Devil's Army
Chapter 1013: The Fall of Luan County
On this day, two major offensives organized by the Japanese battalion commander and deputy battalion commander both ended in failure.
The commander of the regiment knew that the Japanese army would not accept defeat and would definitely attack again, so he arranged for the soldiers to quickly consolidate the fortifications and wait for the next attack from the Japanese army.
In the next few days, the 27rd Brigade and the 110th Brigade fought repeatedly with the Japanese th Division and the th Division in the direction of Gubeikou and Jiangjunshan.
The Fifth and Third Brigades were successively short of troops, so Gray Wolf hurriedly dispatched the 364th and 727th Regiments of the 728th Brigade of the Sichuan Army to reinforce the Fifth and Third Brigades respectively.
After this period of development, the 364th Brigade of the Sichuan Army not only restored its strength, but also grew to more than 6000 people.
Upon receiving the order, Brigade Commander Wang quickly led the 727th and 728th Regiments to the front line.
The Japanese 27th Brigade was blocked in its attack on the Qianxi Mountain Range, and it divided its troops to attack Qianxi County from Xifengkou.
A battalion of the 3rd Regiment of the 3rd Brigade built fortifications in a dangerous area between Xifengkou and Qianxi County. After blocking several Japanese attacks, the Japanese sent aircraft and artillery to carry out high-intensity bombing. The 1st battalion suffered heavy casualties and was clearly under-strength.
The third regiment commander sent the only remaining guard company to plug the gap.
As the battle was in full swing, a battalion of the 27th Brigade of the Japanese Army divided into three groups and launched a fierce attack on the positions of the rd Regiment, where the firepower was already weak.
The Japanese troops on the right approached the fortifications several times, but were blown back by the soldiers of the guard company with grenades. However, the entire fortification was still surrounded by dangers and was in danger of being breached at any time.
At this critical moment, a battalion of the 364th Regiment of the 778th Brigade of the Sichuan Army was ordered to rush to the battlefield and immediately joined the battle, repelling the most critical Japanese troops and consolidating the precarious front line.
The 11th and 12th Brigades, which had weaker combat effectiveness, lost positions such as Sanchakou, Bailonggang Bridge, and Luan County under the attack of the Japanese Army's 1st Mixed Independent Brigade, 7th Mixed Independent Brigade, and 9th Mixed Independent Brigade. The Japanese army also attacked Fengnan County.
At nine o'clock in the morning on February 2, the Japanese Army's 24th Independent Mixed Brigade and the Japanese Army's th Independent Mixed Brigade launched attacks on Zunhua County, Fengnan County and Luan County respectively.
Luan County was once an important material supply base when the Japanese Army's Fifth Division encircled and suppressed the Tangshan base.
This time, the Japanese Army's 7th Independent Mixed Brigade divided its troops into three routes and attacked Luan County with heavy forces.
The 3rd Regiment of the 11th Brigade of the 1st Army stationed in Luan County. The commander of the 3rd Regiment did not know which direction the Japanese army would attack from, so he had to deploy three battalions at three city gates to block the Japanese attack. The company directly under the regiment served as a reserve force, ready to rush to the city gate where the battle situation was critical at any time to reinforce.
Who knew that the Japanese army did not distinguish between the main attack and the secondary attack, and launched a fierce attack on the three city gates at the same time. Artillery fire continued to fall on the walls of the three city gates of Luan County.
Soldiers of the 3rd Regiment of the 11th Brigade fought bloody battles under the Japanese artillery fire and repelled the Japanese attacks several times. However, the three city gates collapsed to varying degrees under the fierce bombardment of the Japanese artillery fire.
The Japanese troops in the south were the first to enter the city through the collapsed city wall. The second battalion stationed at the southern city gate had to lead its troops to retreat into Luan County and resist the Japanese attack layer by layer according to the civilian houses.
Soldiers from the Japanese Army's 7th Independent Mixed Brigade successively entered Luan County from the south gate, and also divided their troops to attack the east and west gates of Luan County.
The troops of the 3rd Battalion of the 1st Battalion of the 3rd Regiment stationed at the east and west gates of Luan County were attacked by the Japanese troops inside and outside the city. They had no choice but to abandon the east and west gates of Luan County and withdraw from Luan County through the north gate together with the 2nd Battalion.
The commander of the Third Regiment led the remaining troops to retreat to the northern position outside Luan County and Xiaoguanzhuang Airport.
Commander Du of the 11th Brigade arranged a battalion of the brigade's direct regiment to garrison here.
This is the last line of defense to the north of Xiaoguanzhuang Airport. If the Japanese army breaks through this line of defense, they will be able to reach the Xiaoguanzhuang Airport that they have dreamed of occupying.
The commander of the Third Regiment led the remaining troops to retreat behind this line of defense and stopped retreating. When the Japanese attacked this line of defense, their Third Regiment would live and die with this line of defense.
Sure enough, after the Japanese Army's 7th Independent Mixed Brigade occupied Luan County, it did not rest, but immediately pursued the troops of the 3rd Regiment to the outer fortifications north of Xiaoguanzhuang Airport.
More than half an hour later, the Japanese army launched the first wave of attack on the outer fortifications north of Xiaoguanzhuang Airport.
While commanding his troops to participate in the blocking battle at the northern fortifications, the third regiment commander reported the battle situation here to Brigade Commander Du.
Brigade Commander Du reported to Gray Wolf the latest battle situation in which Luan County had fallen and the troops had retreated to the northern defense line of Xiaoguanzhuang Airport.
Gray Wolf immediately ordered Liu Yaohua, who had been on standby in Sanhe County, to arrange a regiment to quickly reinforce the position north of Xiaoguanzhuang Airport.
Since the position of the 1st Army's Xiaoguanzhuang Airport was located on a narrow road, the Japanese army could not deploy its troops. Therefore, the Japanese battalion commander arranged for the Japanese infantry to launch a wave-like attack on the 11th Brigade's direct battalion with the support of artillery.
The soldiers of the direct battalion, led by the battalion commander, blocked wave after wave of attacks from the Japanese army. Until the evening, the Japanese army's 7th Independent Mixed Brigade was unable to break through the direct battalion's position.
At night, the cool wind kept blowing towards the position of the direct battalion.
The battalion commander shuddered, feeling that something might happen tonight, so he stayed in the position with the soldiers, staring at the Japanese troops opposite.
