HP: For a better world
Chapter 35 Lupine
"Cough, cough, cough, cough..." Lupin climbed up weakly from the bed. The considerate house-elf had placed hot food next to him, a medium-rare and slightly bloody steak.
The fire was burning in the fireplace, and it was already bright outside the window. The morning light was pouring in through the glass.
No thick curtains.
The elves have prepared everything for the 'sickly' Professor Lupin. He only needs to stand up and go to prepare for class. The life of a professor at Hogwarts is so plain and boring. As long as you need it, the house elves will provide you with everything.
Lupin was in a daze.
Life as a professor is so wonderful, just like returning to campus life, he doesn't have to worry about anything. For food, there are delicious foods provided every morning, noon and evening; for accommodation, the college dormitory has warm and soft beds with silk curtains to prevent lazy students from being woken up when the morning light is bright. OK, in this paradise where no one knows his true identity, he can go shopping freely in street shops. There are even friends who will accompany him when he is sick to prevent him from hurting himself or others.
But the war destroyed everything, and friends left one after another. There were fewer and fewer jobs in the magic world, and people's discrimination against werewolves turned into hatred and fear. It was not until eleven years after the war ended that the magic world seemed to finally warm up, and people returned to the order of previous years. Diagon Alley became prosperous and lively again, and several stores changed owners and were reinvested. Young wizards also made great efforts to appear. Everything was getting better. The scars of war seemed to be healed by time.
But werewolves, werewolves are worse than before.
Endless wandering, helpless hunger and hardship. For an outstanding Gryffindor graduate to fall into this situation, even someone like Lockhart lived better than any werewolf.
Ask yourself, has he ever imagined a day when no one knew he was a werewolf? ... He certainly thought about it, but he thought there was no better time than when he was in school. Although he was worried that his werewolf identity would hurt others, he still had friends.
...James, Sirius and Peter - they could get together and openly count every beautiful girl from each college walking through the hall on weekends, admiring their generous and playful expressions.
Especially the most beautiful Lily in Gryffindor, her hair is as warm as flames, her green eyes are like flowing emeralds, and her voice is more beautiful than the most melodious bird.
But they all disappeared in the war. Sirius was still alive, but he was as good as dead. Lupin still found it hard to believe that his former closest brother was actually a traitor who killed James and Evans - and also killed Peter Wormtail, who was brave for the only time.
How is this possible?
This is simply impossible!
The more they asked those experienced dark wizards whose sources of information were more secretive and well-informed, the more they were certain that the traitor was Sirius.
When asked why, they answered as a matter of course, "Come on, he's a pure blood." One of the most famous black families in the British wizarding world, they are proud of their pure blood. Not to mention that their whole family is a staunch supporter of the Dark Lord, Bella Rushen.
He was obsessed with reading the newspaper in which Sirius was arrested and laughed wildly and shouted: "I killed him! I killed him!" Even in the most impoverished time, he never threw away the newspaper.
James, Lily, and Peter's faces reappeared before him, and they said - [Why don't you go and avenge Remus for us?]
[You can ask Black why? Why did he betray me!] James growled in his mind. Lily turned her back to wipe her tears, and he heard her crying for her newborn baby.
[Harry, Harry lost his parents just after he was born, what should he do? Can Dumbledore take good care of him...]
Peter was still cowering. He cried shrilly, tears streaming down his mouse-like black eyes: [Don’t come to me, don’t come to me, please, Remus. He is so terrible... so terrible...]
But he was so immersed in the werewolf's miserable situation that he didn't even dare to ask Dumbledore for Harry's address... nor did he dare to go to Azkaban to avenge him as James might have said.
How could I take care of Harry? How?
He escaped cowardly, wandering in the pain of each month, turning into a wolf and howling at the moon.
Until the news of Blake's prison escape came out.
Dumbledore found him through the channel he had always left: "Remus. Are you going to keep avoiding him like this?" His sharp blue eyes shone straight out from behind his half-moon glasses as if they could see through his heart, he said.
At that time, Remus had just finished transforming into a werewolf and was lying weakly and painfully in a steel cage as thick as his arm, which was covered with scratches and bite marks.
And Dumbledore just appeared before him, in a narrow, dark, remote hut, appearing before him in a state of utter disgrace.
"What happened?" This was the first thing Remus said as soon as he was able to speak. He had been avoiding it for eleven years. He couldn't avoid it anymore.
"Black has escaped." Dumbledore calmly looked at him in the cage and said, "I am in need of a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Can you do it? Remus Lupin."
Remus gritted his teeth and said, "Of course." He got up from the ground and said.
"very good."
So he picked up the box and returned to Hogwarts, back to the paradise of his childhood.
As long as no one knew he was a werewolf, and no one knew he had some furry little ailments every month. He could keep working in this position... No, no, it was only a matter of time before he was discovered. Lupin looked sadly at every textbook at Hogwarts that was filled with disgust and fear of werewolves. Looking at his old enemy Snape who was always alert to every possibility of him appearing in front of Harry. Looking at the concerned and worried expressions of other colleagues who were unaware. Looking at Harry's childish and intimate smile, watching the big black dog break into the school from an unknown passage, watching the Dementors getting closer and closer, watching Dumbledore get angry, watching Harry fall from a height because of the Dementors, watching, just watching...
The mist floating on the steak dissipated, and the faint white smoke in the coffee cup next to it also dissipated.
As if waking from a dream, Lupin forked up the cut flesh and stuffed it into his mouth. The fishy-sweet taste filled his taste buds.
Normal werewolves have no habit of eating bloody food. Usually only ordinary people infected by incomplete forms and werewolves who have completely turned into beasts like this thing.
But Lupin only ate occasionally to remind himself of his identity.
He couldn't completely immerse himself in the peaceful campus life. He had to catch Sirius, Sirius and Black earlier to protect Harry.
He swallowed a mouthful of flesh and blood and took a sip of cold coffee.
There was no sugar in the coffee, and the bitter taste mixed with the beef seemed a bit strange.
"Excuse me sir! There's a knock at the door!" shrieked the house-elf who had come to clear the dishes.
Lupin pushed the chair away and stood up. "I see, go and clean it up," he said briefly. Then he walked out of the bedroom and opened the door of the office.
The first moment I saw the person coming.
Lupin wiped his mouth subconsciously. Winston was waiting for him at the door with a cup of steaming potion, and Harry was following him cautiously behind him.
They both had smiles on their faces.
"Hey, Professor Lupin, good morning!"
"Ah, good morning, Winston, and Harry, why are you here?" Lupin choked, his eyes fixed on Harry.
As if wanting to know why he was here.
"We're here to deliver the medicine." Winston inadvertently blocked Harry's view of Lupin, raised the cup with a smile, and said, "I was feeling a little unwell yesterday, so I just put the potion on your table. Please ask the elf to supervise you to drink it."
Lupin probably just woke up, and his consciousness was still hazy. There was a flash of panic in his eyes when he looked at Harry.
"Harry came here because he was worried about you, Professor. Don't forget my contribution. I delivered the medicine yesterday."
The potion in Winster's hand was steaming. Although it was taken out of the storage cabinet, it was still boiling hot.
Because the Dementors raided the school the day before yesterday, the originally stormy weather was unexpectedly affected, bringing a strong cold current to collide with the rain clouds, increasing the rain intensity and preventing the heavy rain from lasting the entire night.
The moon came out at midnight that day. Fearing that the potion was not effective enough, Winston sent the potion over in time the next day, and asked the elf to deliver the potion to the office for him and watch Lupin drink it.
Lupin himself obviously knew about this. After Winston once 'conveniently' took away his remaining wine glass, he knew that sooner or later Snape would throw this matter to his students.
I just didn't expect to see Harry together today. When Winster said this, he was telling Lupin that Harry didn't know anything and just thought he was sick.
Lupin was relieved, his eyes relaxed from Harry, and he gently stepped aside and invited the two of them in.
He asked Winston and Harry to sit down first, then called the house-elf who had just finished cleaning up to bring two cups of tea. He considerately put a few sugar cubes on a tray and brought it to Winston and Harry.
There was also a plate of snacks that were as hot as the potion.
"Thank you, Professor," Harry said slurringly, his mouth quickly filled with the still-hot pastry and his hands covered in cookie crumbs.
Harry was actually a little hungry. Earlier when he was eating in the hall, he was so angry at Malfoy who had returned to his old ways that he wanted to fight. He didn't eat properly at all, and was punished by Snape to stand because he almost caused a fight between the schools.
Fortunately, Slytherin was also punished.
Harry took another cookie and put it in his mouth.
Winster and Lupin both looked at him.
"..." Winster put the steaming potion on the table, looked at Harry who was indulging in the snacks, then looked at the snacks that looked sweet and delicious at first glance, and finally moved his gaze to the weak-looking Lupin.
"You should know that there are some things you can't eat, Professor Lupin?" Winster frowned.
The original wolfsbane potion really cannot have any sugar added, but Snape spent so many days brewing it, and especially out of personal vengeance he added all kinds of ingredients into the crucible in an effort to create a strange taste that would not affect the efficacy of the potion.
This allowed him to more quickly experience many of the speculations about the medicinal properties of the wolfsbane potion, and he made slight improvements to the original potion so that it would no longer become completely ineffective if just a little sugar was added.
But this improvement is so slight that it can be almost ignored.
Snape was too proud to show off this tiny bit of progress. He just told Lupin not to eat sweets, not even a little bit.
Lupin explained helplessly: "The cookies are specially taken out to treat you. They are the cooking magic of the elves."
Winster then lowered his brows, and couldn't help but ask Lupin about the effects and feelings after taking the medicine, and recorded them one by one.
Lupin touched his nose and smiled bitterly. Except for his pale face, he looked like an ordinary person. In addition, his mild personality made him look like a werewolf.
Harry couldn't get a word in. He only saw Winster's eyes glowing with excitement, as he wrote and drew in a familiar notebook.
He kept asking until Harry had eaten most of the biscuits, reluctantly leaving some for Winston, and he still kept asking about the taste of the potion that Snape had improved, trying to judge which generation of wolfsbane potion Lupin drank by looking at which cauldron Snape had brewed the potion.
