear was found.

It was really black fungus. Su He put down his backpack and picked all the black fungus from the dead tree trunk.

Last time, Su He also picked some wood ears and brought them back. Everyone knew that this thing was edible. I also asked Su He where this thing called wood ears generally likes to grow. While picking mushrooms, I carefully observed around to see if there were any other wood ears.

"Sister, sister, look, I found something."

Su He was picking the wood ears seriously. Just after she finished, she saw Su Chi running towards her from a distance.

Su Chi ran to Su He, panting, and carefully holding the thing in his hand.

"Pheasant eggs!"

Su He exclaimed, and even Xie, who was standing nearby, heard the sound and came forward. Seeing the pheasant eggs in Su Chi's hand, she also laughed happily.

"Just now I saw a nest in the bushes over there, which looked very similar to the one I saw last time, so I dug it open to take a look. I didn't expect to see any pheasants, but there were pheasant eggs."

Su Chi grinned and counted, "There are six!"

Now the Su family keeps most of the eggs for themselves and doesn’t sell them.

An egg only costs one cent if sold, Su He said it is better to eat it at home to replenish nutrition.

Every day at home we either do farm work in the fields or go into the mountains. It’s not an easy job, and we can’t stand eating wild vegetables every day.

During this period, the Su family could still eat eggs from time to time, but Su Chi was still very happy when he picked up pheasant eggs.

"Sister will make you some fried eggs tonight!"

Su He touched his younger brother's head.

After saying that, he picked up the fungus in the basket and said, "Put the pheasant eggs here, so you don't have to worry about them getting damaged."

Su Chi nodded, carefully put the pheasant eggs in his hand into the basket one by one, and ran away again. He kept digging in the grass in front of him without blinking, for fear of missing out on other pheasant eggs in the grass.

"Okay, let's go back."

It was just past noon when the group returned home.

The sun is shining brightly in the Su family's yard.

Old Mrs. Su had already cooked lunch in advance, so everyone put down their backpacks and rested to have lunch.

"Grandma, there are pheasant eggs in the basket."

Su He saw that Old Lady Su was fetching water in the yard and was about to wash the fungus in the basket, so he quickly said, "Achi found it. I'll make scrambled eggs for him tonight."

Old Mrs. Su nodded and laughed softly.

She reached out and pushed aside the layer of wood ear mushrooms on top, and sure enough, she saw a few round pheasant eggs in the basket.

They didn't expect that they could pick up pheasant eggs in the mountains today. After counting, they found that there were six.

He took them out carefully one by one, put them in a bamboo basket and put them in the kitchen.

Su He said she would make scrambled eggs for Su Chi in the evening. Now the family occasionally has pork bones and offal bought by Su He in town to satisfy their hunger, and life is not as tight as before.

But if the children want to eat scrambled eggs, they can eat them. These eggs won’t be worth much money if they are kept.

Old Mrs. Su spread out a bamboo mat in the yard, fetched water from the well, washed the fungus in the basket, and slowly spread it out on the bamboo mat to dry.

After Old Mrs. Su washed and dried the fungus, everyone in the Su family had finished their lunch and rested enough, so they started to work in a division of labor.

Washing mushrooms, cutting mushrooms, stacking pork...everyone wants to do more work and no one complains of being tired.

In their eyes, these are all hard-earned money. If they could carry so much into the mountains, they would like to pick more mushrooms.

Su He said that the owner of Qianweilou said he wanted as much mushroom sauce as possible, and the more they could pick up, the more sauce they could make.

After all the mushrooms picked up in the mountains today were made into mushroom jam, the whole family breathed a sigh of relief.

"Ah He, go and have a rest. Your mother and I will make dinner."

Mrs. Luo looked at Su He's little face. She had been busy these days, either going into the mountains or going to the town. She had become quite tanned. Mrs. Luo felt so distressed to see her like that.

Mrs. Xie also felt sorry for her daughter and nodded in response.

Just eat something simple at night and go to bed early. We have to go into the mountains for a day tomorrow and go to town the day after tomorrow. We can't overwork ourselves.

Mrs. Xie and Mrs. Luo have also watched Su He cook a lot of dishes these days. Her cooking skills have improved a lot compared to before. Although the dishes they make are not as good as Su He's, they taste pretty good too.

After being busy for so long, Su He was a little tired and did not insist on continuing. He asked Mrs. Xie and Mrs. Luo to prepare dinner.

The staple food in the evening was corn porridge, fried with eggs using a handful of wild garlic dug outside the vegetable garden when we came down the mountain.

Seeing that the purslane was very tender, I picked a handful and stir-fried it directly.

During the day, Su He picked up a few chicken mushrooms and kept them all. He made a mushroom soup.

Finally, I fried a plate of sauerkraut and added two peppers. The sour and spicy taste went best with rice.

After dinner, I cleaned up the dishes and the kitchen, and the day was over.

Su He lay on the bed and closed his eyes, but his mind was still calculating the amount of mushroom jam he had made in the past two days. He thought that he could go into the mountains for another day tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow he would have to send the first batch of mushroom jam to Qianweilou.

The sounds of frogs and birds chirping could be heard from time to time, and Su He's mind slowly became dull, and he fell asleep without knowing when.

Perhaps because he was thinking about the mushroom jam, Su He kept picking mushrooms in the mountains that night, smiling as he did so. In the end, the mushrooms turned into a bunch of white silver beads, so many that Su He couldn't even hold them in his hands. He was so happy that the corners of his mouth were raised the whole time.

When she woke up the next day, Xie asked curiously, "Ah He, what did you dream about last night? I could even hear your laughter."

This girl has always been calm. I don’t know what she dreamed about last night. When she woke up in the morning, I could still hear her giggling.
