Devil's Army
Chapter 1496: Japanese troops stationed in Mongolia strictly guard against the 1st Army
Bailingmiao Town, which was heavily defended by the Japanese army, is located in the Dalhanmaoming'an United Banner and is an important node connecting Siziwang Banner and Baotou.
This place is surrounded by mountains, with flat grasslands outside the mountains. There are no villages within 35 kilometers. It can attack or defend, and is a strategic military location.
The Japanese army also arranged a troop to garrison the Daqingshan area.
This area lies in the middle section of the Yinshan Mountains, facing the Yellow River to the south across the Tumo River and bordering the Ulanqab grasslands to the north. Its rugged terrain, with numerous valleys, mountain passes, and hidden strongholds, serves as a natural defensive barrier. An anti-Japanese guerrilla unit was active there.
The Japanese army was worried that they would join forces with the devil troops and enter Baotou from the Ulanqab grassland, so they arranged a troop to enter in advance to wipe out the anti-Japanese guerrillas.
The Hongya Terrace, located in the northwest of Siziwang Banner, is a rectangular mountain running from north to south. The top of the mountain is relatively flat and the mountain is tall. The surrounding terrain is open and the vision is good, so the invading enemy can be discovered in advance. There are also limited roads up the mountain, making it easy to defend but difficult to attack.
The Japanese army arranged a squadron of Japanese troops and a company of puppet troops to guard the mountain road to prevent the devil troops from bypassing Bailingmiao Town and attacking Baotou from here.
When the Japanese troops stationed in Mongolia strictly guarded all the roads leading to Baotou from the Four Prince Banners, the Second Regiment had no plans to attack Baotou.
Because Baotou was the headquarters of the Japanese army in the Allied Forces, it not only housed the 12th Army Cavalry Group, but also the first and only tank division in the Chinese theater of war: the rd Tank Division.
Furthermore, the Japanese Army stationed in Mongolia also possessed the 26th Infantry Division, the 2nd Mixed Brigade, and the Air Force. With a total strength of over 12 men, this was not something that could be taken down by just the th Brigade or two regiments.
Moreover, the Japanese troops stationed in Mongolia had multiple airports: Zhangjiakou Airport, Datong Airport, Baotou Airport, and Ganzhuer Temple Airport.
Each airport was more than 1000 kilometers away from the aircraft base of the First Anti-Japanese Army, and some were even more than 1600 kilometers away.
This meant that they did not participate in the battle between the Japanese Air Force and the First Air Force Battalion of the First Anti-Japanese Army, and the air force's strength was better preserved.
(The Japanese Army fought the Nomonhan Air Battle with the Soviet and Mongolian Army at Ganzhuer Temple Airport, and the Japanese 11th Air Squadron suffered heavy casualties. However, this was the air force transferred from the Japanese Kwantung Army, not the air force of the Mongolian Army.)
Therefore, in order to reduce casualties, Leng Feng would not launch a full-scale battle against the Japanese troops stationed in Mongolia before completely occupying their air superiority.
As the battle progressed, the Japanese Kwantung Army Air Division and the China Expeditionary Army's Central China Air Division, except for the more than 100 Type 52 Zero fighters that had just been purchased from the country, had no other air forces to fear.
Leng Feng was looking for an opportunity to destroy the more than 100 Japanese fighter planes, and at the same time was preparing to advance the air force to the northwest to curb the air force of the Japanese army stationed in Mongolia.
The first airport of choice is the Shangdu County Airport, which has been recaptured by the First Regiment.
This was previously an airport for the Japanese Army stationed in Mongolia. When the First Regiment launched a large-scale attack on Ulanqab City, it had a brief battle with the First Army's Xinjing Air Force and abandoned it after being defeated.
The hardware facilities such as runways, parking lots, control towers and warehouses are all here.
When the Japanese Air Force retreated, they did not destroy Shangdu Airport on a large scale in order to use it later.
Of course, the ammunition depots and fuel depots had been emptied by the Japanese army.
The commander of a regiment arranged his troops to tidy up the Shangdu Airport and prepare for the arrival of the First Army Air Force.
