Devil's Army

Chapter 1269: Building a Shooting Range and New Barracks

After half a day's training, these guerrillas have mastered their gun-holding postures, but they still don't know how to use the gun properly.

Practicing shooting here will easily expose the camp.

Battalion Commander Zhang decided to open a shooting range deep in the mountains and lead his troops to practice shooting there.

Since the surprise attack on the Japanese squadron had achieved a great victory, Battalion Commander Zhang decided to take the troops out the next day to look for opportunities to kill some Japanese troops and bring back a batch of weapons and ammunition.

At 6 o'clock the next morning, the soldiers who received the news gathered at the door of the barracks and waited for orders.

Before Captain Zhang could announce the order, the signalman hurried over and handed him a telegram from the Kunming headquarters.

When Captain Zhang opened the telegram, he found that it was a secret message sent directly to him by Commander Leng.

After reading the secret message, Battalion Commander Zhang immediately cancelled the combat plan and ordered the veterans to lead the new recruits and immediately strengthen military training.

The soldiers stood at the door of the barracks in surprise, looking at Battalion Commander Zhang.

Battalion Commander Zhang did not explain further and simply shouted, "Disband!" Then he left with Captain Chen and two soldiers.

He wanted to find a shooting range to train the soldiers in shooting.

"Captain, why don't you go fight the Japs today?"

On the way, Captain Chen asked puzzledly.

"Our superiors have assigned us a secret mission. We need to keep a low profile during this period."

Captain Zhang lowered his head and hurried on his way without further explanation.

More than an hour later, Captain Chen and Battalion Commander Zhang came to a pond.

"Battalion Commander, do you think this place is okay?" asked Captain Chen.

Battalion Commander Zhang took a look and found a large depression here. It rained all year round, forming a large pond that could provide water for the team members.

There is an empty lawn next to it, where you can take a break or use it as a shooting range.

The lush trees all around isolate this place from the outside world.

"Okay, this is it. Captain Chen, go back and bring them all here. Let's start shooting practice today. Tell them to bring their tools and turn this place into a barracks."

After Captain Chen left, Battalion Commander Zhang took two soldiers to start trimming the grass and create a shooting range.

At around 10 o'clock in the morning, Captain Chen and his soldiers arrived at the shooting range one after another.

Battalion Commander Zhang asked the company commander and several platoon leaders to lead the new recruits and guerrillas in target practice. He led other soldiers to build a group of barracks opposite the shooting range.

The recruits were all very excited as this was their first time shooting a gun.

As the target practice for the new recruits and guerrillas was very heavy, the bullets were being consumed at a visible rate. Captain Chen saw it and was anxious, but he didn't dare to say anything.

On this day, Secretary Yu came to Captain Zhang's room, closed the door and asked Captain Zhang:

"The troops train like this every day, and the bullet consumption is quite large. If we don't go to fight the Japanese and replenish our ammunition, we won't even be able to defend ourselves if we encounter the Japanese."

"My superiors have given me a secret mission and asked us to keep a low profile during this period. Unless there are special circumstances, we generally do not engage in major direct conflicts with the Japanese. We will replenish ammunition and food from other channels."

Secretary Yu knew that Captain Zhang had a plan, so he didn't say anything else.

Having been engaged in underground work for many years, he knows better than anyone what secret missions mean.

During this period, Battalion Commander Zhang arranged for Captain Chen to take some nearby guerrillas to various villages to recruit new soldiers.

Captain Chen and the guerrillas lived up to Captain Zhang's expectations and recruited more than 400 new soldiers in more than half a month. However, the shortage of food and ammunition became increasingly serious.

After more than half a month of intensive training, the new recruits and guerrillas made rapid progress.

In the blink of an eye, 20 days had passed since the First Army Air Force's last attack on the Japanese Sanya Airport.

On this day, Battalion Commander Zhang led his soldiers back to the old camp.

He ordered his soldiers to pile wood in several conspicuous locations in the old camp and prepare to start a fire.

"Captain, wouldn't a fire here in the camp give away his position?"

"The firewood should be burned dry, so that less smoke is produced and it is not easy to be seen from outside."

Although the soldiers were puzzled, they followed the orders.

Not long after, the roar of an airplane was heard in the sky.

Battalion Commander Zhang ordered the fire to be set.

Soon, a group of fighter planes and bombers from the First Army rushed towards the Japanese Sanya Airport which was under repair.

At this time, the Japanese army had not even completed half of the repair work at Sanya Airport. They only built two simple runways for aircraft to take off.

The anti-aircraft artillery troops have not yet entered Sanya Airport.

Nearly 100 fighter planes and bombers of the First Army moved in as if they were in an empty space, strafing and bombing the Japanese planes taking off and parked on the apron.

At the same time, two other bombers left the flight group.
