Devil's Army

Chapter 182: Defending the Fortifications

After the first damaged tank was towed aside, the second tank pushed into the anti-tank cone and fired at the fortifications. The infantry also followed and fired at the devil troops in the fortifications at close range.

The engineers attempted to continue blasting the remaining small sections of the anti-tank cones.

If this section of the road was opened, the Japanese could charge up to the fortifications. So while blocking the Japanese, the Japanese engineers became the focus of attention.

Fortunately, the enemy was only about 200 meters away from the fortifications. The enemy's infantry launched a charge towards the fortifications under the cover of tanks.

Although the fortifications of the Second Regiment had the ability to resist artillery fire, they could not withstand the repeated bombings of tanks. At first, one or two shells did not cause any problems, but then the fortifications collapsed. The casualties of the Second Company rose rapidly.

Relying on accurate shooting and grenades, the Second Company blocked the Japanese infantry's charges again and again.

Another charge by the Japanese was repelled. The second company commander leaned against the collapsed fortifications, lit a cigarette and asked a soldier next to him: "How many times have we charged?"

"Captain, we have repelled the enemy's five consecutive attacks."

"It's the fifth time," the second company commander muttered to himself. He also wanted to keep guarding the fortifications and prevent the Japanese from crossing, but as the number of casualties in his company increased, he clearly felt that he was unable to do it when he repelled the Japanese's fifth charge.

"Company commander, the Japs are coming again." The soldier just shouted to the second company commander.

The second company commander threw away his cigarette butt, rushed beside a light machine gun and fired at the charging Japanese soldiers.

At this time, a Japanese tank shell exploded behind him. The second company commander's body trembled noticeably, and the light machine gun fell silent. The soldier next to him also lay quietly in the fortification, without making any movement.

When the battalion commander saw that the firepower in the fortifications had been greatly reduced, he immediately ordered the company commander to lead the first company up and replace the second company.

Due to the continuous suppression of the Japanese heavy artillery, the two howitzers of the Second Brigade had difficulty in launching a surprise attack. Wu Lang had no choice but to order the howitzers to hide and temporarily stop the attack.

The Japanese heavy artillery lost its target and also participated in the bombing of the fortifications.

When a company commander led his company of soldiers into the fortifications, more than 20 soldiers were killed or injured by the Japanese artillery.

The company commander of the first company entered the fortifications and ordered the second company to retreat from both ends of the fortifications immediately. He then led the soldiers of the first company to quickly stop the charging Japanese.

The sudden increase in firepower repelled the sixth charge of the Japanese. The remaining thirty-odd people of the Second Company, led by the deputy company commander, supported each other and withdrew from the battlefield from both sides of the fortifications.

The Japs' heavy artillery continued to bombard the fortifications, causing heavy casualties.

The Japanese launched their seventh charge. The company commander gathered the remaining troops of the company and fiercely blocked the attack. The Japanese rushed to a place 40 to 50 meters away from the fortifications and retreated.

After the Japanese infantry retreated, their heavy artillery began to bombard the fortifications again.

After the bombing, the Japs launched their eighth charge.

The captain of the first company looked around the fortification. The second company had resisted six attacks from the Japanese in half a day, while the first company had only repelled two attacks from the Japanese. He shouted to the soldiers in the fortification: "If you are still breathing and can still hold your gun, pick up your gun and get ready to fight."

The soldiers of the company helped each other and lay down in the fortifications ready for battle.

"Shoot!" the company commander ordered. The remaining soldiers of the company fiercely blocked the Japanese who were charging towards the fortifications. A soldier who was blinded by the explosion and a soldier whose right arm was broken cooperated with each other. The soldier whose right arm was broken was responsible for picking up grenades, and he was responsible for throwing grenades to the place in front of the position where the Japanese were making a lot of noise.

The Japanese lieutenant was also puzzled. The fortifications had been plowed over and over again by heavy artillery, and there should be few people left alive, but this group of Chinese soldiers could actually organize a decent resistance. If it weren't for the war, he really wanted to make friends with this group of Chinese soldiers.

Bow-legged people are such a people, they respect the strong and bully the weak.

Seeing the obviously weakened firepower in the fortifications, the battalion commander cursed loudly, "The first company is a bunch of idiots. The second company blocked the enemy's six charges in half a day, but they only repelled two of the enemy's charges. Now they are so weak."

The deputy battalion commander next to him did not speak. The Second Company's fortifications were intact at the time, and the Japanese heavy artillery did not participate in the attack on the fortifications, so they could definitely hold off the Japanese for a while longer.

The battalion commander knew the reason very well, but he felt sad when he saw his company falling one after another in the fortifications, so he found an excuse to vent his anger.

But no matter how angry he was, he still had to defend the fortifications. He ordered the third company to go up from both sides of the fortifications and replace the first company.

"Battalion Commander, ask your superiors to retreat. If we continue fighting like this, our entire battalion will be destroyed. It was more exhilarating to launch surprise attacks as before!" The deputy battalion commander suggested to the battalion commander sadly.

The first battalion commander thought about it and called the second regiment commander. The second regiment commander reported the casualties of the first battalion to Wu Lang who was staying in the regiment headquarters, and told Wu Lang the first battalion commander's suggestion.

Wu Lang thought for a moment and called Leng Feng.

Leng Feng refused outright after hearing this. He quoted a great man in the Korean War and told Wu Lang: "In this defense of Tiaobinshan County, we must 'strike the first blow to prevent a hundred blows'. If the Japanese successfully occupy Tiaobinshan County this time, then the next time we recapture Tiaobinshan County, the Japanese will send a large force to recapture it again. If this goes on, the people will lose confidence in us. Besides, Tiaobinshan County is not a strategic location. The Japanese sent a large force this time just to show off and establish the image of their Kwantung Army as invincible. After your Second Brigade finishes the fight, I will send the First Brigade. After the First Brigade finishes the fight, I, Leng Feng, will personally lead the regiment."

Wu Lang put down the phone and asked the Second Regiment Commander to give a death order to the First Battalion Commander: Hold the fortifications! At the same time, he ordered the Second Battalion of the Second Regiment to prepare to reinforce the First Battalion.
