Devil's Army
Chapter 2089 Battle of the Second Pass
More than 3 Japanese troops spread out along the south bank of the Yalu River, and after breaking through the defense line of the Third Regiment along the Yalu River, they divided into three routes:
One group advanced towards Changbai County via the Yaoling Mountain position, another group advanced towards Changbai County via the Twelve Gully Pass, and the last group advanced towards Changbai County via the Fourteen Gully Post.
The Japanese troops in the central route encountered fierce resistance from the soldiers of the Fourth Battalion at the Twelve Gully Pass.
The 2st Battalion of the 3th Division of North Korea, which served as the vanguard, suffered two-thirds casualties on the Yaoling Mountain front and was unable to attack the Shierdaogou Pass.
The force attacking the Shierdaogou Pass now is the 1st Battalion of the Japanese 21st Division.
They used artillery fire to clear a path, fiercely bombarding the positions of the devilish troops on both sides of the pass. However, the devilish positions on both sides of the pass were cleverly positioned, in the blind spot of their artillery positions, so the fierce artillery fire had little effect on them.
If the Japanese artillery were to advance, they would be highly vulnerable to attacks from the devilish troops.
Despite prolonged attacks, the Japanese army was unable to break through the defenses of the Fourth Battalion.
The Japanese commander then attempted to bypass the pass and attack from the flank. However, the flank was adjacent to the turbulent Yalu River, with a significant difference in elevation between the river and the riverbank, making it difficult for the Japanese to outflank the pass from the river or the riverbank.
Desperate, the Japanese division commander didn't care about anything else. On one hand, he ordered his soldiers to intensify their attack on the front, and on the other hand, he organized a commando team to climb and raid the Fourth Battalion's position from both sides.
The Fourth Battalion's attention was indeed drawn to the Japanese troops attacking from the front. However, patrols were stationed on both flanks.
The slopes of the hills on the east and west sides were extremely steep, making it difficult for the Japanese soldiers to climb and resulting in a slow climbing speed.
Moreover, the patrolmen of the Fourth Battalion finally discovered the Japanese assault team climbing the rock.
They first hurled grenades at the Japanese soldiers preparing to climb the cliff, causing them to cry out in pain and suffer heavy casualties, forcing them to take cover.
Without the cover of the Japanese troops at the bottom of the cliff, the Japanese soldiers climbing the cliff were like lambs to the slaughter.
The patrolling soldiers of the Fourth Battalion grabbed machine guns and opened fire on the Japanese soldiers who were climbing the rocks.
One by one, the Japanese soldiers who were climbing the cliff were shot and tumbled to the bottom.
Meanwhile, the Japanese troops launching a frontal attack made no progress.
They had come close to the vicinity of the Devil Force's position, but the cunning Devil Force hurled grenades at them fiercely. What was worse, most of these grenades exploded in the air, creating a rain of metal fragments that killed or wounded a large number of the approaching Japanese soldiers.
Despite prolonged attacks, the second Japanese force, like the first Japanese force attacking the Yaoling Mountain position, was still unable to break through the Devil Force's defenses.
The division commander once ordered the artillery units to organize mortars for close-range bombardment, but they were bombarded by the devilish troops' shoulder-fired artillery (rocket launchers), resulting in the loss of three heavy mortars and more than ten artillerymen.
With no other options, the 1st Battalion of the 21st Division of the Japanese Army had no choice but to launch continuous attacks on the Twelve Gully Pass.
After the third Japanese force broke through the Yalu River defense line of the "Devil Forces," it immediately launched an attack on the Shisidaogou Menkan outpost.
A group of jagged reefs lies horizontally in the river in front of the Shisidaogou Menkanshao, forming a natural "threshold".
Its left bank is a steep mountain, where the Third Regiment Commander deployed the remaining directly subordinate companies and some logistics troops.
Company Commander Liu set up machine gun firing positions behind the natural rocks on both sides of the mountain, forming an overhead firing position.
The right bank is staggered with reefs and has a rugged coastline, with no open flat land for the Japanese army to land and deploy their forces, making it difficult to outflank them.
