HP: For a better world
Chapter 51 Will and Faith
"Okay, I've told you almost everything. Did you write it down?" Lupin asked, looking at Winston who was buried in taking notes and Harry's empty hands.
"I've written it all down." Winster answered on behalf of the confused Harry.
"In fact," Harry coughed uncomfortably, feeling that his hand was a little too light, he changed the way he held the wand, "Winster and I have already rehearsed... I think we are well prepared..."
Harry changed the subject: "By the way, Professor, doesn't the Patronus Charm use happy memories to attract Dementors?" he asked somewhat puzzled, remembering a different explanation in a certain book.
"When it works correctly, it summons a Patronus," said Lupin. "A Patronus is, to be precise, a protection against Dementors - a ward, a shield between you and the Dementors."
"But this doesn't mean that the Patronus is just a disembodied shield. Its power comes from the imagination of those happy memories in our hearts when we cast the spell." Lupin explained. "Where did you see this explanation, Harry?"
"In a book in the library," Harry answered.
Lupin showed a look of realization. "No wonder. Some of the books in the school library are too old, Harry. I suggest you pay attention to the timeliness of the content next time you read them."
Harry was a little embarrassed when he recalled that when he wanted to find a book about the Patronus Charm, Hermione recommended him a bunch of academic books, from the origin to the development, rise and fall of the Patronus Charm. But Harry only had time to finish the first one. To be honest, the origin story of the Patronus Charm was like a novel, and Harry read it with great interest.
"In fact, this statement is still correct." Lupin said to him, "Because in magic, many things are not simply restrained, just like many things in the world are either the east wind prevails over the west wind, or the west wind prevails over the east wind - it all depends on the final size. Just like the clear water like a spring you learned in sixth grade - it is supposed to be a spell to restrain the fire spell." Lupin grabbed a cup from the side and held it in his hand, leaning against the box that kept making noises and contained the Boggart and spoke to them.
"But in reality - the status of the water-making spell is somewhat awkward. It is more often used in outdoor survival environments... you know, it is used to get some clean water faster when having a picnic or something." He shook his head.
"If it weren't for the Fire Extinguishing Charm, it's best not to use it on humans. It would really only be able to summon water." Lupin took out a cup and a piece of wood from somewhere. "Like this," he said, then used the Water Creating Charm to fill the cup with water and pour it over the burning wood.
But he put too little water in the cup, which made the flames jump even higher.
Lupin put the cup aside and looked back at Winston and Harry.
"If there is too little water, the flame will be difficult to extinguish. When you cast a spell, magic power is also a very important criterion. As we often say - emotions guide spells, and magic power determines the upper limit, but none of these are better than a magic wand that works as you wish." Lupin recited a sentence that was very familiar to Winster.
When I say it sounds familiar, it is actually a summary of the trivial words that one can hear from the wizards next to him from time to time in class and in daily life.
"Normal wizards have similar magical powers when they grow up, so it's more about the restraint and application of spells... Professor Flitwick should teach you this lesson when you take the OWL exam in your fifth year. The Defense Against the Dark Arts professor should be responsible for the practice... But it may not be me by then." Lupin said, looking at Harry's reluctant expression, "After all, I will only stay in this position for a year."
"Don't show that expression, Harry," he spread his hands, "You know what kind of curse has been circulating about this position... This is specially arranged by Professor Dumbledore because he is worried about my safety - besides, you can still contact me by letter even if I leave school. I will write you a reply."
Luping smiled soothingly and brought the topic back to the topic, "So when your Patronus is too weak, it is like a snack for the Dementors. Compared with wizards who will resist and cause trouble, such a Patronus is more attractive to them - of course, it is not ruled out that they are just mentally retarded and short-sighted and only chase after the food in front of them."
"Then how can we make the Patronus strong enough?" Harry thought for a moment and asked.
After all, what he wanted to learn was how to expel and resist Dementors.
Lupin answered quickly: "Really happy memories and strong beliefs, Harry. They are often associated with wizards fighting for noble causes. In the past, wizards who could summon a physical Patronus were promoted to high positions in the Wizengamot and the Ministry of Magic."
"Okay," he clapped his hands, signaling Winston to stop writing and wake up from his thoughts: "Now you try it, cast a spell, the spell is - Expecto Patronus!"
He waved his wand and chanted, and a silvery-white, hazy animal emerged from the tip of his wand, looking like both a dog and a wolf. Like a fleeting gust of wind, it circled around them and then returned to the tip of Lupin's wand and disappeared.
"That's it. Come on, start," Lupin said simply.
Harry began to try to remember something to be happy about. "Exo-Paradise -- no, Patronus -- sorry -- Exo-Paradise, Exo-Paradise!"
A silvery mist spurted out from the tip of his wand.
"See that?" Harry said excitedly, "I did it in one go! Winster!" He excitedly shared his joy with Winster.
"I saw it. That's amazing, Harry." Winston praised, and casually summoned his own ball of white mist - it was still white mist, no matter how Winston recalled the happy scene at that time and simulated the emotions, it was still like this.
"You all did a great job." Lupin praised, but his focus was on Harry. It was obvious that Winston's talent in Defense Against the Dark Arts was not as good as Harry's.
And Winster had no way to influence the Boggart to turn into a Dementor and engage in actual combat. He could only watch as Harry kept facing the Boggart that turned into a Dementor, fell down, faced the Boggart that turned into a Dementor, fell down, faced it again, and fell down.
The Boggart, who was always beaten up by Lupin and stuffed back, also tried to bypass Harry and attack Winston, who was squatting behind them and practicing spells. But he was still beaten into a silver-white ball by Lupin and stuffed back.
When Harry wanted to continue practicing for the third time, Lupin stopped him: "Harry, that's enough, Harry, stop - that's enough for today, you can't practice anymore."
Lupin stopped Harry. Because he fainted under the influence of the Boggart-turned-Dementor and was forced to wake up, his mind was constantly tense, and the Dementors brought back memories of his parents. Harry's eyes were now full of red bloodshot and tears in the corners of his eyes. There were still some traces of hot cocoa on his face that were not wiped clean. He looked extremely embarrassed.
But he still didn't want to stop: "Let me try again, Professor Lupin, I feel like I'm about to succeed! I even heard my father's voice just now--"
Harry tried to persuade Lupin to keep trying, but it was clear that his logic was no longer clear.
"Of course, of course..." Lupin firmly held down Harry who wanted to open and close the Boggart box by himself, "I'd like to believe that you will succeed, but, Harry... this is only the first class, we still have a lot of time. Don't you see that Winston is not in a hurry?"
Lupin pointed at Winston. Harry looked over.
All he saw was Winster sitting at his desk, eating some cookies that he didn't know where they came from, with a cup of hot cocoa next to him, and reading with relish a book that seemed to be handed to him by Lupin.
"Winster?" Lupin called him.
Winster suddenly pulled his thoughts out of the book and looked at Harry: "Yeah, Harry, you don't have to be so anxious. The Gryffindor game is still a long way off, and you have to wait until the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff games are over before you know which team you're going to play against, right? There's still plenty of time, Harry."
"Okay, okay." Harry muttered, "You're right, I get it." He sighed, and his tense body gradually relaxed. He stood there and swayed a little tiredly, and Lupin handed him another cup of hot cocoa, and added the cookies that Winston was eating - it turned out that Lupin gave it to him.
Just like the cookies I ate in Lupin's office that day, they were probably made by the house-elves. Each cookie tasted roughly the same, with only a few sugar-free cookies mixed in.
"The unsweetened one is mine," Lupin said. "It must have been mixed in by accident." He held a glass of water in his hand and took a sip. "You can try it, Harry. I loved eating cookies of this flavor when I was a child - but that one has sugar."
Lupin picked a piece from the plate accurately and handed it to him.
Cranberry cookies, Harry took it and ate it.
"Any more?" asked Harry. He had devoured the biscuit in one gulp. It was delicious, but he wanted more. He was starving.
Winster was full and was leaning back in a chair contentedly, slowly drinking the hot cocoa in the cup.
He sprinkled a little vanilla extract into it, making it a fragrant vanilla hot cocoa, and enjoyed reading the theory book Lupin gave him.
After the tea party, Lupin let them go. Harry had overtrained today and had no energy to study the theory of the Patronus Charm, so he had to go back to the dormitory.
They agreed to continue next week.
"Feeling better, Harry?" asked Winston.
The two of them were walking back to their dormitories, but their dormitories were in two different directions. Harry decided to take a detour and walk with Winster.
"Better," said Harry, still sore from where he had fallen.
"Have you found Ron's rat?" asked Winster, vaguely remembering the scene where Scabbers had disappeared.
"No!" Harry answered angrily. "Ron and I saw piles of dead rats at Hagrid's place. Filch was burying them. He said the castle had been cleared of rats. Ron didn't dare run over to grab the shovel from his hand and check one by one to see if Scabbers was among the poisoned rats. He was so desperate that he thought Scabbers was dead."
Harry said with a headache, "Now I go home every day and see him sighing over the bottle of rat tonic that he bought but hasn't used on Scabbers yet. Plus the Firebolt incident..." Harry curled his lips and said, "It's hard for him to even face Hermione now."
"Hermione is worried about you too." Winster said, "Who knows what kind of curse is in this thing of unknown origin? You have also seen the curse in the Defense Against the Dark Arts class... Even Dumbledore is worried - not to mention this thing of unknown origin." Although Winster knew that it was bought for him by Harry's godfather Black.
"What if you fall down during the game? Dumbledore won't be at every game."
"I know, I know—" said Harry impatiently, "but I just got it—who would use something that expensive as a trap?"
"But you like it." Winster said, and paused: "...Remember...Ginny?"
"What's up with her?"
"Ginny was affected because she opened the letter that was not signed to anyone." Winster gave a bitter smile, "Stay alert, okay, Harry." Winster stopped at the grand staircase in the hall, looked at Harry and said, "Hermione is just worried about you."
"..." Harry sighed and said listlessly: "I know... I don't blame her, I just feel a little uncomfortable in my heart - that's a Firebolt."
Winster gave a faint smile.
……
A week into the semester, Winston and Hermione were both very busy. Harry could hardly see Winston except for Thursday nights when he would come to practice the Patronus Charm with him. Hermione seemed to have disappeared from Gryffindor and could not be seen in the common room.
Maybe only the library can see Hermione refresh.
Ron sneered at this. He said, "Isn't that just right? Harry, I don't want to see her arrogant face either. We were talking about Professor Lupin's condition before, but she arrogantly looked down on our concerns! To me, she has become very close to those Slytherins."
Ron shook his head. On the table was a bottle of rat tonic. He had just been trying to sell this useless potion to other people in the lounge.
"--I heard that she joined White's magic club. Now all her homework is done in their activity room." He said, reluctantly drawing a few lines of unidentifiable letters on the parchment.
They were completing the assignment Snape had given them about various undetectable poisons. As usual, Winster was exempted from his assignment because "he no longer needs to complete these simple tasks." Snape said, and then asked Winster to drink less vitality tonic. He also warned the whole class that there was no standard answer for them to copy this time.
——But the others couldn't escape the homework. They could only rack their brains to look up which poisons could not be tested, and pray that Snape would not suddenly put a bunch of poisons in the classroom and let them identify them one by one.
