HP: For a better world

Chapter 79: Newt's American Journey 1

"Well, Mr. Scamander. In your opinion, where is this lost Nundu leopard going now?" A member from the Department of Accidental Magic of the United States Ministry of Magic looked eagerly at Newt Scamander, who was squatting on the ground regardless of the dirt and mess.

Unlike the defenseless Newt, this Ministry of Magic escort had a thick soap bubble on his head, the pearly round bubbles sparkling in the sun - it was a variation of the Bubble Head Charm, probably out of some strange taste.

Newt did not question his perfect protection measures. He just picked up a hair from the cracked concrete, took out a crystal glass bottle from his coat, put it in and screwed it on.

"Will that find it, Mr. Newt?"

The member with the bubble head curse said excitedly.

“What, what?” Newt raised his head with the bottle in his hand. After hearing what the Ministry of Magic employee said, he quickly shook his head and denied it. “No, no, no, no… These things are not used to locate it. I just want to use these things to judge how it is doing, how healthy it is, how big it is, or what condition it is in now.”

"Oh, you are indeed professional..." complimented the commissioner from the Ministry of Magic.

Newt smiled awkwardly, "Of course I am a professional...but, I have a question that I have wanted to ask for a long time."

"What's the problem? Mr. Scamander, my job is to help you find this leopard that suddenly appeared in the shortest time, as long as I can answer it." The Commissioner of the Ministry of Magic said in a solemn tone.

Of course, Newt didn't mind the attitude of the Commissioner of the US Ministry of Magic, but...

"In fact, I don't understand when can we turn off the sunlight above our heads?" As he said this, Newt stood up from the concrete floor that looked like a piece of cement dug out from a Muggle street. With an embarrassed look on his face, he blocked the magical sunlight above his head, pointed, and looked around at the dark room of the United States Ministry of Magic with a helpless look.

They seemed to be standing in a Muggle studio, and Newt was surrounded by a group of wizards wearing the uniforms of the American Ministry of Magic.

"There are also a group of gentlemen who came from nowhere next to me... I know that what I am doing now is important, but it is not important enough for everyone to come and watch..."

The wizards who were walking around with the Bubble Head Curse on their faces and pretending to be doing their own things - especially the wizard wearing a ghostly green hood who walked back and forth here seven times - suddenly quickened their pace and disappeared from the room.

"……Bar."

Before Newt finished his words, the employees who had come to watch the fun had already run away.

The commissioner with the pearlescent bubble head spell coughed and said calmly, "Maybe they were just busy with something. You know, everyone is very concerned about the incident that broke out in the US Ministry of Magic, which almost leaked the wizarding world and seriously violated the Statute of Secrecy."

“But, I think…” Newt struggled with his words, not knowing how to express his doubts in a tactful way… “This alone may not be enough, Mr. Hunter… This scene is missing something unique… something that is difficult to express in words…”

"Did we not do a good enough job, sir?" Commissioner Hunter said in amazement. "We moved the Nundul Panther back to the Ministry of Magic exactly where it appeared on the Muggle TV... We even used magic to simulate the angle of sunlight on that day - I assure you, every inch of sunlight and every crack in the cement are intact and original!"

Newt walked out of the concrete pavement wordlessly.

“…No…actually you don’t have to do it so well…or rather…actually…you do it too well…” Newt resisted the urge to cover his face, feeling that he could no longer keep up with the times of the young people.

Except for the street where Newt had just squatted, the rest of the place was just an ordinary room inside the U.S. Ministry of Magic. In order to highlight the conspicuousness of the beam of sunlight, they even used light-reducing magic on other parts of the room.

In other words, the clue that Newt had just spent half a day trying to find was just a small section of road that the Ministry of Magic staff had pried back from the Muggle streets.

But he really couldn't say that their method did not preserve clues well... because Newt could still find scattered bits of Nungu leopard hair, footprints and... blood in the pile.

"It's injured. But it's not too serious..." Newt pinched his eyebrows with a headache, "What I want to know more is... why a magical animal from East Africa appeared in the United States... They shouldn't leave their homeland... This place is not suitable for them."

Hunter led Newt, an expert on wild magical animals, out of the evidence room and said, "In fact, Mr. Scamander, this is not a common situation. Our Aurors believe that this is a transnational magical animal smuggling case involving No-Maj. Along with this Nundul, there are also several Evil Birds and Runespoor Snakes. We have already caught the latter few visitors from East Africa."

They went down to the elevator and nodded to the American Ministry of Magic employees who were peering curiously around.

Newt turned up his collar, trying to hide his face quietly, but he failed. The collar of the clothes Tina brought him today was not enough to cover his entire face.

The gazes from the side seemed to become more intense. Newt touched his neck uncomfortably, and then touched his pockets.

Hunter noticed his movements: "What's wrong Mr. Scamander, are you missing something?"

"Oh no, nothing... nothing..." Newt touched every place on his body where he could hide something, and said in annoyance: "I was just touching my scarf... I remembered that I gave it to my grandson."

If he had a scarf, he could bury his face in it quietly to avoid the prying eyes of people around him.

"Mr. Hunter, I think you know I need more information...not just this..." Newt said, trying to divert the attention of the people around him.

"Of course, of course." Commissioner Hunter interrupted him. "I promise that the other places are well preserved as well, Mr. Scamander. Where it appeared, we have cast a Confusion Charm on the No-Maj Transportation Construction Agency to make them think that there was a landslide in that section of the road. We have cordoned it off and do not allow anyone to pass through."

Hunter paused and motioned to Newt, who wanted to ask a question, to wait, and the elevator door opened.

Newt swallowed back any questions he might have had about the patch of pavement in the evidence room.

They walked out of the elevator, and the Ministry of Magic employees who refused to leave even after the elevator door opened several times watched them silently.

The stares intensified, and Newt tried to convince himself that they were just enthusiastic fans of his books, and that it was no big deal.

Hunter ignored his colleagues' gazes and said with a bit of uncontrollable joy: "In fact, I was just about to take you there."

They walked to the busy hall. The clock in the middle of the hall was divided into seven sections, each with levels 1-6, which were:

There are several options: [Zero threat][Low threat][Medium threat][High alert][Dangerous situation][Serious situation and unknown activities][Level 6 critical situation].

One of the pointers is firmly on [Level 1], with the number [] marked next to it.

"What about Tina? She came with me. I think she should be traveling with me." Newt looked up and saw that the hall was much better. The wizards coming and going were all busy with their own things. No one noticed where the few people who just got off the elevator came from.

"Mrs. Scamander should be reviewing the past at her former workplace and seeing her former subordinates." Hunter said, taking Newt to a different direction in the lobby of the Ministry of Magic. "This way, Mr. Scamander, your wife is here."

"Tina." Newt saw Tina, who was talking with the young man next to her with her head down. She was wearing an iron-gray windbreaker. Unlike when she was young, she now buttoned the windbreaker tightly, and her hair was shining with silver.

She looked up at Newt, patted the current head of the department with emotion, then slowly walked to Newt, took his right hand, and gave him half of her black scarf.

"Where's your scarf? It's so cold and you forgot it again."

Newt buried his chin in the warm scarf and smiled apologetically, "I gave the scarf to Rolf."

Tina was helpless, "Doesn't he have one? Do you really want to pass on your old scarf?"

The wrinkles around Newt's eyes smoothed out.

“Rolf loved it.”

Tina looked at him with amusement, and after a while she naturally asked Hunter, who was pretending not to exist and watching everything beside her.

"Next we should go to the place where the Nangdu leopard appeared." Tina waved to the people behind her, "Let's go. This is urgent."

……

Hunter apparated them to a street near the edge of the Muggle city.

It was surrounded by an iron wall that the Maji used to block construction sites during road construction.

Hunter pointed to a tall building nearby and said, "Let's pretend that there was a major fire in that building, and the road here collapsed and needed repairs. Now this place looks like a ruin and a construction site to the No-Maj people, so they won't come here."

Then he led Newt and the others towards the specific place where the incident happened, pointing to the abandoned green old car not far away.

"We have also cast a Confusion Charm on the No-Maj responsible for these iron boxes. They will lead the 'cars' - I should remember correctly, they are called cars - that lead here to other places."

Hunter said, and then met the Auror who saw them coming and asked.

"Hey, man." It seemed like they were old acquaintances. Hunter hugged him and patted each other vigorously on both sides. Then Hunter introduced them and said, "This is Mr. Newt Scamander. He is an expert invited by the Ministry. This is his wife. She used to work in the Ministry... But I think you should know her."

They shook hands and Tina walked ahead of Newt.

"These are the marks left by the Muggles trying to subdue the Nundu," Hunter said, pointing to a telephone pole that had been broken by a car's head-on collision and had fallen to the ground, smashing the road.

"This animal suddenly appeared, and no one noticed it before. Although fortunately no one was injured, it caused quite a stir. There happened to be a reporter from a No-Maj TV station in the car. They were broadcasting live and recorded this scene. The colleagues in the Memory Deregistration Office have been working overtime for a month, and they still cannot guarantee whether there are any No-Maj who have retained the memory of this incident."

He turned his head and asked, "Mr. Scamander, look..."

Newt walked straight over the yellow and white warning line he had lifted and bent over to get inside.

I saw that a large piece of road had disappeared in the middle of the scene, and there were cement fragments everywhere.

Newt squatted down and gestured around in the ruins, concentrating on finding every trace in the corners.

Hunter shouted a few times, intending to tell Newt other news but it seemed as if he didn't hear it at all.

He asked cautiously, "Ma'am, is Mr. Scamander always like this?"

Tina smiled, "Yes, it's always like this. He forgets everything else when he's immersed in what he's focused on. I often need to remind him." She looked over, "You tell me, when he's satisfied here, I'll remember to remind him."

"Well," Hunter said, "we actually found its abandoned lair. But because of the power of the Nundu, the wizard who found it has moved into the third floor of St. Mungo's, and no one dares to go in. We heard that Mr. Scamander himself has a Nundu and it is safe. This is one of the reasons why we asked him to come."

"The second is to find out where the Nundu Leopard is now," Tina said. "It is still fleeing in the No-Maj world. You must find its location before you can gather wizards to besiege it."

"Yes, that's right." Hunter smiled bitterly. "Mr. Scamander's book records that it would take at least a hundred wizards to control it."

His voice turned low, "We hope that with the help of Master Scamander, the damage can be reduced. Most wizards living here have never seen a runespoor snake, let alone the most mysterious and terrifying Nundu leopard in East Africa."

"Every breath it exhales contains hundreds of diseases. We simply don't have the confidence that the Bubble Head Curse is completely ineffective."

Tina: “But you just said there were no casualties.”

"I'm also confused." Hunter said frankly, "But we can only be thankful for this. The No-Maj society in the United States is becoming more and more developed. They are developing something called the 'Internet' and beginning to spread it to every No-Maj family. When a person dies, the workload of covering up the death is increasing. The work of the Memory Deletion Office is also becoming more and more difficult."

He gave an example: "When a No-Maj dies, we not only have to modify all of his memories of his relatives and friends, but also the memories of all the people who were present. The best way is to make them think that the person they knew died for some other reason, and then the No-Maj's own organization will cancel their identity."

"Before we figured out this perfect solution, there were a lot of jokes in the Ministry, and we had to let some people take the place of the dead person. There were even more things to modify. If I remember correctly, the most troublesome one was a No-Maj who published a newspaper - the records were about 70 years ago. It was difficult for us to conceal the appearance of the corpse, and our identity involved No-Maj politics, so it was very troublesome.

They had all forgotten about it in the heavy rain that hit New York. But his father refused to believe it, so we had to say he was missing so we wouldn't have to hand over the body. I don't know if it was because of excessive grief or something, but they mobilized a lot of power, and the department was so annoyed by the harassment that they had to send more people to deal with it. Fortunately, he still has a brother. "

Hunter sighed, "How pitiful."

"Fortunately, we don't have to do that now. Unless it's another body that can't be returned. It wasn't us who killed them. We can only hope that the No-Majs will accept the news of the death of someone they knew as soon as possible."
